  1. John called it a 'Speckwick'. It used to be on his old website, from when he built custom instruments
  2. try both and see how you get on. I mainly use unlined but I bought a US '62 reissue P bass in 1990 and defretted it and filled the gaps with filler. I didn't notice it was any better or worse than unlined.
  3. Bassdoc's ALIVE>>>>>>>>>>>>
  4. yep, my wife is also a great rock bass player
  5. Scarabs are cool, I'd forgotten how good they looked. Mine sold from a shop in Folkestone. i think I swapped it for a 70s P bass that was fabulous
  6. I used to have a white Scarab bass. I think it was very nice but it was 30 years ago. I'd love to try it now and see what I think
  7. I've been a P bass player since about 1988. I always go back to my old '73, despite owning loads of other basses BUT, since the arrival of my Flea Jazz bass, I haven't gigged a P bass. It's got custom shop 64 pickups IIRC as standard and they are cracking
  8. this is how my Police tribute works. We have learned a lot of songs, all the singles and a load of album tracks. Normally we play all the singles and some album tracks but depending on how long we're on stage, it could be most of the singles and my favourite Police song, 'Driven to tears'. My pub band doesn't even talk to each other between gigs!! (seriously. I've stopped trying to organise them and no one else has stepped up)
  9. As Lee Pomeroy said somewhere, if you're a good bloke, play ok and get on with everyone, you get the call.
  10. Any excuse to pop a picture of this 1981 SBR-150
  11. bugger, I can see it now. oh well, I'll come and say hello on the sunday
  12. it didnt give me the option as far as I could see. I even looked to get 2 more and it still didnt show
  13. i couldnt put my discount code in the website and have been charged. disappointed!!
  14. I didn't know Jon Case made basses. I used to do some gold plating for him. Lovely looking bass
  15. Haven't seen Martin's W/A yet but I supported Andy Powell's W/A in 2016. They were great.
  16. Damn I'm playing that day and I'm local too
  17. It sounds to me that you stuck the strip on the front of the baffle. I think you should stick it on the edge facing in, that way the leds would face each other and not outwards. I think this would be the desired effect. I have these in my kitchen as my under cupboard lighting. It can be like a flipping disco in there.
  18. minitaur, lovely. That should melt some internal organs
  19. wow, that is so cool
  20. harsh....(funny though) I like dead rounds, different to flats but (the way I play) likely to snap and I still use Roto swing bass.
  21. no it's not that one. it was a lighter shade. I think someone tried to sell me that one though but I thought it was too scruffy.
  22. Any got this bass. It was a custom order in 1991. A chap ordered it when I worked in Music Mart in Canterbury. Total custom colour, probably a one off. I think it was a 4000 series but can't be sure
  23. I've picked up some real 'collection only' bargains. I have driven all over the country (I live in south east kent). Driven to Mablethorpe, Wigan, Newcastle upon tyne, Newquay. I've met up with people in service stations, Fleet M3, Potters bar (what ever its called), Clacket Lane, Maidstone. Wigan probably the best deal. 1989 PRS custom 24 signature series. £1500. Should have been much more than that. i'm always prepared to meet people, if I want to sell or buy, I do my best to get to their house to buy and am as flexible as possible when selling., I've couriered guitars all over the world and even a Fender twin reverb to Italy.
  24. that's a great demo with the 77 sounding sounding great BUT, it's the only maple board in the test, so it's not comparing anything like the others. They were all rosewood with alder of basswood. It would have been great to hear a maple board alder body too, as I personally prefer the thump of an alder body. I have numerous P type basses and the ash body one is the weakest IMO but I used to have a Sting Jap Fender with an ash body and it really purred. My '73 is alder and rosewood and sounds amazing, My alder with fretless maple board bitsa (custom shop fender 62 pickup) also sounds marvellous. some nice playing on that demo too
