1. More pictures folks, they wouldn't all fit in the first post! Scratch in the finish: Hairline crack: The white scratchplate has aged nicely, but as you can see, it's still white under the knobs: The bass will be shipped in this case. Stickers can be removed (or kept) if you want:
2. Hi all! My flatmate and I foolishly didn't pay Council Tax last year after we finished uni, so I need to make up some cash sharpish. Sadly, that means I'll had to move on my P-Bass. Standard Mexican affair, I picked this up off ebay last year. The serial No. puts it as a 2000 model, and the poor thing looked like the previous owner hadn't a clue about bass care. It was dirty, the strings I don't think had been changed and the action was terrible, but she's in pretty good nick now. There's a few things I've changed on it. Firstly, I swapped the original Strat-style knobs for a couple of metal barrel types. The nut has been replaced with a Tusq nut in place of the original plastic one. I've put a set of Dunlop Straploks on it, and I'll include the Ernie Ball strap with the bass as it has the the other end of the locks on it. The bridge has been replaced with the bridge that was originally on my Jazz. The Jazz is a later model and the bridge is a bit thicker than the original Precision one. I've cleaned the whole thing up, and recently cleaned all the wee metal parts with Methylated spirits, and sanded down the back of the neck with 600 grit wet and dry paper to get rid of the sticky finish on it. Now, as it's knocking on 9 years old, there are a couple of dings, but nothing major and I've included them in the pics where possible. They are: a tiny ding on the back of the neck, behind the 1st fret a 1" scratch between the bridge and the knobs (I couldn't get a pic of this one) another on the bottom bout of the bass which faces the floor a little dent on between the forearm contour and the belly chamfer and one last ding on the underside of the headstock. There's a wee bit of "buckle rash" on the back, but not much as it hasn't been used much. Now for the pictures! I used my girlfriend's camera which I've never used before, so I tried my best and can get more if anyone needs them. Some are a little out of focus but are the best I could muster. I'm looking for £200 for this. I have no problem shipping it at the buyers expense. The bass was shipped in its case to me and is pretty sturdy if not a bit basic. Apologies for such a huge thread but I feel when you're dealing with stuff like this it's best to be honest and open about everything so everyone's happy. I have a couple of extra P Bass bits. I was planning on keeping hold of them as I plan on replacing it when I can afford to again, but if the buyer wanted to they could have a black P bass scratchplate for another £10, a Seymour Duncan SPB-2 (new, unused and in its box) for £40, a Gotoh 201 bridge for £15 and [s]a Badass II for £40 (but I'd rather keep that, hence the high price).[/s] These bits are also available seperately if anyone is interested. PM me if you're interested or with offers, I'll try and get back to you ASAP. Cheers for looking guys!
3.
Windowlene spray, to get the crap off, then Autoglym paint restorer, to remove any surface scratches.
Does the Autoglym work then? I was looking at something similar the other day in Halfords, I forget what, but it said it was an abrasive, and I'd be too scared to use it in case it makes matters worse, but there's a little bit of buckle rash on the back of my Precision that I want rid of.
4.
The Strat style knobs were on the late 90's and early 00's Jazzes I know that much. To be honest i've never seen a Precision with strat style knobs..
Mine is a 2000 model that I bought about 8 months ago, and that had Strat knobs that were swiftly changed.
5. I had the neck pickup of my Jazz replaced with a Duncan SJB-3 and it does the same thing. For the purposes of ease of use, when I put new knobs on, I turned them both up full then made sure screws faced the same way (making sense?). I've found that it's not when the volumes are full, but when they're both in the same position that the volume almost completely drops out and as a result sounds really thin. Someone suggested that they could have been wired in series, but I just make sure one pickup is up more than the other.
6.
Metal's a big part of my background & musical taste, & is a significant influence on my band - but I wouldn't define myself as a metal bassist. Funny, that. Jon.
+1 on that. My band plays more blues and 'Classic Rock' inspired stuff, but our synth/keys player is into his prog-metal like Tool and Isis, whilst I like more brutal stuff. Anyone else like Converge on here? That said, I'll give pretty much anything a shot, but Dan Carter's Rock Show and Mike Davies' Punk Show on a Monday night is pretty much my cup of tea, as opposed to the stuff played on Radio 1 during the day. 12-4am on a Monday night is where it's at!
7.
i cant show you but i can tell. (COMPS IS TOOOOO OLD). squire p bass white. well thats about it sounds gay ey? to bad its not.. IT POWNS
What does 'powns' mean? I've seen a few folk using the term but can't think what it could mean. Is it some kind of moronic TXT SPK?
8.
If it's any help, Gordon Moakes uses Ashdown ABM amps, and you might be able to see his settings in this picture: Edit: He's got the input at about 10 o'clock, bass boosted very slightly (less than 1 o'clock), mids boosted to about 2 o'clock, treble at 1 o'clock, valve drive at 2 o'clock, the compression knob appears to have fallen off, but it looks like he's marked it as being off anyway, valve drive at nearly 3 o'clock and subharmonics at nearly 3 o'clock. So, yeah... a frown shape. I'm not sure what the box is on top of the amp.
His EQ is almost exactly the same as mine, right down to the amount of Valve Drive, it's startling. But if he's using a Mexican bass (again, like me) then he's probably doing what I do and keep the sound bassy enough without it turning to mud.
9. Major GAS! I was sold on that 50's style P, but having seen that Sonic Blue 60's style I'm torn! Definitely some Gassing in the near future!
10. I'd like my Peavey Foundation back. That was my first bass and wasn't anything special but it was pretty solid. I'd want it more for nostalgia than anything else. I really wish I still had my salmon pink Danelectro U2. Got it for £60, sold it for the same and the guy I sold it to moved away. I'd love to have that one back in my possession. I'm going to have to move on my Precision soon too, but it's only a Mexican one and I can pick up another easily enough.
11. This is definitely the Playboy of Bass Porn. Very nice! Although I disagree on your misguided views on black block maple necks!
12. My mum sent me a copy of the album a while ago thinking I'd like it. She wasn't wrong either. It took me a few listens but it's pretty similar to a lot of the music my folks listened to when I was growing up, very reggae/African influenced (think Paul Simon's Graceland and later Talking Heads). The bass line itself is pretty similar to a Bouncing Souls line, the chords are A G and D if that helps?
13. Good Lord! That's really nice, not totally sold on the colour but it would go nicely with my green Jazz methinks! Shame I'm not in the position to be buying basses, actually the complete opposite just now That's really nice though. I'm already planning the mods in my head Bridge looks to be more like a Gotoh than a Badass, albeit a bit longer than the likes of the 201 or 203. Not complaining mind, I never really got on board with the Badass looks, and the Gotoh is more than good enough for about half the price I reckon. Edit: Gas list updated! Hopefully there's not a load of unsightly routing under the scratchplate, would be nice to hoik it off and let every bask in the glory of the LP blue! Oh yeah, decided I love the colour now
14. That red P bass looks mighty familiar!
15. I love the Precision sound, it's so wonderfully 'thumpy'. I took the Duncan pickup out of my bass last night and put the original cheapy Fender one back in and it still sounds great, I think it was my old amp that was the problem that led me to replace it. Sadly I think I'm going to have to sell it Just found out the other day that I owe £600 in council tax so it may have to go. I can survive with just a Jazz, right? Actually, now I mention it, it's the P sound and the simplicity I love, but looks-wise it's the Jazz for me. My ideal bass would be a cross between the two, like the Mark Hoppus sig, but with a less sinfully ugly scratchplate.
16. I agree that there's not much of a grain to the new body, but I like it! Because of the white scratchplate and pickup cover, I'd be tempted to paint it white if you were going to do it at all. Agree with OldGit too, Gotoh replacement bridges are really good and look a lot nicer than Badass bridges. You might need a neck shim though. I did, but it's a piece of piss to do.
17. Sold to Jobiebass and I've got a new pickup on its way!
18.
+1 Mine was "what's that???"
Gollum? My precioussssssss
19. As per the title, I've got a Duncan Quarter Pounder for P-Bass that I'm looking to trade, it's not the sound I'm after and for me the output is too high. Ideally I'd be looking for an SPB-2 or something similar. Drop me a PM if you're interested, I don't get online as much as I'd like anymore but I'll try and get back to you ASAP. Mint condish, and I'll try and get a piccy up if people want me to. Oddly, I have a 1/4 pounder in my Jazz that sound lovely, don't know why the P version is so hot. Cheers Jono
20. Any idea what model it's intended for?
21. I can't get on the site either. I thought it was to do with the wireless server in the coffee place I'm in but apparently not. I remember the thread about the green-burst Jazz a month or so ago, and that was a hideous beast.
22. After all this talk of how great SX basses and their siblings (Jim Deacons and those no name ones) are, I've been considering flogging my Mexican P and using the money to fund one an SX or similar. My Fender is ok, but it's the mods that I've put on myself that make it, it was pretty crap when it was bog standard. I'd take the Duncan pickup out and take the Badass off it before I sold it and whack them on the new bass. My thinking is that I could sell the bass on ebay for, say, £175, buy a new bass for about £100 and then have £75 towards a new guitar amp (Epiphone valve Jr head for £100). Would I be buying an inferior bass and making a mistake, or do they really live up to the hype? I'd probably get one of the "no name" P copies from Curly Music in Liverpool, I prefer the headstock and like the lack of a logo. Any guidance from the SX collective would be great. Cheers Jono
23. Your boys eh? I think of my basses as girls (if I have to). I'd feel uncomfortable about being strapped to a man. Love the Highway 1 P tho.
