4. Its a Series 1 or a later model Energy.
5.
I'm also interested .....what is the best amp / cab for a Smith???.................... I feel GAS.
Something quite neutral sounding. I had recommended the EA to Stew, my Genz and GK rigs were also good. Class D amp sections generally sound pretty good to my ears. What didn't work so well for me were Eden and SWR mainly because both the bass and the amp have scooped mids so makes hearing yourself difficult on stage. Having said that I've seen a load of hip hop/neoSoul bassists use exactly that combination. I played through an mosfet Ampeg head once at The Premises in Hackney and it sounded OK but didn't have a lot of focus to the mids.

7.
Well, here it is! Second coat has gone on, needs a few more. Its brighter in real life and has blacklight properties much like the DR Neons.
Interesting, I was musing over a paint scheme for one of the spectors using neon paint with the same properties. I sidelined the idea after learning that the glow effect tends to fade over time with exposure to UV. Its possible to use a UV guard in any clear coat but it then blocks the reflectivity.
8. We've decided to take advantage of the latest upgrade of the Invision software for the forum but Phatmonkey doesn't have the time to do it. So we're looking for a website developer with experience in database management to carry out the installation process. We're happy to negotiate a fee in exchange for a guaranteed delivery deadline and fully functioning upgrade. If this upgrade goes well, we'll probably keep the person on for future development work. If you or anyone you know would be interested in doing the work for us, drop me an email via the admin inbox with a CV and contact deets. cheers Steve
9. I'm not sure I understand why someone would wish to make a stingray sound like a jazz...unless they didn't have a jazz bass I guess. What does the mod actually do to the signal? Change the response of the pickup?
10. Congrats - you have the right amp for a Smith bass.
11. Have you got anything in black?
12. hullo from hell?
13. The earlier amps have red transformers and the script logo, while the later ones have a sans serif logo and orange transformers with slightly higher input gain. No serial database was kept so I couldn't tell you how old it is unfortunately.
14. sweet, its a nice early one.
15. oof, my bank account thinks its a good job someone beat me to it. That neck is gorgeous.
16. Fantastic amps! I'd still have both of mine if they were lighter.
17. site's down - bandwidth exceeded...not fair
18. Very little I suspect apart from volume, depending on whether the 400 has 6550 or 6L6GC valves. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesa_Boogie Demand for a more powerful amp led to the development of the Bass 400, which replaced the D180 in mid-1985. It used six 6550 power tubes to push out about 250 watts; however, the cascading-gain channels were replaced with two separate hi- and low-gain channels. Mesa's supply of 6550 tubes was cut short in the late 1980s and they were forced to sell the 400 with 6L6GC tubes, reducing its output to that of the D180. The solution came in early 1989 in the form of the Bass 400+. It was the same as the 400 in most respects but was powered via twelve 6L6GC tubes for nearly 360 watts of power.
19. Thanks Colin. The level of spamming is becoming insane. I think this explains why email spam has gone down recently, forums are being used instead.

21. Tony Goggle and his 12 finger tapping adaptation of Rick James' 'Super Freak', on his debut solo album.
22. lovely gigging set up
23. Great value basses once you replace the electronics and bridge. I love the necks in particular.
24.
I have gone with Suhr vintage pickups which are absolutely fantastic on the stack know circuit. It weighs 9lbs with the allparts neck which isnt particularly nice so Im hoping it will be just under 9lb with my flamed neck! Sounds incredible too and is strung with D'adario chromes flats.
Awesome work Wes! I'm more than a little envious and a matching p-bass would be the bees proverbials. Any chance of some sound clips?
25.
Mid 80's 'rays have very little to offer over the current models except mutes and mojo (how about that for the name of a second hand bass shop? ) so the canny buyer has to ask "what am I getting?".
About 20 years of breaking in and settling?
