1. OK, I think we've got it mostly under control with a load of IP blocks (which we can use without worrying about whether we'll block new members because the addresses are China based). There maybe flare ups occasionally but we'll jump on them as we discover them. The more they post, the more lock down we apply, they won't win.
2. Where's Tony Goggle when you really need him?
3. Thanks Ian, it seems to be coming thick and fast at the moment but its bedtime here. The other mods have been made aware of it, so hopefully one of them will be able to take over.
4. Ever see Starship Troopers II?
5. We seem to be in the middle of another targeted spam attack, but this one is from China rather than India. We're staying on top of it but no telling when they'll give up. In the meantime, thanks for your patience.

DNS issue

OK we've swapped nameservers so hopefully that'll be the end of issues for the time being.

8.
My parents finally decided to tell me that apparently Sarah Beeny lives in the village next door to us. I still don't know if they're joking or not though.
I once auditioned to be co-presenter on Streets Ahead with her. Thames Talkback nicked my ideas and never hired me. Can I have a violin please?
9.
What basic tools do I need?
Thats where it gets a little expensive...although you can get parts in varying degrees of pre-fabrication from places like Stewmac.

DNS issue

Phatmonkey and I are looking into it. We need to swap over the nameservers but the domain name provider has completely changed both the user control panel and settings...nothing makes sense any more...stay tuned.
11. thats quite nice
12. real shame, Trev (G77) has that kit and it still works pretty well.
Man.... Even tho I come here ever so un-frequently, I know of him and have exchanged a couple of lines with him. This is horrible news!
I bet you never spat in his coke. Coke drink that is, not lines of coke.
15.
On a side issue - as my job is a consultant in marketing and finance, I was wondering if anyone had contact details for Mr Burman or anyone else who may have an interest in his brilliant amps. I am certain that, with a little persuasion, I could get a major British manufacturer to reissue these amplifiers, if only on a short 'limited issue' basis. I would be happy to do all I can to help at no charge - ever. All we need then is for a high profile player to endorse them and ................................? Any contact info would help.
You'd need to get in line I'm afraid. Others have already approached him, including Matamp. But Gregg is extremely protective of his intellectual copyright and isn't interested in sharing. He's also asked that his contact details be kept confidential. Good on ya for being enthusiastic though. You'll find a lot of the designs are based around the same preamp design, with varied power sections. Its worth trying the JJ KT77's though. They're significantly different to the sound of EL34s. There are some stories from Gregg here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=58420
16.
Tx Kiwi, informative and creative! I might even have some around here somewhere
If you don't...I've just found this: http://www.defendapack.co.uk/postal_tube_e...aps_plastic.htm Minimum purchase quantities though...but at least you know they ARE out there.
17. It was Christopher Higgins in full Widow T w a n k y panto garb...wasn't it boys and girls?
18. Try a graphic/art store. I remember noticing the bungs were very similar to the plastic ends on cheap poster carrying tubes... ...what they'll do is tighten up your sound in the lower frequencies.
19.
A significant amount of invention and incremental innovation preceding the Steinberger system (hardly radical, but a major disjunction) then more incrementalism in the period since. I'm not discounting some real progress (neck through, filter-based pres, neo etc.) but it has to Steinberger for me
+1 But I'd suggest Fender (50s/60's), Alembic (70's), Steinberger (80's). I could add Status with their Stealth Mk II bass, the use of epoxy foam for the core was an innovative step. Not sure the rest of the instrument followed through though. Parker could have been a contender but they just ended up with a brittle sounding instrument for all the technology it had in its construction. Buggered if I know who would fit in the last 10 or 15 years otherwise, there hasn't really been a lot of demand for innovation in the market.
20. great basses, did anyone get a fix on the year? I have a hunch its more likely to be 83 rather than 93.
21. got any pics? Superglue and nail burnishers can work for chips if they don't go to the wood. Superglue can also work for cracks so long as they're just in the finish.
22. Celinder are no longer retailing, although Chris used to own a music shop I believe. He's got a small workshop close to the airport these days.
23. All pickups are voiced to some degree. They have a frequency peak that is dependent on a number of factors including resistance and voltage. The magnets used will also affect the sound of the pickup, ceramic magnets tend to sound brighter than alnico. Even Alembic pickups have a voicing but their peaks are too low to influence the sound of the bass significantly however they sounded brighter than other basses when first introduced because they used ceramic magnets. There are many other manufacturers who do the same thing these days. I have a custom set of Wizards on my Spectors that follow similar principles.
24. He had to give up playing drums due to back problems. He's a highly under rated drummer, awesome feel.
25.
I remember passing up on a 6 string Elan about 6 years or so ago because there was some deformity in the neck near the nut and the laminates were lifting. Other than that it was a beautiful bass with in madagascar ebony top. It had a very piano like tone. That really convinced me that the elan's are great basses.
The laminates weren't lifting and it sold 2 weeks after I listed it with the Bass Centre. You never played the instrument. I sold it because the tone was too dark and woolly sounding. EDIT: The top was Macassar ebony.
