1. What a looker! Generous F holes and the book matching on the back looks lovely.
2. Tricky Audio Greenboy F212 cab review. (Im not Ed Friedland but here goes) Well I chose a good week to finally pick up my F212 fro Guy Trigg at Tricky HQ near Lincoln UK. Guy gave me a few tips on the set up of the speaker and after a coffee, a play through the speaker with my set up (Boosey Hawkes Excelsior Ply Upright GK Head) and a run down of his gear (Nice Engleheart) I headed back north for a four gig weekend. Thanks Guy. Fri 26/9/14. Rose Hill Tavern. Small square bar, no stage, low ceiling. soft furnishings. Holds about 60 people. One of the good things about the band Fickle Lilly is that we have two professional Sound Engineers in the band so I played bass and got Ally Lee (Who has a good set of lug’s) to tweak the graphic and amp. Two minutes later the whole rig came to life. I play through a GK 1001 MK 2 with a graphic EQ in the send - return. We took out the low mids on the amp had full mid scoop on the contour slope everything below 100hz with small cuts @ 500hz, 1.25k, 5k, and a nice slap spike @ 6.3k. So, theres no rumble, the mids are fat, (despite the cut on the amp) the speakers don’t fart out when played hard and it has a nice spitty top end. Oh and did I mention its LOUD! Geordie Waters our drummer plays a 26” Gretch bass drum miked up through the PA and then fed to his 200w floor monitor. The Guitarist uses a Kemper through the PA and the Keys run through the PA The Greenboy more than kept up with this, it filled the room and I still had a lot left in the tank, I wasn’t going DI. probably won’t ever have to. Sat 27/9/14 The Q Jumpers band. Guitars x2 Harp player and a stand up Drummer (small loud kit) Headed up to the Northumbrian Gliding club to play a bike rally. Not really an outdoor gig as we were set up in the Aircraft Hanger but the Hanger doors were open at one end, big tall stage and a hired in PA rig. I knew the horns were working in the cab as I could here the slap coming back at me a with a few seconds delay. Grrr! A quick line check and we were on. I had no problems hearing the rig and got a thumbs up from one of the bikers who has heard the band before so knows how we sound. No the sound guy didn’t use the DI feed I gave him from the GK, No need I was loud enough……There y’go. Sat 28/9/14 A night at the Schooner Inn, Gateshead. Fickle Lilly. Its a long bar, holds about 120 people. no stage. Again, no problems here with the sound just big smiles off my band mates. Even the drummer can make out my feeble attempts at keeping in time!!! Sun 29/9/14 the Q Jumpers A real test of this cab. Help! We’re playing in a railway arch, outdoors. Big stage. The place is so boomy its unreal but y’know what? I didn’t need to alter my eq, just turned the volume up a wee bit. Yes you heard right, turned it up. Thats what I got told to do at the soundcheck? And did it cope with the the Boom***est sound that a band get? Well of course it did. Turns out that its not the bass sound that has a boom, just everyone else. And why would I want to buy a Greenboy in the first place? Well I’m a bit of a cynic when it comes to buying gear, a lot of it is Snake Oil, but there was one real moment of enlightenment for me. Mark Robertson the bass player from The Legendary Shack Shakers Is a Cabinet Builder so when someone of his standing is building these cabs and using them they have to be that good. I bought this cab without ever hearing it but I did a bit of homework reading the info on the Greenboy website and reading reviews. These cabs are not cheap and I gave the builder a headache by asking for a unique colour scheme and decals But I can assure you that they are worth every penny. Oh and Ed Friedland has, as I’m writing this posted a review of his Greenboy 112. You want to know what my upright sounds like? It sounds a bit like Ed’s Rockabilly bass but with a bit more of Me in it.
3. Jeez! I would have had this in a blink, to match my fretless....... But just pulled the trigger on a GreenBoy Cab......Fu%c..Sh*t..T*t Wa£nk!>...Its for nowt. Jump on it NOW!
4. I've used J tone Pups, their Big Double is a KnK killer with a really hot signal. Most piezos are all the same, the real black magic comes with whatever materials the builder uses to sandwich the unit. SBW make decent units http://www.superiorbassworks.com J tone http://www.ebay.co.u...p-/200613316399 J tone is local to me and I know the builder, he is a very knowledgeable guy and great to deal with.
5. Hi Basshead56........Yer link didn't work! Seems like its gonna take that long for me to find one.
6. Has anyone any idea where i might get my hands on one of these basses? I have tried a few shops local and in London and have even rang the distributer JHS but no luck. I'm keeping my eye on E bay all the time and have only seen a lefty come up in the last 6 months. I saw an american band, The Del Lords and the bass (Strung with flats) just sounded like the fattest thing I have ever heard. Bad Gas for me! WANT!
7. Sorted! BTW could you do a quick review of those Tynex D+G ? Im always looking for an alternative to guts.
8. Hi Clarky! I will give them a go. PM'd you
9. Cheers Geoff! I'm enjoying your Youtube bass lessons!
10. Thanks for the feedback everyone. Si600 the disc was a sound-post patch and the long piece of wood was a new fingerboard.
11. I bought an old upright from a bandmate, I always wanted a solid wood bass and having restored a couple of old ply basses I thought I would give it a go. As you can see from the link the hammerite paint was there to hide the cracks in the top and ribs. A patch was needed for the front so the top had to come off. All the techniques used for the repairs were from youtube/tinternet/facebook I really enjoyed the experience and would encourage anyone to have a go. Here is the Youtube link to the picture vid I made. Thats the sound of the bass strung with Spirocores.
12. That Primavera is not a bad starter bass but not worth sending to a Luthier. However if you wanted a "do-er-up" bass and you were going to learn how to DIY then it may be worth phoning Gear4music and asking for a deal. BTW Gear4music seem to have a busted bass on flea bay every other week. Makes you think what happens to them on the journey from China?
13. Hi mate I will take these. Cheers ! Pm'd you
14. Hi My bass is a Boosey Hawkes Ply. KnK pickup + clickie. I play in a Roots rock band and a RnR/Billy band both with loud drummers, mostly on small stages/bars. (Standing close to my rig, GK and 4x10 31 band graphic) I have tried most of the above methods and they all have an effect on feedback. The F hole covers (Shaped out of a gardeners kneeling mat) worked best……and then I stumbled on a post in the Upright Bass Players Union Facebook page, this was all about double sound posts. this caused a bit of a stir, with some people for, some against. So I thought I would give it a go. I got some spruce dowel from BandQ cut it to length and fitted it between the bass bar and the Bass F hole. Bingo! no feedback at all. I can stand directly in front of the cab and still own the drummer!! the 31 band EQ helps but is set mostly flat ( I only occasionally have to adjust the sliders) The electric tone of the bass hasn't changed. The trade off is loosing the acoustic tone of the bass but after a while it gets easy to fit/remove the post. It costs next to nothing to try, it may not suit you or your bass but it works for me!
15. Hey Geoff Just stumbled upon these lessons and there's some great stuff here. I'm trying to brush up on my chart reading (Jazz standards) and these DVDs have helped spur me on. (Must get round to buying a decent bow as well) Thanks man!
16. PTB Think I will give these a go PM'd you
17. I was looking at this bass. £700 is far too steep given the work your gonna have to do. £150-200 more like. IMO
18. Wish i had known about this when I repaired a crack in my DB!
19. This sounds as if it should be in the DB forum,,Just saying!
20. Fek! That was sharpish.....Gimme the nod if it don't work out!
21. PM'd you Peterscott8
22. I've had two and can say that pound for pound you wont get a punchier combo. (Often wondered what two stacked would sound like?)
23. Sorry Peterscott8 just noticed the V. No go for me, been there......
24. Open to trades/offers.
