1. Have a look at Stewart Macdonald in the States www.stewmac.com There's a slotted Tusq nut to replace the plastic one you have (item code 4753 but have a look around at other material) and a P Bass wiring kit with new pots (item code - 0139). Been getting supplies from Stewmac for years now and always great service.
2. I used to have a '51 RI. Great bass! I put a Seymour Duncan SCPB-1 into it and shielded it with the copper tape. As well as taping the cavities, tape the underneath of the scratchplate (making sure it touches the tape on the cavities) and the run of cable which goes from the pickup to the controls. Might be little OTT, but I never had a buzzing problem after that.
3.
I'd say play as many instruments as you can.
The only way you know what you want is from experience. The only way you get experience is to play! Also, buy with your ears and not with your eyes. If it sounds good it is good
4. I think low F would be a low F# a fourth below the low B found on some/most 5 and 6 string basses. There are guys who go down to C# a fourth below the F#. My ACG has a 35" scale (different scale lengths can specified!). I have to agree with others on here in that the scale length is not the be-all-and-end-all. Every bass has to be weighed up on it's own and not chucked to the side because the scale length is "wrong".
5. I used to have one as well. It sounded good, really portable. Liked it a lot. Decided to put characters from Asterix over each of the fingerboard dots and used the side of a thick "Kaolin and morphine" medicine bottle as a ramp (it was over 15 years ago though ).
6. I've played some Metro's and, in isolation I was really impressed with them. Felt great, sounded great, looked great. I prefer my Tyler though.
7. Looks good. Hope the rest of the sanding goes smoothly.....
8. Yup, a very relaxed meeting. I've got to admit to being nervous coming to this meeting as I hadn't had the chance to practice much the week before! I needn't have worried though as there was never any kind of competition either in chops or gear. My wife came along with me in case I got to tired to drive home and she had a great time listening to basses being played and getting stuck into a good book (the 1st of a 14 book series).
9.
Big thanks to Alan for hosting us and organising an excellent venue for us.
+1 The turnout could have been higher but a great afternoon nonetheless. Really enjoyed meeting you all, talking all things bass and playing with/thru some great stuff! There was a real mix of instruments and amps which you definitely wouldn't find down the local music store. Here's to the next one.
10. I haven't heard of this builder before (maybe I should get out more) but the basses look wonderful.
11. I've got the piezo bridge on my ACG and was really surprised at just how good it is. When it's used with a single magnetic pickup it leaves the other input free to take the piezo signal. Being able to shape the piezo signal gives another bucketload of tonal options.
12. I'm looking forward to this as well. Looks like it'll be a good bash.
13. Great player, great guy... ....and the reunited Mr. Big is gonna kick some behind
14.
That's a handsome looking bass!
+1

18. Great mix of basses. All classic and all subtly different.
19. Very cool collection. Like the Uke's as well...
20. What a well-rounded collection. You must be one happy bass player!!
21. ....and now Mr.Big is back together we get to see that song performed live again!! It's been confirmed that there will be a live CD and DVD of the Japanese tour in June. Might even be some US dates as well. Will they get to the UK?? I hope so.
22.
I wonder what all those knobs do? EDIT: I've worked it out. Some of them run the country.
