1.
Yeah I know, probably one of the most talked about brands on the net of recent times, but has anyone here imported one into the country yet? I'm really considering importing one from Rondo as a workhorse, but am always a bit cautious about buying from abroad. Any opinions on SX/accounts of experiences with Rondo apreciated!
To answer the question (assuming you've not searched already) I think the only way to get an SX branded bass is to import them from Rondo. So yes, pretty much anyone on here with an SX has had it imported and said the experience has been fine. I say 'SX branded' because other basses are apparently the same thing, but with a different name on the headstock but are readily available in the UK (Jim Deacon being one)
 2. Has anyone got any spare wire for connecting electrics inside a guitar/bass? Maybe you've finished a project and have a wee bit left over that you don't need? I'm looking for somewhere in the region of 1/2 a metre, if anyone has some? Cheers
 3.
Unfortunately it's really hard to see much useful detail from the typically rubbish Ebay pics - when your friend gets the bass, try & get some clearer & more detailed photos. Headstocks, pickups, bridge, neckplates etc are useful clues for getting an idea about age & origin - and the pics here succeed in hiding most of these quite well! My first impression is mid-late 60s, possibly Aria-related (although it's not a 1220 - this had a 335-body shape & offset dot markers, afaik) - and I think, from what I can see from the photos - it's related to this: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=18646 Compare the neck/headstock particularly - if it turns out the semi has a zero-fret, squared fretboard corners & plastic laminate overlay on the head - that's a positive comparison. Still won't tell us what it actually is - but it's a good start as clues go. Jon.
There's definitely a zero-fret there.
 4. I'm thinking about getting my gear covered against theft, breakdown etc. and I want to know what my options are. I'm currently looking at the Musicguard website and for the total amount of my gear (£1200-ish) I'm looking at £6.59 a month via Direct Debit, or £70 in one go. Clearly at that price it's pretty much a no-brainer, and that's including my gear being covered away from the 'insured location' (my house), in-vehicle and breakdown cover. Does anyone else use Musicguard, or what alternatives are there?

 6.
I do.... (and thank you!) and No, its not a Gothic thing.... it just looks right on light wood.... Dontcha think?
Nope, I think it looks right on the right wood. It works for the Blazer, I don't think any other colour would look good on it, but my general pecking order for hardware is: -Chrome -Black -Gold (bleurgh!) Although it's entirely subjective. As tacky as I think it looks, certain occasions call for gold hardware. Squier did a really nice trans red 5 string P as part of the Pro Tone series, with a white pearl scratchplate and gold hardware. That was ball-drainingly sexy.

 8.
o yeah, and i'd said it on the page before lol. i think he's quite good, he puts a lot of small fills and moves around a lot, even if it is just moving around on the major and pentatonic scales, its more than most in that genre do. i think hes undderated because everyone thinks he just follows roots like all punk bassists, but he really doesnt.
I dunno, he's pretty typical of most pop punk bassists. Pretty much all of them played in the same style using the major and pentatonic scales, it's all dead simle and not very inspired. I dug out my Drive Thru Records box set the other day, it's got NFG, The Starting Line and The Movielife EPs in it and all the bass playing is more or less the same.
 9.
Not with Operation Ivy he didn't, nor here. Though I admit the internet often lies like a bitch. And Freeman is jolly good whatever.
My info comes from seeing him live and also from an interview he did in a Total Guitar Bass Special. I think he did use a pick early on and progressed onto finger style. Definitely now he's pretty much just fingers, Maxwell Murder solo and all.
 10. I found the MAG to be a more modern sound than the ABM, and the MAG has a more cutting sound as well. The OD pedal I was using when I gigged with a MAG head was more suitable than when I've used it with my ABM. Definitely agree with the ABM being more vintage sounding, but I reckon the MAG is more versatile. Sadly the MAG looks rubbish. I'm tempted to get a MAG head as well as my ABM and stack them so I can swap about whenever I want, especially if you can pick them up for £100 or so. Also, Ashdown's customer service is brilliant.
 11. No problem. I bought a wiring kit for a Strat from them but I think that was to ambitious for my first attempt at wiring, so I decided to try again with an H/H/3 way switch config. to see if it's any easier. Single conductor wire humbuckers are the way forward!
 12. They do have complete wiring kits for a P Bass. Here. Just scroll down til you find it (about half way)
 13.
Ultimately its up to Kev how much he sells it for. Unless he has broken some sort of agreement that he shouldnt buy somethng and then move it on (which I doubt very much would stand scrutiny of lawyer) then its his to do with as he wishes. Its not up to others to judge if he's right or wrong to do it. ANYTHING is only worth what someone id prepared to pay for it, if he can get more then good luck to him but please stop flaming him for trying.
No flaming here, just a bit of "constructive criticism"
 14.
my definition of a Bass Snob would be someone who when the chips are down and he's broken his bass and hasn't got a spare would refuse my offer of a Squier VMJ... or would insist on putting masking tape over the logo...
+1
 15.
...other than those already mentioned: Kim Deal, and Kim Gordon.
Whilst I love Pixies and the Youth, I've never really rated either Kims as great players. Solid and tasteful, and some great lines, but not technically great. I don't know, I'm torn. I have though been considering the idea that if you want a great alt-rock band, get a girl called Kim on bass
 16. To be fair, Iceni aren't a well known brand, and not a lot of people would be looking for them. Also most folks on ebay are out looking for a bargain, so a lot of people would've seen it, not known what it was and not bid on it. Fender is a well known brand and a lot of people would bid for the fact it has Fender across the headstock. If it was started at £100 or so (or even 99p as Jon suggests) it would make £500 easily, £100 more than you paid for it.
 17.
Tina Weymouth
Good call!
 18.
I don't expect anyone to be impressed....
+1 I don't think anyone has a list of gear in their sig to impress anyone (although that might be the case for some people), but mainly because others find it interesting. I know I do, and I have a list of gear in my sig on the off chance that other people are interested, and if you take a look at it, it's not very impressive at all.
 19. If you really begrudge paying £18, you could try Highly Strung. About half way down they have Precision scratchplates starting at £11. They're made by Venom, and look a bit cheap close up, especially the packaging, but they're alright. I think they're made to fit MIM Fenders, I got one for my Jazz and I know others on here have too and the screw holes line up but there's a fair old gap between the scratchplate and the control plate on mine.
 20.
I checked that site the other day actually, but I just thought it was expensive, I mean, £18 for a black SP? then posting, hummm, seams a lot of a piece of plastic. its £10 just for the plastic which I also thinks quite expensive for what it is. Might wait around and see if anyones selling a 2nd hand one or if i get bored at the guitard shop this weekend I might pick one up if they have one in.
£18 for a black scratchplate is a good price. It'll be 3 bits of plastic laminated together, and cut to shape. Postage is free from Axes'r'us, like neepheid said. At the end of the day, you're not just paying for a piece of plastic, you're paying for the skills that are needed to make the scratchplate as well as the tools too. If you think £18 is too much, I suggest you buy the pickguard blank and try making it yourself, then see if you think £18 is too much.
 21.
dunno if anyone else or i've already said this i've only read to page 6, but who's the guy who plays for rancid? he's great. also ben osmundson of zebrahead, and ian gushka of new found glory can both be quite good. i never hear anyone mention any of these guys, i think they deserve a little more recognition than they get.
Matt Freeman from Rancid was mentioned way back. But he's actually brilliant. Maxwell Murder's a 'must hear' track, phenomenal solo. He only plays finger-style too.
 22. Very nice Burpster, another top job! You certainly have a penchant for black hardware don'cha?
 23. That big bit of plastic he stuck on the forearm chamfer can't be anything but uncomfortable. I like the pickup combo though. If you could get it cheap it could be an interesting project.
