  1. Hi walbassist - nice to meet someone local! jwbassman - used to live about ten mins from KGV college, (mis)spent my youth in Palm Court/Manhattens/Floral Hall. Where you based? Good luck with house move! thanks for the tip derrenleepoole, I'll have a listen
  2. Thanks velvetkevorkian. This does make sense, but I do have grief playing other people's basses... I think maybe if I raised the action on my bass a little bit it would help me build up my stamina and strength a bit more.
  3. thanks guys! jwbassman - I grew up in Southport! Small world! A db can be wedged into a corner - sell your sofa, they're worth it!! I'm trying to practice singing and bass, but only can do it on ballads at the moment.
  4. Hey everyone, I'm Sarah, live near Winchester and I've been playing jazz double bass kind of on and off for about 3 years. I was a jazz vocalist but decided I needed to learn something about music and actually play an instrument. I'm terrible at practising, though I know what I need to work on I can never summon up enough enthusiasm to get working on it. I joined this forum to give me a bit of a kick up the proverbial to get me motivated to practice. I can work through a chart pretty much ok, but I struggle with speed and walking basslines. I'm good at ballads and 2 in a bar!! Need to get away from being stuck in half and first position too!!!
  5. This might be a stupid question, but here goes! I've been playing jazz double bass for a few years, but not very seriously (hard to play whilst looking after a toddler!). I have never had my bass properly setup. I don't have transport and so have recently borrowed a couple of other people's basses when needed. I've found that their strings are much higher off the fretboard (is that called high action?) and I've been finding it hard work to play them. I wondered whether it's just I need to work on my stamina, or perhaps their setup doesn't suit me or perhaps is my bass setup incorrect.....? Any advice would be great. I have had a bass teacher and I borrowed his bass and that seemed to be ok, but I didn't play for long as we mostly talked through exercises etc.
