Well i know i was going to buy a new amp, but something came up as usual! Heres the Blurb.
Purchased in 1992 and owned by the original buyer since this is a great example of a fretless five string Musicman Stingray. The original Pau Ferro fingerboard was changed in 1993 by John Diggins of JD to the current beautiful piece of Ebony with maple stained fret markers and high polish polyester finish. The fingerboard has been re-polished since it was originally fitted and the whole bass is in very good condition with no missing paint finish and no rust on the fittings. The back of the highly figured bird's eye maple neck has been finished in a high polish finish to match the fingerboard. The unique bass has a wonderful feel and tone due to the Ebony fingerboard. This bass comes with the original fitted hard case.
Should be arriving Friday. +1 for Mark who was very nice to talk to over the phone, and i'll have to take him up on the offer to try out some serious ampage soon! Anyway... this might not be the only thing i buy today Rob.

Pms regarding Windmill
-
Still looking for a lift from bristol
-
That windmill fretless is amazing, i'd love to own it
-
Oh you mean the autotuner, yeah give that the vocals position. The scream could actually pull out some pretty good screams for what it is. However i have criticised this band and video to death already, cant be arsed to do it anymore!

One thing i have noticed is this. Keep a beater bass around, very high tension high gauge strings, with a high action, when your not playing seriously or just rehearsing without the band, play it. Get your Ken smith bass to a more acceptable (normal) action. Play the Ken Smith after and you would be amazed at hell well and easy it is to play
It's a bolt on - the potential for setup is unlimited, unlike a neck through. One other question, are you using the same brand and gauge of strings on both the Squier and the new one? Also - what is the scale length of your new bass? Is the Squier the same or longer/shorter scale?
Good point with scale length, I hate 35" basses, the string tension is far too high and a bit of a stretch to play.
Not in a negative way but I think your right. I like playing fretted and have grown accustomed to it and appreciate the fact that I'm more suited to fretted than fretless playing. Indeed I'd like to have another pop at fretless playing properly, but I'm just happy with where I am and with where I'm going .
You sure your that happy where your going, according to the thread title, you aint! Either way, i have a nice Pedulla Fretless 5 for you to play on in Bristol, if your ever in town, by all means come on over and play some poor intonated jazz.
-
Hehe, Well my intonation sucked alot when i first started playing fretless, but grew into it. It sounds to me you dont want to try and stick to new ways of playing.
-
I am the exact same as you with tastes to action. I use weakman strings as well! My solution was to go fretless! They can go lower and no frets to worry about buzz!

"So yeah, i am equipped like a devil's horn down there.... no seriously!" (Oh wait this is not facial, sorry , hang on i have to put the name bare or faced into the comments? oh well ) "MR Simmons has BAREly got nothin' on me!" "Red light...turns me soo.... angryfaced!"

Hey guys. How close is the valve sound on the Hybrid Ampegs? I would love a Ampeg SVT CL or other all valve head but finding a second hand one come up for sale seems far fetched. How close are the Tube Pre/SS powered amps? Do they get the SVT valve tone bang on? Or not quite? I think i am very close to buy Rob.
I am a massive A Wilhelm Scream fan. Brian puts most technical bassists to shame. His recorded sound is basically his Stingray with a little dirt. That live rig is no doubt an Ampeg SVT-CL with an 810E I think. The thing is...Stingrays are so 'obvious' in a mix....its hard to emulate unless you get one. As he shows, even with fingerstyle, the Stingray just sounds aggressive and cuts through the mix...in a good way. I think he probably still does use Ampeg...or Mesa/Aguilar if he has jumped the boat like a lot of other rock bassists.
If i get an Ampeg, i'll probably have enough money left over for a Stingray anyway Rob.
-
Live Video of Wilhelm scream. Looks like Brians using an ampeg (Left hand side and close ups) What ampeg is that one?
-
Ok, well i'll be going out an expedition i reckon to try some amps out. I think i should include some my fave bass tones from artists. Brian Robinson - A Wilhelm Scream. Sound like an SVT maybe? I really cant tell. All i know is that he uses a stingray! Quo Vadis's old bass player. (There is a bit later in the song where you can hear pretty much just bass. Mark King's Fingerstyle tone. at 1:57 I guess one way you can descrive the tones i am after is burpy. I may add a few more later on. ideas? I am more of a fan of the first two videos tonewise. Probably far better in a heavy metal setting anyway!

Numerous people are recommending me mesas for some reason! Haha. Possibly. Gk? Honestly i have never played them. I have no idea what sort of sounds they can reproduce. How do you guys feel about Trace Elliot V6's? Seems to hit the right buttons. However the only examples i can hear of them are people playing Mark King slap riffs. Does it have the Low End reproduction ability that i need for downtuned metal?
I have no idea what would be right for you....BUT...what I can say is that I used to spend a lot on basses before I would consider spending on amps/cabs. I had the same rig for ages, (Trace 400W head and similar Peavy cabs to you). The Trace wasn't really a problem, despite being too massive. The problem was scrimping on cabs. Cheap cabs make your bass sound half as good as it could....now I buy cabs more than anything else. I love my LM3 (very clean) and Orange AD200b Mk3 (VERY dirty!) but neither would suit you. How about a GK 1001RB (cant rem the exact model number)? Get a really nice cab and that amp will be great, and VERY loud. Also, consider the Shuttlemax 6.
As far as cabs are concerned, baby steps amp first, whilst i am still in the mood. I buy more cabs then i do amps.
Matamp GT200... job done ...although the 1K is 300 short and it wont go down to 2ohms
I have a feeling it wouldnt have too much of a modern sound to be honest.
Mesa 400+ no question
Possibly, i am put off by the Titan review though, maybe a Mesa is not the thing i am looking for. Any big names use the 400+ or any mesa in general?
A massive deviation from the topic, but I saw your picture and only one thought occured; are you chewbacca? more importantly, when you've got your new potentially awesome set up complete, can I come play it since it says you're a Bristolian? I'll bring biscuits as payment (chocolate digestives of course).
Course no problem Also if it helps, i play with fingers 100% which might help more in the amp buying decision
I think you just described my Ampeg SVT 5 Pro Hybrid Valve/Mosfet 1350 Watts Peak Bi amp-able Dirty channel Clean sounding 2 OHMs Looks f***ing awesome.
Not sure if i would want the SVT sound though... hmmmmmm. Keep trying though!
