1. The squier 'vintage modified' short scale jaguar bass is a very good bass for the money. I have gigged my candyapple red one a lot. A secondhand one it should hold its value if she doesn't get on with it. The sunburst version is available as a pack with a decent practice amp & strap, tuner, cable, gigbag etc
2. I prefer gigbags most of the time but I do have a peardrop guitar hardcase from brandoni music which is a nice solid case with tolex covering. its currently in the loft with a casio midi guitar inside. There's a similr bass version and they're pretty cheap at £45 http://www.brandoniguitars.co.uk/cases.asp
3. I really like the LaBella 'danelectro' stainless steel flats I have on my longhorn - as they are specifically for danos, they're exactly the right length and the smaller ball-ends work perfectly with the bridge. They're also long-lasting - I've had the same set for over 10 years, so they were a lot cheaper than the current cost when I bought them. 4. Any bass you're comfortable with. In my americana band on various gigs with several root-fifth type songs, I used my precisions (fretted & fretless), an active jazz, a mustang, a musicmaster, a danelectro longhorn, an ashbory, a dean pace electric upright, an NS-Design CR-5M electric upright, a white epiphone thunderbird, and a natural epiphone thunderbird pro-v. I'm not aware of anyone ever being offended by my choice of bass. Not that it would have bothered me.
5. My favourite bass is a vintage white CIJ mustang to which I have an aged pearl pickguard & a tug-bar (treble side). I also have a Daphne blue '72 musicmaster which looks fantastic but not in the same league as the mustang. A '66 daphne blue mustang with 'lollypop' tuners in good condition would pretty much be my ideal bass. If they made an undamaged or aged but not abused 'closet classic' version of the JMJ I'd be all over it, but the relic job looks awful.
6. I got a fantastic unlined precision neck with ebony board from brandoni guitars when I built my fretless precision several years ago. I think it was about £100 then, so replacing the neck could be a much cheaper and easily reversible option to modifying the existing neck. In your position however I would keep the lines & get used to them.
7. have you checked that the battery isn't on its way out? How about the strings? Are the pickups too high or too low?

9.
The bridge on my old Ibanez was either a Schaller or a copy and it bent upwards, so I was put off the design (fairly or unfairly).
I bought a Schaller 3D in the mid-80s for my precision and the baseplate of that bent upwards, so it is sitting in my bits box now. I thought this was a weird thing to occur, and assumed it was a one-off but hearing about yours I wonder whether it is a more common occurance.
10. I still have the '81 'international' cherry sunburst precision I bought new from Rockbottom for £260 when I was 18. The weight of it is ridiculous as its made from the same kind of ash used for baseball-bats.

12. Steamed Oak? for some reason this came to mind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDUIGvpDolw
13. Not a bass, but I wish I had the money for this Gibson.
14. I suspect this listing might be a lost chapter from Dylan's Tarantula http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Im-Baby-Grand-Piano-Animo-Et-Corpore-That-By-After-Englands-Civil-War-1642-5-/292151449345
15. I'll try to explain: The curve of the pickguard doesn't look like it follows the curve of the lower (treble side) horn as evenly as a Fender - I can see a bit of a gap there where more of the body finish is visible. It looks like that part of the pickguard should extend a little lower.
16. I've previously seen the weird gap between the lower edge of the treble horn and the pickguard on SX basses. The manufacturer of SX basses has sold the same basses to various distributors under various names and the same basses have been branded as 'Jim Deacon' in the UK. The headstock shape also seems like it might be similar to the shape used by some older Jim Deacon models
17. Looks nice but its not a squier, mighty mite or licensed by Fender neck as the headstock is not the correct shape. The blob on the end of a Fender/Squier/licensed headstock would be bigger and the lower edge would be more curved. It looks more like one of the generic Chinese necks that come up on ebay
18. Stock answers used by bands I was in when punter make requests: Do we look like a f'ing jukebox All requests must be written on a £50 note We don't do that one, but we will play one later which contains some of the same notes
19. I like 'em. What type of Epiphone thunderbird was it? I've owned two - the first was the original epi old-style bolt-on version but a limited edition 'alpine white' version and the one I still have is the pro-v 5 string version in the raw oiled finish. I'm looking forward to seeing the new version which appears to be a much closer recreation of the orginal 1964 gibson.
20. My understanding is that the stock tuners on my 2004 CIJ mustang were made by Gotoh so swapping them out for generic chinese units would probably not be an upgrade. I have no problem with my tuners except that I prefer the look of lollipop-style ones as fitted to original '60s Mustangs. The posts are smaller than most similar looking tuners so they probably won't fit without enlarging the hole with a reamer. If tuners are loose they could just need tightening and odd vibrations can possibly be caused by how the strings are wound onto the posts. Can you post pics of the front & back of the headstock?
21. Knotty pine neck, tuners fitted backwards - Perhaps this was made as a teaching aid to show what happens if you start making something without a plan. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Unique-Acoustic-Guitar/152556012463
22. If it was one of my kids (aged 21 & 19) who thought it was a good idea to so this, I'd tell them that if you can't manage to save up £139 over a two or three months to buy the thing outright, then buying £250 worth of kit it on the never never is not a good idea. As you're not one of my kids, I'd suggest buying a zoom H2 for recording rehearsals & gigs and a spare heavy duty guitar cable to make up the difference.
23. Its not the funk machine which was a '62 with the work 'funk' carved into the neck heel & filled with ink. Before that he had a black '57 and after that a mid 60s one with a later version of the Fender logo which he used in LA. All were stolen from him and not recovered. Never saw any mention of him owning & playing any other basses in that period, and never heard any mention of him ever owning another 61/62.
24. The Duke & the King were a great band who split up after two albums (released 2009 & 2010)
