1.
shoxking title for a thread. I'm sure lots of people rehearse many things in bed, for me, bass isn't the first thing I thought of!
That's what to call it when the Good Lady catches you with your old chap in your hand!
2. I think that if you grow a permed mullet and an excessive moustache and move to Germany, then you are allowed to play a keytar provided you wear stonewashed denim and hi-top trainers.
3. I know what you mean about feeling that it was a bit off. From the other side, I recently bought something on here, decided that I didn't like it and flipped it, but flipped it elsewhere. Whether or not I made a profit on it was of secondary importance to the fact that I didn't want the other person to know that I didn't like his/her ex-pride and joy.
4. I did something similar with my old amp, but am too scared to unscrew the grills from my nice new cabs to repeat the process. It looks cheesy as hell, but always got a good response at gigs.
5. I like my action as low as I can with no more than minimal fret buzz.
6. This has always been one of my favourite bass lines to play.
7. Based between Cambridgeshire and Bury St. Edmunds, a loud and energetic rock covers bands is seeking a solid, confident bass player. The band is consistently gigging 2 to 3 times per month so someone who could pick up the set list quickly would be an advantage. For more info and to arrange an audition, contact Gary on 07859-893875.
8. Not many will think this superior to the original, but it does it for me: SkaDaddyz version of Hotel California: quite stunning musicianship https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DEzTW5VhQI
9. Beth Patterson's Wasted Years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvZp4SdVsOg I've loved this version for years and it has the advantage of pre-dating Ryan Adam's turgid version.
10. Intriguing. My physics is far too shaky to figure this out, but it sounds plausible.
11. When are we not being completely pedantic?
12.
David Bowie, there's another one.
I confess to liking most Bowie's stuff and while there are some albums I like less than others, at least he hasn't spent the last 30 years playing the same few hits at his concerts.
13.
Perhaps. I think some of his finest work came in his solo years. A lot of it self indulgent and introspective but he didn't care he had money in the bank and plenty of time (or so he thought). Poor fella. A definite waste.
You are entirely right. A lot of artists branch out (descend?) into self-indulgence when they have reached the top. It is a very fine and subjective line between genius and pretentiousness. Many artists in all creative milieus (milieux?) who have died before their time may have seen their reputations saved by not descending into artistic self-parody. Would Freddie Mercury be as revered as he is if he were still with us? As a life-long Queen fan I wonder if 70 year old Freddie would an object of artistic derision. Who knows.
14. I had a Yamaha RBX (I think) bass when I was in my late teens / early twenties that was much better to play than its price tag suggested. I kept it for years and years until I moved to 5 strings. Maybe it was just right for me or maybe I got lucky and it was a particularly well-made instrument (after all, like cars, two basses of the same model are not going to be identical.) I moved up to a Hohner 5 string which wasn't quite as good as the RBX and a good 10 years later I moved to a Yamaha TRB which was the first bass I'd owned which I could confidently say was better than the RBX, especially its electrics, but then it cost over 5x as much.
15. Some excellent tunes in there, chaps. This one came back to me, too. "And did those feet In ancient times.."
16. Why does the drummer have a microphone in his ear?
17. What first line or sentence of a song does it for you? For me it is Levi Stubbs' Tears: With the money from her accident She bought herself a mobile home. Like a good novel, for me a good lyric is one that takes you into a story. I never really liked relentlessly introspective or solipsistic songs, much preferring narrative ones; but each to their own.
18. John Lennon. His filter wore increasingly thin as time passed. Either that or Yoko Ono was wearing it down.
19. I sold my Vanderkley and missed it so much I had to buy another. To my ears, the sound is fantastic and I like the minimalist amp face. Few knobs and switches mean few things for me to mess up. I now have two 410 Vanderkley cabs and the live sound is pristine and can be easily adapted to a vast range of gigging conditions. Of course this is entirely subjective but they are most definitely not rubbish. My first ever bass amp (made by Tandy) was rubbish, though. Are Vanderkleys worth the money? That would be a better question, but is also very subjective.
20. I love my wireless. I have the Shure GLX16D beta. It isn't cheap but it has a rechargeable lithium ion battery with 16 playing hours of charge time and I can recharge/top it up it in the car on my way to gigs. I have never had even a whisper of interference while gigging with it and cannot hear any difference in my sound.
21. Another car analogy: I think of Fender as being the Ford Fiesta of the bass world. Solid, reliable and the benchmark for good quality. There are also a huge number of cars from around the world of which some are cheaper and better and some aren't. Personally, I have never much liked Fenders. Or Ford Fiestas, either.
22. The fact that the bass is filthy and the picture was taken outside makes me wonder what the inside of the house is like....
23. I rarely listen to music much these days. As a teen and young adult, I listened all the time. These days it is much more likely to be Radio 4 or audiobooks. I suppose that my interests have broadened and I listen to music for practising and gigging so I want to listen to other things at other times.
24. Another thought, if the front of house sound is fine and you still can't hear yourself, invest in some decent earplugs (such as Proguard Noizezz) as they will cut out a bit of everything but more guitar than bass will go. I use these a lot and I can hear every instrument clearly with them.
