I'm rubbish at dialling in bass tones. I have an active jazz bass with aguilar preamp and nordstrand jazz pickups and a boss bass cube. I love the tone this guy gets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KjOhoH0dY4 Also in their heavier stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrGu6hkgno4 Just some tips on what frequencies to cut / boost etc to get me started would be lovely
Hmm sounds like he is using some pretty beefy cabs, i dont think you could replicate that sound with just Eqing. I tried to emulate a certain bass player recently, and the most significant change in sound was when i actually got some decent large heavy cabs. Anyway, i am a fan of opeth, i reckon the bassist uses a pretty flat EQ, with low mids boosted a little but the high end rolled off. Again i think alot of it is to do with some decent cabs.
Steve Swallow has a really unique custom bass and plays exclusively with a pick. John Entwhistle used a pick some of the time and his later basses were almost as esoteric. I rarely play with a pick but I like my unscratch-plated basses getting that nice authentic road-worn look. Alex
I do know that plectrum players with custom basses exist The question was why do plectrum players seem to not aquire or use them as much

Hey guys. Something i have noticed in the years playing bass is that how few bass players who use plectrums more then fingers, do not or dont want to own a custom shop bass. (IE not a J or P clone) Why is that? I know its not the rule as i know at least one or two people who play with a plectrum exclusively and have custom shop basses (IE expensive), But for those who do not have that sort of bass and get by with a P or J, why do you avoid Custom shop basses? I have a couple of theory's. 1) A good ole P with heavy strings and plectrum sounds awesome. An expensive bass with god knows how much worth of wood and electronics in it, wont sound any better if not worse when played with a plectrum. 2) A plectrum dings up the nice woods of a unscratchplated bass. 3) Plectrum users have their feet firmly placed on the ground Also for those of you who do use a plectrum and have a custom shop bass, is it any different to the usual P or J clone? Why did you choose it? Anyway i am very curious, and please dont degenerate into a plectrum VS fingers debate. Cheers! Rob.
Chris Beedster and Shockwave have probably owned most of them There's a nice Spector Euro 5-string in blond flame maple that I seem to have seen at least 3 or 4 times
As dissapointing as it sounds, i dont actually buy a huge amount on BC, the majority i get off of Ebay or other sources. now compared to most people i still do buy more basses on BC then most, that gives you an idea of how much i buy in total INCLUDING ebay

I have seen the keiper name around, mostly its just a cheap chinese bass that are sold by the dozen to mostly online shops and the factory puts on the shops name or brand onto the bass headstock.

Hey guys. I have been neglecting a bass playing technique for a long time, which is picking, i have decided in a black metal project to do Vocals and bass. However i couldnt do all those 300BPM songs using fingers, so a pick is in order I have no idea on what constitutes as good pick technique, I chose the lower arm moving type technique. Here is a video of it as is it. Please remember this is pretty much my first attempt at using a plectrum on a bass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfvIc5hS-wM If you have hard trouble hearing me skip to 3:08. I play heavier there. As you can probably hear, i am having problems with consistancy. Comments and critiscms welcome. I am here to learn! Cheers! Rob.
A question for the heavy fretless guys, how do you get on with hearing yourself for pitch and intonation, I'm not suggesting that because it's fretless we have to have flawless intonation etc, etc, far from it...play it how you feel I say.......but doesn't it get tricky with a heavy band to hear what's going on with a fretless? I know a young player who uses fretless with his super heavy band, how he does it I'll never know. I have to be able to hear everything when using my fretless in a live situation just so I can feel confident enough that my pitch isn't too far out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlVET2DXNMM...re=channel_page This is probably not a good representative clip of my band. (IF you listen with very good subs/speakers you can definitely hear the low end coming from the bass. Read on if you can ) However there are two things to watch out for when trying to cut through. For a few months i tried boosting my mids and treble to cut through, it just didnt work at all. Too much and it sounded very scratchy and whenever it was just the bass just playing it was awful to listen to. I paired up the current 1x15 i was using with another 1x15 and there was an instant improvement. Why? More bottom end, you have to have a rig that can steer clear of the bass heavy guitars and completely undercut them, Add a little mids and you should be set! I completely undercut the rest of the band now. There is still room for improvement with the dusty end of the fretboard, hence why i have invested in a 4x10 to go with one my 1x15's see if i can get some nice Mids out of the tweeter and 4x10's. With any luck i will be replacing the bartolini electronics with something a bit more suited for cutting through. Another method of cutting through is to play slightly off the actual note, not enough to detract from the song, just a little, it actually helps amazingly well to cut through. Oh and another method is to play something other then root notes! To make sure i am in pitch takes practice, know the songs, have enough bottom end to "feel" the vibration of the note. Plus lines help We'll be recording very soon after i finish writing a few more songs. Hopefully the Pedulla is up for the job
The maker is Michel Fournelle - website here
Thats amazing! Thankyou very much!!! -
Not really. I keep getting side tracked onto other things. My living-room is like a bloody workshop these days  I dealt with the neck issues (or rather neck pocket issues - aaaaah nobody thought about looking there ) a while back - so that's all good now. I rubbed the dodgy varnish back to bare wood at the same time. some people have since commented on the nice "satin" finish - until I tell them there's no finish at all, it's just bare maple rubbed back with 1500 grade. I love the natural look but I'm constantly humming and hawing about staining it either dark blue or green. I routed and filled the truss rod access groove then veneered the face of the headstock in maple to match the body. I did a TR cover here not long ago and I'm currently procrastinating over a pickguard because I noticed a few fingernail marks appearing from slapping. I've been playing about with paper templates and have settled with something along these lines......... ..... but I'll extend the bottom bit up into lower horn a tad more and I'll take the top hump forward somewhere in line with the 16th fret i think. I've got some nice matt black pg material but I might go with clear if the black is too imposing. I don't know if you knew but I broke the bridge pup (or more correctly my hefty 40w soldering iron did) so currently I have a set of massively powerful Hohner pups in there (courtesy of our own Geoff Byrne's 5er). They are nice but lack that boutique feel that this bass deserves. I lapped them to a shiny finish because of how knackered they were and they look way better than the Barts ever did. I'm thinking about making maple veneers for them too but I know these pups won't be staying in here too long so I might not bother. That's about it really. edit : Oh yeah, I'm considering making it headless too.
I reckon you should go with a clear guard! need to show that maple off! I was personally gonna get some MM humbuckers in there, i reckon they'd work well with the Schack preamp. For the love of god dont make it headless, i'd have to buy it back if you did Cheers for the update!
Agree it has bits of Zon, Pedulla and Veillette in there but pretty sure it isn't any of them. Firstly though, the original quote asks about Remy Beauchamp. Isn't this Dominique "Forest" Lapointe? That's what the video suggests and from the date that would fit. From another thread I found there was a link to this page, where you can download three short hi-res videos (click on the pictures to download) plugging the DVD. Some slightly better closeups on that but only fleetingly. The OP on the thread that gave the link to the videos also said that Lapointe was his bass teacher at the time, so he may know
You sir are correct! I allways assumed it was Remy as he also played fretless and played for the longest time compared to lapointe. Ah well, lapointe is in a new project here. http://www.augurymetal.com/ However he is using a fretted bass in the this band. Note here is his new bass, which has the same mark on the upper horn that the green fretless has. Theres also a better shot of the headstock with a logo. Though i cant tell what it says.
