New Squier VMP TB vs used Fender (Mexican) Precision
Jono Bolton replied to solo4652's topic in Bass Guitars
I was considering getting either a second hand P Bass or one of the new Squiers, but for an extra £100 you could pick up a second-hand Highway 1 P or J, which seems like a better idea IMO. -
I love it! Although, ''these is no reserve for this item''?

Peavey Foundation was mine, red with a maple neck. I bought it off a guy a school on my 14th birthday. It was a good bass actually, nice sound IIRC. I sold it to my brother's friend who promptly butchered it. I think he was going to cover it in some fluffy material but whether or not that actually happened I hope to never find out

I reckon it doesn't. I know the original ABMs were badged as Ashdown Bass Magnifiers but this isn't one of them. Anyway, I contacted the seller to let him know but he says he can definitely see some sort of valve in there. Can anyone shed some light on it? Also, it's missing the front grill

I use MusicGuard as well, I think it's about £7.60 a month for my (roughly) £1500's worth of bass gear, but that'll be reduced in a couple of days when I remove my P Bass from the list. At a price like that I reckon it's pretty much a no-brainer, and it's covered if it gets nicked or damaged, and I'm covered if someone gets hurt at a gig as a result of my gear.

Where's the correct place fora thumb rest on a Jazz?
Jono Bolton replied to Jono Bolton's topic in Bass Guitars
That's true, it'll be completely pointless, but I reckon it completes the look really. Reckon it's gonna between the neck and the pickup if I take the plunge and get one. It does mean drilling the bass though -

Yep, I initially passed over it because the layout isn't the best but they have everything you could ever want, the prices are great and the customer service is impeccable! I don't go anywhere else now for bits and bobs, unless it's something hard to find, in which case it's usually something that WD or Allparts can order in. -
Hi all. [s] I've bits and pieces that I don't need anymore. First is a new and unused Seymour Duncan SPB-2 for P Bass. I bought it for my P Bass but had to sell it just after it arrived so never even got round to opening the box! I paid about £42 for it, then got stung with a £15 customs fee from FedEx. Yours for £42, or I'll trade you for a decent Jazz Bass bridge pickup.[/s] Next is a set of 3 flat top, chrome barrel knobs. I put them on my Jazz a couple of months ago but decided I want to put traditional Jazz Bass knobs back on it. Cost me £8.10 ( each) for the set, yours for £6 I also have a couple of original bits from my MIM Jazz. I've got a neck pickup for £12, a bridge pickup for £12 or both for £20, and a bridge for £9. All the MIM bits are in full working order and in very good condition. All prices include postage![s][/s]
Only a suggestion, but why don't you just stick your thumb on either of the pickup covers?
Because I don't plan on using it, but I like the way they look. I mainly use a pick to play, so it's just a cosmetics thing. -

I fancy putting a thumb rest on my Jazz but can't decide where it should go. It's purely for cosmetic reasons, but I don't know where to put it. I'm fairly certain I don't want a "tug bar" i.e under the strings. Can anyone post some pictures of their Jazz's or something? It's either going to go between the neck pickup and the neck, or above the neck pickup, these seem to be the accepted positions for thumb rests. Cheers guys!

I'm lucky, my MIM Jazz was an 18th birthday pressie a few years ago so I feel obliged to keep hold of it, but I lucked out and got an absolute belter! Very good quality and well put together, even if it's not the colour I wanted. I only had a wee issue with the neck pocket, but it's no biggie. Anyway, so far I've stuck a Seymour Duncan SJB-3 in the neck and put a Badass II on it at a total cost of about £70. I'll probably stick another pickup in the bridge at some point, but that means for just over £100 or so, I've made an already good bass better, and since I'd never sell it for sentimental reasons, I'm glad I'm "stuck" with a good bass as opposed to a pig. I think with Mexican basses the QC is pretty hit and miss, and some folk'll find a belter and some folk'll find firewood. I reckon modding a Mexican Fender is a good project, but it's worthwhile taking the time to find a decent starting point, not just grabbing the first one that turns up on ebay.

Fender Standard Jazz Bass® (Upgrade) Bass Guitar,
Jono Bolton replied to aceuggy's topic in Bass Guitars
I've been trying to find out what the "upgrades" were and when they started. I have a MIM Standard Jazz 5 of 1999/2000 vintage and the pickups are very weak. From the positive comments I guess the more recent ones have fixed that.
I've got a MIM Precision from the same year (2000) and The pickup is the complete opposite, it's really meaty and very high output. The pickups on my Jazz were pretty weak, I've replaced the neck pickup and now I've got a nice blend between the 2. -

That's really nice ritch! Was it a pricey job, if you don't mind me asking? Would it not have been cheaper to buy a similar neck from, say, Allparts or WD?
