1.
There are a number of things about my individual pedals that I like: I like that they are handmade by enthusiasts I like that they are analogue I like that they look cool and have cool names I like the way you can swap pedals out and experiment Oh, and I like the way they sound. I may well like how a multi unit sounds too, but it won't tick any of the above boxes
I think you've summed that up perfectly. For me it's always been about individual pedals.
2. Based on the performance I saw last week, some of those comments about Jerry Barnes seem a little bit harsh . Amongst the smooth Bernard-like bass grooves, I thought he brought an extra bit of funk to the party (and there's nothing wrong with that). He's always going to be up against it when replacing a legend like Bernard Edwards. If I could play anywhere near a third of his ability, I'd er,...well, ... I'd give up my day job! . I do appreciate the point about them sounding like a Chic covers band, I mean they 'covered' a lot of songs by other artists that Nile wrote/produced. Also, given that they formed in 1976, line-ups are undoubtedly going to change a lot over time, however, IMHO the current line-up is one of the tightest bands I've ever seen play live.
3. ....All I can say is wow. First time I've been to see Chic live, they were fantastic. Very tight band. Jerry Barnes did a storming job playing Bernard Edward's basslines. IndigO2 was mobbed, everyone was up and dancing. I didn't appreciate just how many hits Nile Rodger's has written, as well as all their own stuff, Chic also played impeccable funky versions of songs by Madonna (Like a Virgin), David Bowie (Let's Dance), Diana Ross (I'm Coming Out), Sister Sledge (various), Daft Punk/Pharrell (Get Lucky), ixs (Original Sin), Duran Duran (Notorious), Soup for One segued into Modjo's Lady (Hear Me Tonight), and for the finale Good Times segued into Sugerhill Gang's Rapper's Delight. Only one complaint... it finished too early! (suspect Nile was off to join Pharrell who was playing next door at the O2), Did anyone else on this forum make it to the gig?
4. Have a BUMP from me - I have an Octron1 - IMHO Foxrox make fantastic Octave pedals
5. 2 with a 3rd on the way Washburn Space Bass, Warwick Corvette $$ Ltd edition, and a Warwick Space Bass coming this month. 3 is enough for me.
6. I've seen George and Bootsy and many other funk greats live, but James Brown was the ONE Funk legend that I really wish I'd seen live in concert. He had this raw funk fuelled energy in his live shows (from what I've seen in TV footage & live albums)
7. OMG indeed . What do all the other settings on the pedal do?? This pedal could be a completely ludicrous piece of tosh or a lot of fun - or likely both at the same time.
8.
Satisfy my curiosity; why do you have all 3 chunk pedals? The OS has the exact filter and fuzz circuit built in, doesn't it?
Great question, I've always found the 00Funk settings to be much squelchier than the OS filter. In comparison, the OS can be incredibly tricky to dial in a new sound, unless you've spent time before building patches. I've also used all 50 of my OS presents! The fuzz is definitely the same circuit. Other than that it's more about positioning on the board and pedal combinations, fuzz>filters, filters>fuzz, for example, the Brown Dog into the Talking Machine is very interesting, whilst OS fuzz > Emma Discumbobulator can get really funky.
9.
I currently have an expression pedal off the board for the Xerograph. The board is a PT-1 so I think I might have to bump up to a PT-2 or 3 to fit that on.
Nice board, not a lot of space on there for many more pedals!
10. Wow, I really like this, a very smooth funk jam from Prince. A funky Bootsy-ish effects driven bassline too, what's not to like.
11. I'm glad I found this very helpful thread. I also have the same issue with my PJB Double Four and that same noticeable earthed type hum on my passive Washburn Space Bass. The amp is silent on my Warwick Double $$ and also less noticeable if I play the passive bass via my pedal board into the Double Four. I got in contact with Alan at Synergy at he tells me that the earthed PSU's are still on way but have not shipped to the UK yet. He'll keep me posted when they arrive. Other than the humming issue, which I hope the new PSU will resolve, these really are great little amps.
12. The Chunk Systems Brown Dog Gated Fuzz can get quite synthy, indeed the drive knob even has "fuzzy" to "synthy" settings. Super Freq is right though, you really need an envelope filter directly after the gated fuzz, to get a more smooth electronic synth sound.
13. Here's my very funky pedal board. As you can see I love Chunk pedals, whilst the Prunes & Custard into the DiscumBOBulator gives a lovely warm synthy quack. At this stage I'm finally very happy with it so this might really just be it....famous last words .
14. If you're willing to go a bit more boutique and are happy to buy second hand to meet your budget, then the Way Huge Echo Puss is a great delay pedal, plus for Octaver the Foxrox Octron has the best analogue tracking I've heard to date.
15.
This situation has happened to me and a few mates before. I always pack my bass away as soon as i stop playing it. But our guitarist doesnt bother. It was a jam night and some guy who went up after us (he was in his mid 40s id say), just picked up the guitar. Didnt ask, and didnt say thanks after. Just basic manners really isnt it? Well our guitarist waited for them to finish playing and sit back down. He then walked over to their table and sat down next to the guy who played his guitar, didnt introduce himself, picked up the guys pint and started sipping it slowly. Helped himself to a few pork scratchings, finished the pint, then got up and walked back over. They didnt say a word. We were in stitches. It probably helped that my friend is a big lad. 6ft 3, 18 stone jobby.
Now that is very funny! Probably what I'd do if I had the nerve.
16. Yep, I am officially not in and will likely never be in a band. I love spending time at home (if/when I get time!) learning new grooves, playing solely the music that I want to play, and goofing around with effects. To me personally the end use is being able to completely nail a new tune, but I don't have aspirations to go out and play it to an audience. That said, I completely respect that the majority of people here on BC are going to be in a band and playing to a live audience & that I'm in the minority.
17.
Lovely to see so much great music being celebrated. Music is just the BEST thing
Totally agree, and great to see such a diverse and eclectic mix!

19. Very saddened by this news. Saw Bobby live a couple of years ago when he was in quite poor health. Being the consummate professional, he still managed a great show, and what a fantastic voice. R.I.P. Bobby.
20. Loving the Warwick Bootsy Infinity....you definitely can't fake the funk with that bass! Does it sound as good as it looks?
21. It looks like you've done a pretty good job from those pics. What's the next project - a parquet flooring covered Warwick Thumb?
22.
Thats a formant filter right?
Yes it is -It is great for creating wacky vocal-style talk-box filtered effects. +1 also for the Prunes & Custard & EHX Ravish Sitar. Also, the Chunk Octavius Squeezer can get pretty far out there with some robotic synth type effects.
23. The EHX Talking Machine is a lot of fun on bass.
24. Godlyke, (who are Chunk's US distributor) confirmed that Richard has put production of the pedals on hold pending a re-design or a new analogue multi-effect. Does this mean that the value of the Squeezer's will go through the roof like the Akai Deep Impact?! I love my Squeezer, possibly my favourite pedal on my board. Frustrating initially, (because of the complex interface), but the more time you spend with it the more you realise how great it can be for Synth, Filter, Fuzz, Filter Fuzz and Fuzz Filter. Ironically, the only thing it isn't great at is Octaver!
25. Nice demo. I'm a big fan of the prunes and custard pedal, you can get quite quacky almost envelope filter type tones out of it as well. I use mine in a similar way with my Foxrox octron, some envelope filter(s) and a Russian small stone on a subtle setting.
