Sid Vicious - undervalued bass innovator?
elephantgrey replied to upside downer's topic in General Discussion
I wouldnt mind standing about on stage whilst another bassist plays for me backstage, but then im a lazy sod. -
To start with i would suggest a zoom multi effects, it will help you find out what different effects do to your sound. Or a bitcrusher. Bitcrushers are fun.

I have a tc polytune (the original one), and it tracks the B on my 6er no problem. I do have it after a compressor, but it tracks well without one too. I also got bored one day, and managed to tune the tone knob on my OD pedal, and both of my bitcrushers to E (individually in my feedback loop so they self occilated). It coped with that fine.

Gigging and the costs - what would you do in this situation?
elephantgrey replied to Naetharu's topic in General Discussion
Are you charging on the door, and if so, does your band get the money for putting up the capital to put on the gig? -
Just listened to those soundclips, and the FI definitely sounds more useful to me now than on the YT video. just one q, can it work as a pitch to midi converter? i mean, if i plug a bass in, and then send midi out from the FI to a [s]gameboy[/s]synth, could i trigger notes on the [s]gameboy[/s]synth by playing them on bass, or does the FI just accept midi note data in?

What gas GAS REALLY means, is an ever emptying bank account, and house full of (cool) stuff you dont need.

Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!
elephantgrey replied to dudewheresmybass's topic in Effects
ẁow, if your unhappy with that cabling, you really shouldnt see my board, and its about to get worse with 3 chase bliss pedals and a midibox incoming… -
Octave pedal with (very) active basses - recommendations?
elephantgrey replied to cetera's topic in Effects
As someone who has never owned an octave pedal, isnt the OC2 fames for having a synthy sound? I thought that the clean octaves where the like of the markbass and the POG. -
An ordinary compressor will do the trick, there also are multiband compressors & limiter pedals, but i think thats a bit overkill for what you want. id check out Ovnilab for general compressor advice, especially his top picks page. The most important things to look for is metering (led/s showing how much compression is happening); threshold, ratio, and makeup gain controls, and maybe attack, and release controls.

Poll, how many many basses have you got?
elephantgrey replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
I only have 2… within arms reach, The other 8 are elsewhere. -
But without pedals, how do you guys bitcrush things?

Be careful with buying from outside the EU, youre likely to get charged VAT+duty on them. This usually comes to about 1/4 of the items value (often after P&P).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhALvoTB168 Oh man, ive got so much GAS for the Chase Bliss pedals. I cant really afford to buy anything right now, but im so tempted.

If your new to effects, i would suggest a multiFX (id lean towards the zoom b3/ms60b/b1on), they come with a load of effects, so you can see what fits together for you. They are also one of the only ways to get a cab sim. Also i would suggest looking at 'utility' type pedals, those pedals that dont change your sound themselves, but change the way other pedals work, examples are loop pedals (options here include blend, feedback, crossover) expression pedals, LSO/envilope/step pedals. Oh and looper pedals (the other type) are fun, they are much like a delay, but instead of playing back what you play but behind you a second or two, they play back a bar or two forever (until you stop it). If nothing else, they are great creative/practice tools.

Some effects types you havnt listed off the top of my head:- reverb, synth, bitcrusher, (envelope)filter, noisegate. I got a mate of mine to turn a shelving into a board (got him to get it to fit a flight case i had laying about). There are threads abotu making boards out of ikea shelves if you search (gorm shelveas i think). As for power, i would suggest This supply if you can power all your effects off it, or the gigrig system for anything more elaborate/power thirsty.
This is interesting. Can you add a high-pass, so that only the higher frequencies get "revrebed"?
you could try a crossover pedal like the sfx.

I would class hall as usually quite a long tailed verb. Im a big fan of plate verbs in general, but think that bass sounds best with a short room verb in a crossover loop. That or a nice long hall or spring verb for ambient sounds. There are also pedals that do 'infinite' verb, which means that you can play a note, and have the verb be sustained theoretically forever.

Im currently GASing for a chase bliss warped vinyl.

I would like to be able to control all of my pedals via CV, but unfortunately some (like my IE Frantabit) only take expression pedals, not CV. Ive looked at the expressionator, but can only really find anything saying it can go the other way, (expression into CV). does anyone have any suggestions?
My sisters had elocution lessons in early teens, to 'lose' their Hounslow (pronounced 'Arnsleh'...) accent; it worked a treat. For your pronunciation, a few sessions, a couple of suitable exercises and you'll be fixed, no bother. Actors train to pick up accents and quirks of speech; is there an elocution or stage school near you..? It depends on how much it bugs you, I suppose, but it sounds easy enough to sort out, if seen by a professional. They do this kind of thing all the time. Just sayin'.
I think this is actually something that I'm going look up. I'm Belfast based so I'm sure that there will be options about.
Interesting. Does this happen in speech or just singing? Also can you go the other way and soften your r further and tie the last letter of the previous word onto it? Example: Instead of "Losing my religion" sing "losing my_yeligion." Might not help, but nothing ventured
Yeah it happens when I speak as well. When I hear myself speak in my head I sound like I say R, but its clearly just a voiced W from recordings. That's a good idea, I'll have to have a play and see how it sounds.

+1 for the zoom units. II use a ms60b with a bddi algorithm. I prefer it to the real thing due to the MIDs control. Plus then I use an amp sim, used to use a cab sim as well, but then got a fender micro DI which has one on.
