My ACG 9 was going to have the Graphtec preamp and MIDI out. After I installed Cubase 4, I found out that I had loads of sounds in there and so I didn't need the extra wiring or the Axon. The 2 Graphtec preamps (piezo and MIDI) piggy back each other, so it's a really clever way to get both signals without doubling the wiring. It's going to be awful crowded in that control cavity, but it's gonna work great.

Oooo. A proper Warwick. Those older Streamers really are something special.

More a pun on the size. It was also my Grandma's name and she loved music and musical instruments

Yup, that right. You have the "oilslick" Sei The "oilslick" is related to other Sei basses like "Jezebel" and "Rampant Rabbit"

The ACG 9 has been christened "Minnie"

Great to see another Sei on here. Good catch Did you get your Sei used? If you did I think I know who placed the order for it in the first place and what your bass's nickname is....

That sounds like a great idea. What happens if the account doesn't balance? Does it mean you have to do the washing up a day for each penny that you owe....
FWIW, any time I see the word 'best' (not just here - anywhere), I take it as read that someone's expressing an opinion. Even if they don't know they are.
That's what I was try (and failing) to say
I love the idea because I'm forever split between p's and jazzes so I would be getting the best of both world.
I had a USA Urge Mk1 and it was an amazing instrument. Any choice of pickup, passive, active or active w/mid boost gave the best of 3 worlds. It now lives with a guitarist who loved the 32" scale.
There's no doubt that Sei are the best 'all wood' basses made in the UK right now, but I'd need to play some basses from Ritter, Le Fay and Drozd before I could safely make that claim for the whole of Europe myself...
Good point and maybe a rash statement which I concede. I have played a Drozd though and in my opinion it didn't feel, play or sound as good as my Sei.
There is no such thing as "The Best".
"The Best" is always a personal opinion and it's shame that if a post isn't prefaced with IMO, IMHO etc then it's jumped on. In my opinion, "the best" car is a Mk1 Toyota MR2.

Could do. I only have the "Anarchy in the Ukulele" DVD to go by, so I may be a bit behind the times.

Yup, write an e-mail NOW and arrange a day to go down and finalise the spec. I do know what you mean about lashing out £2k+ though. I have a Sei 7 and it's an unbelievable bass to play. I might change the Schack preamp out, but the quality of the instrument really is something else. Every time I pick up the bass to play, it just makes me smile. I'm extremely lucky to be a Sei owner and to have a wife who understands why these things cost so much.... Sei basses are the best basses in Europe and among the best in the world. Amazing how they produce such quality from the small space downstairs in The Gallery.
The only Fender bass I've owned is the USA Urge which was a fantastic bass. I've never owned a Precision or a Jazz, preferring the feel and sound of other brands instead.
Have to correct myself. I had a Fender '51 re-issue which was brilliant, but I still wouldn't buy the more modern versions.

ACG Filter based pre-amps - the difference!
7string replied to GreeneKing's topic in Accessories and Misc
I've had a number of Seis - for me the construction, playability and aesthetic is outstanding but I've sometimes found the tone a bit polite/lacking in character. I can imagine that the ACG/East pre will make a massive, positive difference.
That's what I'm going for. I've been so busy playing my ACG 9 that I haven't played around with the preamp yet!! D-Basser - Came over to my place last week, played the 9 and started experimenting with preamp. It was really interesting to just sit and hear the sounds the bass could produce from really heavy dub to really cutting trebley bite. The ACG pre is way ahead of the Schack pre I have in the Sei, although the Demeter 3 band in my Tyler produces great focussed sounds but without the flexibility of the ACG. As my Sei only has the one pickup, I'm not losing out on having the ACG EQ02 instead of the ACG EQ01. -
I did use a guitar string for the F string on my 7. Unfortunately, I've forgotten what brand it was. Definitely wasn't something unusual, probably a Dean Markley or D'Addario. I'm OK for strings at the moment, but I'll have a look next time around.
Yeah, I used to use Overwater 6 string sets, but find that they dont last too long. Ideally, i'd probably use Elixirs, I love my Elixir string on the 6, they're phenomenal! I've emailed them to see if they can wind me something to use as an F string. If not, I reckon trying something like the S.I.T strings would be worthwile! Is it noticeable having the core in contact with the bridge? You're not planning on ordering any more are you? Could go halves on the shipping and get some each? If not, I've just had a reply from Bill Conklin, and might order a set of his Snakeskin ones to try. I definitely do like Elixirs though... hmm The coating is coming off a little bit where I play over the PUs, but they still have an almost piano like clarity, really bright, great sounds and feel!!!
Only tried Elixirs once (as I won them on a Basschat competition!) as they are so expensive compared to regular strings. I've not noticed any difference between taper-core and regular strings, although I should think that taper-core makes setting intonation both easier and more accurate. S.I.T. strings are available on the net (eBay's worth a look) but I have a set at the moment. The Snakeskin's do have a good reputation though. Can I also point you towards the forum on www.extendedrangebassist.com where you'll find more information about suitable strings for ERB's.

(IMO, of course!) Fenders are over-rated, over-priced and it's a bit hit and miss whether you get a good one or not. I can understand that players go with Fender because of the history, but there are other brands giving them a good run for their money. In days gone by Fender was the only choice, nowadays it's not so clear cut. The only Fender bass I've owned is the USA Urge which was a fantastic bass. I've never owned a Precision or a Jazz, preferring the feel and sound of other brands instead.

Many congrats. There's a saying in Scotland "what's for ya will nay go by ya". Very fitting for your new bass.
I think the relationship between you and the luthier is almost more important than the instrument - you've got to believe that you're going to get something really special and that requires you to have confidence in the man.
I totally agree with this. Apart from the fact that you want your money to be well spent, you do put a lot of trust in the luthier to produce what you've discussed. After all, you're the one who is going to have to live with the finished instrument. Also, the both the bass and your experience with the luthier will act as either good or bad advertising.

There is even a Japanese TV performance and a live in a studio thing where there is no bass player at all. Things were bad when the "Shine" video was made. However, I do know that they have been in contact for quite a while. E-mails went back and forth at first and now they've put everything behind them.

Good question, but the 7 string thing runs to my e-mail address as well. Collecting the Sei 7 was a day when one of my life's ambitions was fulfilled.

Enough already. It's no good. I also have a rotten headache, feel like crap (more than usual) and so the end of my tether has been reached. We all have to realise that jazz is the highest form of all the arts. Only those who both listen to it and understand it are worthy and deserve our respect and admiration. Those who don't understand jazz should start be encouraged to start their slow walk towards the light. This journey will show you the error of your musical ways and you will emerge as a better player, a better musician and (sniff) a better person. Also, always remember that it will be impossible to say "you hate jazz". Your opinions will not be respected and those of the jazz persuasion will still try and change your mind.

Any day is good for me. I can move stuff around if I need to.

The bass player with the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain plays an acoustic bass guitar. Maybe he should get a bass uke for more authenticity.

I have used the OW strings as well, but I don't like them that much. Luckily, I've found that OW can just supply the F string which is a 20 or 21 or so. So I have a mix of D'Addario and OW on my basses. Here's the page from S.I.T which shows the strings that they do, right up to a 0.195. http://www.sitstrings.com/show_product.php?id=29 You can also get the bigger strings individually from http://www.octave4plus.com/ They go from a 0.005 to a 0.200

After looking around for something special to go with the 9, I came across this site: http://www.dslstraps.com.au/ They do have a distributor in the UK, who can get you whatever's on the site. My wife's told me that she organised for me to have the 3 1/2" saddle brown leather with lime green suede backing, for Valentine's Day (although it might be a little late as it's one of the only colours not in the UK at the moment).
