First GAS was an American Standard P Bass I bought from Clarky off here. Arrived yesterday, as did a new Dimarzio strap, which was lucky.

I bought Clarky's MIA P Bass from him. Spoke to him last Thursday, put cash in his account on Friday, on Saturday he arranged a pickup for Monday and it was delivered on Tuesday. Absolutely seamless! Bass arrived well packed and exaclty as described. Wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again or recommend him a seller, wonderful chap!

Squier 60's Classic Vibe P Bass v Fender Highway 1.
Jono Bolton replied to aceuggy's topic in Bass Guitars
A used HW1 won´t cost much more than a new Squier and will be a noticeably better bass, as will be a MIJ or CIJ. If you don´t mind a maple fretboard, the MIM 50´s Classic P is excellent for the money as well.
+1 I tried the 50s Classic P Bass the other day when I was shopping for a new P Bass and it was the best of all the basses I tried that day, but that's my opinion. I also tried a Highway 1 and a 60s Vibe Squier and I would say the difference between the two is night and day really. As good as every says the Squier's are, the Highway 1 in my opion was the superior instrument, and by a good deal too. The sound was better, the construction was a better standard, and I much prefer the finish on the Highway 1, the Squier's felt quite cheap and was pretty thickly applied. -
What is it with trying to find a decent music shop?
Jono Bolton replied to markdavid's topic in General Discussion
I went bass shopping last weekend, and the main problem I had was with service. One store took ages before actually getting round to letting try a few things, none of which hadn't been within a mile of an Allen key, and in another the sales guy's respone to 'Can I please try that Highway 1 Precision?' was 'Yeah, uh, sure. Do want an American one or a Mexican one?' I left shortly after he plugged me into a 25W Laney combo. Top marks to the guy from Reverb (formerly Sound Control) for letting try the bass I wanted, as well as offering to let me try out a few others and giving a few sound recommendations, letting me use an Ashdown ABM 210 combo similar to the rig I currently use, and offering to do me a deal on the P I had initially gone in to try. Sadly, they only had it in red and said that they wouldn't get a black one in for a while, so the guy pointed me in the direction of an online store where I would save £80 on his price! Probably not the best idea if you're running a business but I genuinely felt guilty for not buying something from such a great sales guy. -
I was trying new Precisions at the weekend and in one store I was told that these were to be a replacement for the Highway 1, so I took it to mean that they were MIA. Can't understand why they would get rid of the Highway 1s though, I tried a few on Saturday and they were all excellent.

Squier - names of their ranges and quality ?
Jono Bolton replied to BigBeatNut's topic in Bass Guitars
I tried the Classic Vibe 60s P bass at the weekend, and it was a dog. To be honest though, I reckon it was just a bad one, but there were no other places in Glasgow that had one I could compare it to. I've got a Squier Standard Strat that I've had for 6-and-a-bit years now, and it's the best playing Strat I've ever come across. As Kev said, you'll need to try a few to find one that's right -
i've heard that from a number of sources, i think i'll be going with that! how hard is it to install new pickups?
It's simple if you know your way around a soldering iron. It's basically a case of disconnecting 2 wires per pickup, and reconnecting the corresponding 2 wires on the new pickup. Watch with the MIM Jazz pickups though, the bridge pickup and neck pickups are usually the same size, which means when you buy a replacement pair, they'll probably give you a larger one to put in the bridge which will go in, but it'll be a tight fit and may require some sanding. In my experience at least, although I know there are some others on here who've had the same issue.

What was the gear outcome of 2008 for you?
Jono Bolton replied to JimBobTTD's topic in General Discussion
IN Ashdown ABM 210 T cab Behringer Vintage Phaser OUT Fender Precision Ashdown MAG 410T Behringer Vintage Phaser Boss ODB-3 Squier Telecaster Custom I had a few money-related "issues" this year so I had to offload a few things, and also downsize my amp to find space for it in the flat I moved into in September, but for the first time in ages I'm making decent money and have actually got my arse in gear to set some aside so I can buy a new Precision in a couple of weeks time. My list has been "narrowed down" to 3-4, so I'm heading into Glasgow city centre on Saturday to try before I buy. -
The bassist from the Feeling plays one as well I believe?
Yep. He also gets to nail Sophie Ellis-Bexter too, the jammy bastard
On the Japanese version - I've played one and it was really good - I've not seen one in blue however, and didn't know they were available.
I found this body on ebay, which started the juices flowing. Oh, JLP, lovely work there! I'm usually a fan of brown tortoise-shell on a white bass, such as a P or Jazz, but it looks wrong on the Mustang, the white pearl looks much better.
The fella from (not very) Good Charlotte has a bass clef tattoo'd behind one of his ears, nearly put me off getting mine done. I don't think small tatt's that are visible but tucked away look bad, but that nasty, chavvy trend of innitials on the side of the neck is a bit rank. Just shows a completly blind willingness to follow a trend - ANY trend. A friend of mine has a couple of stars behind her ear and that looks ok, but she's got plenty of other tatt's and piercings to distract you from it anyways! 'Scuse the blood, she sent me this when it was brand spankin'!
There was a guy in the paper the other week who'd robbed a police car, not realising there was a video camera in the back. It didn't take the police long to catch him because upon viewing the tape they found they had a pretty good shot of not just his face, but also the tattoo on his neck of his surname and date of birth

I recently bought a set of Prosteels (55-105 methinks), and I'm another convert. Lovely zing and better sustain than the nickels I had been using previously. I don't like the coloured ball ends though, I know it's supposed to help you identify which string it is but really, how inexperienced do you have to be to not be able to order stings by thickness without the need for individually coloured ball ends? It looks so sh*t, I'll need to get a bass with through body stringing to hide them.
this kind of shady activity really pisses me off! gives us up here a bad name! there is decent poster here from, Aberdeen, Ayr, Dundee, Dunfermline, Edinburgh, Glasgow etc. in future folks if you buy anything up here maybe worth getting in touch to see if any of us can pick-up, check or even contact the seller. andy
Seconded.

I'd agree with axesrus, they offer great service. I would give them an email first and explain what you're after, they'll probably be able to send you out a set with 2 volumes and a tone, which would save you having to buy two sets. Alternatively, buy a set of 2 volume knobs, and I'll you a matching black tone knob for free, I believe I have one spare.
-
My vote goes for brown (not red, and I really can't stress that enough) tortoise shell. Easily the best match for a 3 tone sunburst, IMO, of course
you'll have to order one from Japan for a decent colour; I agree red and white aren't the best selection
Nuts, I was hoping that wasn't the case. Where can I order one from?
-
Does anyone know if the Japanese re-issues are still available in blue? I've been doing some scouting about online because I'm looking to try one when I expand my collection at the start of next year, but I can only find the Fiesta Red and Vintage White, both of which don't really cut it for me. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I've been trying to work out most of Glassjaw's 'Worship and Tribute' by ear for the last couple of weeks.

What a beauty! I've been gassing over one of these for a while, and the sound would suit the new band I'm standing in for at the mo, and this listing is doing feck all to help! If I didn't need to pay out a similar amount of cash next week for Council Tax I'd be all over this. I bet when I have the cash together to put in a bid in a couple of weeks, there'll be nothing going
Basically it was crushed sufficiently hard to punch the tone control through into the cavity: I have all the little fragments of the original so I'm going to attempt a bit of scratchplate jigsaw, just to keep it original. That said, the tort's a good fit and way better looking. The scary screw ends are a bit of an issue when playing with a pick & doing palm-edge muting, which I do occasionally, but I think shorter screws and/or a shim in the neck pocket will be the way forward. A cover would interfere with pick style playing (well, my hamfisted bludgeoning) and also I'd have to drill the body, which I don't want to do. Interesting detail - SQ Squiers had scratchplates drilled for a pup cover, but no holes in the body. J.
So was the bass in a hard case and they still managed to do that much damage? Royal Mail never cease to amaze me with the ways they come up with to break stuff. By the way, to you loan out your carpets to porn shoots?

I voted sunburst, but I'm also partial to black or white, although my Jazz is 'Sage Green'. It's okay, but I have to say, I'm a fan of more 'traditional' colours, although anything that's Sonic Blue does funny things to me

Bloody hell Jon, that's a belter! You want to get a bridge cover on there though, those saddles look like they'd give you knuckles a proper shredding. How did Royal Fail wreck the w/b/w scratchplate, by the way?
