Olympic White 66/62 style Jazz Bass build
kevin_lindsay replied to kevin_lindsay's topic in Build Diaries
Lord Sausage - this will be of interest to you mate: Every build is a lesson in progress, and this one is no different. I had noticed a slight rub through midway through the build due to the very slight "blush I had mentioned earlier. This was addressed. I've used clear gloss as the top coat on my bass. My reason for this is that the original basses were bright white when new. The current creamy colour is due to the clear coat ""yellowing" over the years. I don't like tinted lacquer as it never looks authentic to my eye. So, the clear gloss on my bass will age naturally over the years. Here's a pic of the back of Paul Turner's '66 Jazz where you can see how yellow the clear top coat has become over the past 47 years. The Olympic White is still fairly vibrant underneath. so, the white is on, and the clear coat is on. Everything looks great, really white and vibrant. I'm using a thin application of colour and clear coat. But, I've now discovered something which is really handy. If you take a photo in natural light, it looks great - for example: However, if you take a pic in artificial light using your phone's flash, then any areas where the thin top coat has been rubbed through, will magically appear as a different colour! It's a horrible sensation seeing it, but it does mean that you can then correct the situation. Here's the same upper horn using the flash. At the upper left hand side of the horn as you look at the pic, you'll see a 10p piece sized area where the top clear coat has rubbed through (the area showing lighter in colour compared to the surrounding area with clear coat in place). The area of concern has now been keyed (lightly sanded) and a light coat of clear gloss applied. Allowed to dry for a few hours, then lightly flatted back and rubbed to a gloss again (the pic was taken after misting the clear gloss on. It's still to be flatted back anf buffed in the pic. That's now been done and its fine).. I took pics using the flash all over the body. That was the only area which needed attention. If I hadn't noticed it (or had just decided to leave it), then the finish would look perfectly okay for a while. However, in a year or two it would start to show a light patch where the top coat was missing - the light patch apppearing due to the surrounding clear coat starting to yellow. By ensuring that the Olympic White now has a full clear coat, I'll know that there will be a uniformity to the ageing process of the colour of my instrument. Also, some of you might be wondering how the area I "patched" between the pickups now looks? Here it is - you wouldn't know anything had been done. -
Olympic White 66/62 style Jazz Bass build

Here's a couple of pics of the control circuitry (with the brass screening plate in the bottom of the cavity). The Fender wiring diagram for a '62 reissue shows a 0.050uF in the neck, and an 0.030uF in the bridge. However, I'm used to the tone roll off you get on later basses with 0.022uF caps. So, I used a pair of close tolerance 0.022uF Sprague "orange barrels" in my setup. I wanted a plate that looked similar to the mid coloured ones used around 1962: Before '61 the plates were even lighter. In '66 the colour darkened: -

Grangur, yeah there was a lot of time and effort invested in this bass, but I'm pleased with the result. As for the decal, I just used it as the bass is based on some Fender reference points which I really like. Maybe I should have used my own logo, but I thought, "people seeing the bass with my name on the headstock, will just think it's a no-brand cheapo". So I used the Fender decal. Sausage - a full can would provide a good coating. I was trying for a super thin application, but that made it very easy to "rub through" Anyhow, here's the end result -

Okay, so I rubbed back a rectangular area between the pickup cavities. I sprayed more Olympic White and then removed the masking. That left a definite ridge between the newly sprayed lacquer and the existing lacquer. Next stage is to feather the edges to blend in with the existing finish. Once everything is blended in, I'll seal the new patch with clear coat and then buff everything back to a smooth shine. Here's a pic showing the new patch. I've been feathering the edge - you can see the difference between the untouched top edge, and the feathered, blended in lower edge. Bollocks!!! When doing the final buffing, I got a "blush" on the front - it's the slightly dark patch to the left, just below the upper left hand lug routing in the pic. I'm about to rub back the clear coat between the pickups, apply some more Olympic White. I'll then need to flat that, feather in the transition at the outer edges, then apply more clear coat (which will also need to be blended in to the existing finish. If that doesn't wirk, I'll need to re-do the whole body - aaaahh!!!!!! -

Okay, Photobucket is now up and running again for me - yippee. so, what's been happening since my last posts? Well, when I was flatting the back ready for buffing to a shine, I rubbed through to the white - creating a "blush" in the finish. It wasn't terribly noticeable, but because I was aware of it, my eye was constantly drawn to it. so, I rubbed the clear coat back to the Olympic White, then masked off the sides so I could re-apply more Olympic White to get a totally uniform finish. Then the masking was removed, and the new lacquer sanded back with wet & dry - with the edges feathered in to blend with the existing lacquer. The body has now had clear gloss lacquer sprayed, then everything has been flatted back, and buffed to a shine. Everything will be assembled and set up on Friday (it's Monday right now). I think it'll be pretty cool -
Nope, doesn't do anything for me I'm afraid.

Here's Paul and Rob soundchecking before the Larry Graham gig at the Jazz Cafe. Lsrry turned up early and jumped up on stage to join in the fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqiJNy9qAt4&feature=youtube_gdata_player

That's Dan. You might have seen him on tv last summer at various festivals singing with Dizzee Rascal. He was also a finalist on the X Factor a few years back

New 'Later' Series On The Way....Yawwwwwnnnn!
kevin_lindsay replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
But, the thing about TOTP was that it was part of the fabric of everyone's lives for decades. every Thursday evening the programme aired for 30 minutes. Whole families warched it. Some acts were pop dross, some were good, and sometimes there was sonething whuch blew your mind and created memories whuch still resonate decades later. Because it was on BBC One, it was something which the whole nation saw, and inevitably created a point of conversation afterwards. Fridays were spent at school or work talking about what was on. Music was a main talking point which no longer is the case as people aren't given music as a main part of their day to day lives anymore. the Cowell crap-athon now only presents acts as being worthwhile if they have a "back story". Any melodic factor is secondary to the tabloid garbage. "Later..." has many faults, but its the only ongoing live music programme around in the UK right now, and I'm glad it's there. -

I enjoyed it. Having acts playing live, with mistakes and fluctuations, is still preferable in my opinion, to the homogenised Simon Cowell fayre on offer elsewhere. Passenger - nice track. Lloyd Cole - I enjoyed the rawness of the band. I guess I'm just a fan of hearing people make a musical noise. I've been this way for 35 years, and my delight in music hasn't faded yet. -

Ive still to flatten the finish on the body, and then buff it to a shine. I placed the hardware in situ to get an idea as to how it's going to look when its assembled. http://www.flickr.com/photos/73415495@N05/10350782765/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/73415495@N05/10350783155/in/photostream/ -

Apparently my monthly bandwidth resets on the 28th of each month. I was thinking of upgrading the photobucket account, but its just something I use for fun. Vant see the need to pay out for something ive used for many years on a free basis. Anyone know if another free photo hosfing site?
