1. £490 is a great price considering it comes with that case
2. Has that Explorer bass still not shifted?
3. Also looks refinished IMHO - they were well built basses but with poor hardware. The pickups are a little thin (but if you find EB humbuckers too fat, you might prefer these) and the original bridge was pretty poor too. The SB30 is the shortscale (30") version of the SB400. An yes optimistically priced in that condition.
4. I don't know the serial number of your bass - but if it is an 800000 it will most likely be a '73. The slotted headstock models changed to the solid headstocks around serial number 728xxx, and they were getting '73 dated pots by 778xxx. I know there is supposedly a lot of randomness in Gibson serial numbers, but there is actually quite a lot of order amongst the randomness too. Very nice bass - here's mine - allegedly once owned by Jack Bruce - but I have no proof of this! 5. Interesting... does the Shaftesbury varitone do the same thing as the Gibson (ie not just a pickup selector)
6. minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHE6hZU72A4
7. They had Lonnie Liston Smith on zingzillas too.. couldn't believe it!
8. I don't slap, but if I were to, I'd try one of the long scale, bolt-on neck, maple bodied Gibsons... probably a G3 or Victory - they are NOTHING like the EB/tbird/LP basses that most people associate with Gibson... ie no mahogany, no short scale, no overwound humbuckers - the Victory Artist is active too (with a passive mode) and I suspect would give you exactly what you want. But to be fair these are the least Gibsony Gibsons....
9. The EB2 doesn't feedback that easily - you have top stand right near your amp, and often fret a certain position to get it going. A couple other (non-centre-block) basses I have feedback much more readily - i'm thinking my Hagstrom Concord, Fender Coronado, and Hofner President - again fretting certain positions help. As well as the obvious centre block issue, perhaps the slightly noisier single coils just help get it started?
10. Ok thanks, and no worries. As far as I know, no shipping data has ben released My impression from watching online sales (and I do keep a record of serial numbers, so I know it's not the same ones) is that there are several dozen. Whereabouts are you?
11. Just out of interest, why do you feel there are only 12 of these in ebony?
12. Yeah, Hofners vibrate beautifully and are pretty loud. I play an old Hofner President unplugged at home, and still get he occasional complaint late at night Everyone should own one!
13. I caught Maceo's show a couple years back - with Skeet on bass. Great performance all round! definitely worth seeing if you get the chance
14. Hi, nice bass! you talk about the neck slimming - but I see no detailed pics of this. Can you be specific as to what has been done? Have I misunderstood Presumably this was before the refin? The only shot of the neck seems to have finish on it. Also I take it the mute and hand rest are lost? Thas
15. I know not completely headless, but any interest in a Gibson 20/20 (Steinberger)? thanks

17. yeah, I have. I never play it mind you... Way to 80s
18. Yeah, they are pretty rare, and expensive in original condition - but ultimately they are a collectors bass, so modded ones are reasonable. There was a body with no parts but an extra pickup route on ebay not so long ago that was reasonably priced. But Gibson just reissued and promptly deleted a similar version in Pelham blue. Can't see one online just now, but a mate got one for £500 a couple months back http://www.gearnuts.com/store/detail/BAEB11PBCH. Yes they have that fat early sixties neck, but no not too heavy - pretty small bodies really.
19.
It's a good question. Same cold apply to Gibson and other makes. There seems to be a sacred regard to Fender
I don't really agree here about Gibson - I think there is definite vintage appeal with Gibson basses. It just hasn't resulted in the ridiculous price levels of Fender. Old Fender basses have become vastly over-valued for what they are: not really that old bits of wood, metal and plastic. They don't play so very differently from new Fenders IMHO. I feel there is a lot of mystique about old Fenders that perhaps doesn't bear close examination. Maybe i'm wrong, and haven't tried the right one! Old Gibson's on the other hand (in many cases anyway) are nothing like new ones. A 60s EB bass is simply a completely different bass to a new SG reissue. Same shape, and that's about it.... Same with the Les Paul basses, Ripper, G3 or RD - all Norlin period so I don't think it's about periods of perceived poor quality either.
20. 4005s go for stupid money - but you can't get a new one of those
21.
I reckon DJ is faking it on that Guild bass: check his left thumb.
that's exactly how I play....
22.
Juju - that's pretty good. There's been a G-3 parted out on ebay this past week, but the pickguard was about £100 and the bridge was around £85 - that's before shipping and customs.
you've got to get up pretty early in the morning to get to the Gibson bass parts bargains before I do... or stay up all night.
Didn't know Vintage Guitar & Bass was yours! Great job! It's an an excellent site...........with a fair few plugs for Slade!
why thanks... Yep Jim Lea certainly knew how to play a bass!
