Mighty Mite Replacement Necks
Jono Bolton replied to matt_citizenbass's topic in Repairs and Technical
Have a look at this thread, and also the one that's linked in the last post too, lots of info about Mighty Mite necks and ordering them too. I've got one on my Jazz and it's brilliant, can't recommend them enough. EDIT: Also, Mighty Mite necks are licensed by Fender so should fit the majority of Fender bodies no problem. That said, I had to have a wee bit of the neck pocket of my Jazz routed to allow the neck to fit. -
I'll echo the sentiments of Muzz and 211dave112, I've got a Mighty Mite neck on my Marcus Miller Jazz and it's brilliant, the finish is so thin it means it's a dream to play! There were a couple of rough fret ends but they've calmed down over time. I love playing it, it's easily the nicest neck I've played, including the 09 American Standard P I used to have, and over the last few months it's really worn in nicely. Same as Muzz, it cost less than £80. I'm looking at putting together a P Bass in the new year and I'll definitely use Mighty Mite again. If you have a look at this thread here, Happy Jack's ordered a neck direct from Mighty Mite with no problem at all with regards to duty and tax.
I'd say "mitigates" rather than "sorts"
+1 I'd also say that the finish could probably be a bit thinner too. I wouldn't mind a nice 'worn' cherry finish instead of the gloss one on it just now.

I've got an EB-3 that I picked up new at the start of the year for £160 in a New Year/closing down sale. It rarely gets uses because of the neck dive, but the neck's nice to play, and has a nice acoustic sound if not an amplified one IMO. I would sell it and use the funds to put towards a P Bass but my girlfriend wont let me because it's too pretty

I've got a Mighty Mite neck that on my Jazz that I bought off ebay about this time last year. There was a seller in the uk that for a few months had a selection rosewood and maple J and P necks, I picked up a maple J number for £78 if I remember rightly. I haven't seen them for a while though. They're licensed by Fender but the seller said in his listing that some Squier bodies are thinner than Fender models which can lead to problems fitting the neck, but I think that tends to be on the lower end Squiers. The necks are brilliant though, much better than the expensive Allparts number I had before!
Not Fender obviously, but black, shiny and in near perfect condition, pretty much unmarked. Includes 3 ply scratch plate. Seems it had another plate on at some time as there are some extra holes, but all are hidden when the supplied plate is fitted. Includes all screws for the scratch plate. The swirls and streaks are just my poor polishing, this is almost mint. £55 Shipping £5
Have you any details on this? What brand is it, what is it made of, is it solid wood or ply? It looks mint, have been meaning to put together a P Bass project for a while.

This is one for those who play guitar as well as bass. I've recently bought an Epiphone G400 for a very reasonable £80. The seller had upgraded the neck pickup to a Gibson and stuck a set of Grover Machineheads on it too. However, the Grovers are awful, I need to retune every 15 minutes or so. It could also do with a decent set up, but while the strings are off I want to get shot of the awful tuners that are on it just now. Does anyone have any recommendations for new keys that would give rock solid tuning stability for Gibson-style guitars?

Does anyone know where I can can get good quality replacement screws for a set of machine heads? I've got Hipshot HB-2s and the metal for the screws is so soft that the cross head has basically stripped away. I know I've seen people on here who've swapped the stock screws for some better replacements, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Tape at the minute seems to be the best solution just now, I don't have the tools or know-how to plug and re-drill the holes. If it doesn't work I can always take it to the shop to get it done professionally, it could do with a new nut anyway.
Snug fit, you may want to take them out again at some stage.
Good point, I'll give that a go when I restring my bass.
-
Would you wrap the tape around and then glue it in, or would you just add enough tape so that it's a snug fit?
-
I've got a set of Hipshot HB-2s but the press-in bushings are too small for the holes in the headstock by about a millimetre or so. What would be the best way of fixing in the bushings? I've previously tried glueing them in but the tension of the string on the tuner post has caused a couple of them to start pulling out.

I had an American Fender P that I bought second hand in mint condition from a fellow Basschatter, but it seldom got played as I was too worried about it getting dings. While it's nice to have new gear, I would rather have *slightly* used gear, a few bumps and scratches are no problem for me. I usually find that as used basses have been played in they're more comfortable to play. A big no to relicing for me though, I don't see the point.

I have a Jazz with a set of La Bella Deep Talkin' Flats that I had set up in standard tuning, which I detuned to Eb a few months ago, and I've had no trouble at all with the action or the truss rod. If you're having problems I would think it might be to do with the strings you're using, maybe you need a higher tension string?

Garrett Tierney of Brand New, particularly on the last two albums. Usually just a P Bass through an Ampeg SVT but he manages to get a huge range of tones from it. Nate Newton from Converge has a pretty great sound too, there's a reason why a Fender P/SVT combo is pretty much a standard in rock music.

I sold a Fender 09 American Std P Bass because I didn't play it, it was absolutely mint and I was too worried about scratching or damaging it, stupid really. I used the funds to buy my Marcus Miller and a WD neck, which was sh*te. I've since put a Mighty Mite neck on and I love it. If I'd waited a week though I could've had a 70s Classic Jazz in sunburst off here for only £400, I was offered first dibs on it. Suffice to say, the MM body, 2 necks and the cost of having 2 necks fitted was significantly more than £400, but after all that I wish I'd kept the Precision I also once traded an Epiphone Gold Top worth £500+ for a Squier Tele worth less than £200. Gutted. Oh, and my MIM Jazz is sage green, because it was the only one they had in the shop and I was too impatient to wait 3 days for them to order in a black one.
Brass didn't make much, if any difference to the standard plastic job fitted to my Precision - it's also easy to forget if it did make a difference it would only be on the open strings. (Hope I'm not sounding too condescending).
Not at all, it's a good point, something I hadn't thought of. I would say though that the Tusq nut I've got on my basses have made a noticable difference over the bog standard plastic ones I've had previously, I found that the notes tended to die quite quickly. I'm mostly curious to find out if brass would make enough of a difference to justify the money.
Can anyone comment on the quality of MIMs in 2002/03 in general, I may buy one blind
I had a 2000 MIM Precision that I picked up on ebay for £200 a couple of years back. It was pretty well made, nice and light, but the hardware/pickups were a bit rubbish, they went quite quickly. I bought that blind, and I can't imagine the quality would be that different to an 02/03 model. That said, QC at Fender Mexico wasn't too tight back then, so there's some decent instruments around from that period, but some shockers as well, but they're generally few and far between.
They're just generic ones, they came with some Duncan Designed pups which were out of a VM Jazz, had them on the Aria for a bit. Bridge is 94mm long, neck is 91mm long. They're for double pole-piece pickups btw
Cheers for that, I've got a set of Wizard 64s in my Jazz just now, will measure them when I get home to check if they'll fit and get back to you. They should do, but I seem to remember having some hassle fitting one of the pickups when I got them. I take it they're blank? Duncan Designed pickups sometimes have writing on the cases

Hi I'm thinking about having a brass nut fitted to my Marcus Miller to increase the sustain. It already has a Badass bridge on it, but I'm looking to fit a brass nut to really get it ringing. I'm currently using a Graphtech Tusq nut on it which isn't bad for only six quid, but would it be worth the expense of having a brass nut made and fitted? The tech I normally go to charges £45 for a new brass nut. Would a brass nut be a significant enough improvement to justify the outlay? I use D'addario Prosteels strings as they're the brightest sounding strings I've found, so I don't think a change of strings would be enough. Has anyone else had a brass nut fitted, and what are their experiences? Cheers Jono
