1. Thank you very much chaps. very kind.
2. I wanted to share my story about band mates being fabulous for a change,we often get threads about how band members irritate us this one is about how proud I am. The attentive amongst you will know that I have stopped gigging...it causes me great pain and tiredness plus I now have to claim benefits, so it would be wrong of me to get paid for gigging. I wanted to do "one last gig" for my Sixtieth birthday which was on July 14th and one of my sons let a former band member know that. The response was lovely. I used to play in a Stereophonics "tribute" band (we just played Stereophonics songs...we didn't do the look alike thing) we were quite successful (played main Stage at Rock city several times) and the other members still play regularly. The singer and keyboard players are both full time musos earning a very good living, the lead guitarist does two or three gigs a week. They all said that they would do a gig with me ...for free. Everyone cleared their diaries and said that they would be pleased to do it unfortunately the drummer was working as a sound recordist on the tour de France for tv and July 14th was a no go. I think that it is testament to how nice these guys are that they would drop everything to give me one last chance at making a fool of myself. At the risk of making this rather personal post too long, I now unashamedly promote the gig that has been arranged...We are playing on Friday (25th ) at Hogarths in Ilkeston Derbyshire. I am therefore following the Queen's example and having two birthdays this year By the way ...just to wind up the " never play for free" mob ...I am paying the PA guys £250.00 oh and the pub is giving us all free beer (I can walk....well...stagger home)
3. I can agree with that ....many moons ago I organised an indoor cricket team ......Platting fog, herding cats....piece of cake! Mind you it did lead to me captaining Chris Cairns once....another topic perhaps!
4.
Milly vanily wasn't quite an artist...
Mmmmm I think that's the point. I do not know how old you are but I am sixty and alongside all the "artists" That we all know and love...Beatles ,Stones ,led zeppelin...erm ...Maiden , er ...oh I don't know ..whomever you think is cool (groovy baby!) there has always been "pop" acts... that have been contrived to "make money". Indeed all the great acts "made money" when they could...it's what made the world go around. I have a friend who was a part of the original Black lace ..Agadoo and all that pap....He is a brilliant guitarist and musician that made a lot of people happy with his " pop"music .... You don't have to like it ...but hey ...somebody does...and that's the whole point of music...well I think so anyway. Enjoy your career...I have enjoyed mine and I genuinely wish you well.
5. Where was it shipped to? maybe one of us could collect it? worth a try..... .If it's near me I'd be happy to help though getting it down to you might end up being a whole new "Bass Relay"
6. If you have been happy with the PA you now have why not buy it? Your band mate gets his/her money and you get to stay on familiar turf; or is it too expensive? Just a thought ...good luck!
7. Cue my favourite story regarding the esteemed Mr Pegg...... In the distant past I read an interview with him in (I think) Bass guitar magazine, where he said that he was now sponsored by............. WADSWORTH SIX X To hell with all that getting free gear ...free beer is the way to go
8. Fantastic news.So pleased for you. Excellent tracking skills too!
9. Helloooo! I too reside in Ilkeston. There are quite a few decent players here actually ( I am not claiming to be one of them!). You'll find me in The QC,or Hogarths or The Burnt Pig or The Spanish bar or ...well most of the pubs on South street actually Come and say hello...I am having a 60th birthday party at Hogarths on Friday 25th August ..my band are playing along with one or two guests.. Enjoy your foray into the wonderful world of bass. Ray.
10. Rust for Glory...a really rather good Neil young "tribute" band, featuring our very own Bigjohn on bass guitar. They are at Route 44 in Acocks green, Birmingham. I have a hotel booked nearby ,continuing my ad hoc tour of the uk watching some fellow basschatte'rs bands .
11. Buxton 1973 was the first but went to many throughout the Seventies....Buxton again in '74 Reading three years running,Knebworth for the Stones ..Blackbush for Dylan the list goes on My mates and I were gluttons for punishment...horrible toilets, cans of ..erm..."liquid " being thrown everywhere and nearly always rain, rain and more rain....loved it all though and saw some amazing bands. http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/buxton-73-03-info.html
12. Ha ha Pete This could go on forever. My English grammar skills are really quite poor. I managed to scrape a GCE O'Level but I am afraid it's been downhill all the way since the heady days of 1973! Just to keep on topic, is it Country 'n' Western ,Country and Western or Western or ....well you get the picture
13.
Misspelling their what..? That's the usefulness of inverted commas, to denote that it's a quote from the original post, and so... ...I must apologise for misspelling 'their'. ...
Yes Dad you are quite right of course. I did realise it at the time. I was being lazy. I know,I know, mere seconds to press the up key and the 2 to achieve grammatical correctness. I cannot even use the excuse that I was "tipsy" at the time. Oh the shame
14. Before Dad comes along to admonish me I must apologise for misspelling their ......Although in my defence my comment could just as easily have been placed into the Drunk thread in off topic.
15. I went to see a Country and Western band that wanted me to join them ,a few years ago...I was terrified when the audience all stated firing their six guns into the air ...I kid you not this did happen ( along with the line dancing) I decided that it was not for me. It may not happen now of course ...it was some thirty years ago but just be aware 'shell.
16.
We got asked to play at the Great Scottish Tatty Run today. Well, there was more standard running involved too, but the Tatty Run was part of the event and I liked it: run with a sack of potatoes on your back... and at the end take them home. It was a charity event in Holyrood Park, which was great as the weather has been fantastic. They invited us to play a couple of days ago and... why not? Backline provided, just show up and play... (I did bring my Mesa + Two10, as they allowed us to park right there, so...). There was no payment as such, but it's one of those gigs that are easy and right in your backyard and sound fun. In the end, we took a sack of potatoes home each I know some say that music pays peanuts, but...
I knew there would come a time when I would regret splitting up with my ex......she owns a lovely apartment overlooking Holyrood park I must admit that I miss the music in Edinburgh... especially Bedford Falls et al at The Barony
17. I didn't see it but did hear her on the Ken Bruce show yesterday morning doing the same song ....I thought it sounded pretty ropey then I assumed it was just that she was singing so early in the day....maybe not!
18. I watched a couple of bands on the bbc and thought that ,for a change, the bass sounded fabulous. I suppose they must have taken a signal from the main desk.
19. I'm sorry ,you cant do that. We are already called bandname
20. I've met a few. I have helped a couple when gear needed picking up and I have bought gear from members. I have even booked hotels and gone to see a couple of bands that members play in. Every interaction has been a joy.
21. What night is it on? I used ti live in Huthwaite and have gigged in all of the pubs (though most are now supermarkets )
22. Shared.....Sorry to hear of your loss....B*ST*RDS indeed!
23. Many moons ago (the mid Seventies) we were booked to play at a pub in Redmile in the vale of Belvoir. It was a well know venue and we were excited at being booked there to play on a Sunday afternoon. We were guided to the "function room" alongside the pub and were a little bit surprised to be asked if they could put a tape player through our PA. It transpires that we were "supporting" a stripper! we played three sets and in-between them a "lady" would come on and remove her clothes to the taped music. Our drummer kindly offered to operate the machine ( we were eighteen and desperately happy to be around a naked female ). We played to a completely empty room....Stripper...packed the place out ...we come back on, not one person stayed. It was nice seeing some boobies but completely soul destroying to play. We refused further gigs there.
24. Bloomin 'eck Shell ....that went a bit sideways! I understood the humour AND I guessed it was Kev straight away.
25.
Um, not to put too fine a point on it but looking at your listed interests, I won't be dipping a toe in your pond no matter how you nicely you introduce it. Welcome to Basschat anyway. I am running a TE1818 cab as an aux to my 300w Ashdown combo with its 15. I thought there might be eq problems but so far I am really liking it. I do tend to leave it fairly flat across the five bands of the combi though. I can't vouch for gig levels yet but I am optimistic going from results practising at home at low levels. If you use a lot of effects this might be inflexible however.
Why? what's wrong with Golf?
