1. I can’t believe that there isn’t a thread anywhere on the web with some decent custom settings for the OS. So I’ve had a crack at it, the attached pdf are all my own, bar ‘Screaming Duck’ (which I found on rival talkbass.com – booo, hiss). Not sure how well this will come out as I’ve cut and pasted the settings from my excel document, so if anyone wants this in excel format please pm me and I’ll happily email you the attachment. Would love it if anyone else could publish some custom settings of their own too, so come on all you Chunk OS owners out there! Cheers.

4. Many thanks for the tips guys (and sorry for hijacking the thread). Whacking up the treble and using the settings above and I'm getting some really decent squelch out of the squeezer. It's strange, the 00Funk II still seems a much wetter and less sensitive filter in comparison, but making good progress with the env filter settings on the Squeezer now. Thanks again!
5. Just going back to the Chunk Systems Octavius Squeezer, I agree it's a great pedal but the interface is very complicated and infuriating sometimes. I finally got mine programmed with some great Fuzz and playable Synth tones, but surprisingly I'm really struggling with the Filter only settings. I also have a Chunk Systems Agent 00Funk, but, although the OS is based on the 00Funk circuit, bizarrely I can't get anywhere near that lovely squelchiness out of the OS even on the preset Envelope Filter setting. Anyone who owns an OS know what I'm doing wrong or got any filter settings they could recommend? I'm playing a passive bass and have tried adjusting the global sensitivity VCF sens parameter on the settings menu and adjusting the VCF peak & sweep. I've got VCF mode in ENV mode.
6. I've never seen them live but hear they still put on a great show. As much as I love and grew up with their '80's stuff, I also really got into their earlier 70's straight up funk, which had a nice p-funk style: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1No13toKCW8
7. Got myself some tickets to see Cameo on 19[sup]th[/sup] July Anyone else going to see this? It looks like at least a couple of the original Cameo line-up are appearing: lead singer Larry Blackmon (though he might be a bit long in the tooth for his red cod-piece these-days ) along with Tomi Jenkins. Not 100% sure who’ll be on the bass, but I’m really hoping it’ll be Aaron Mills, who’s a very underrated funk bassist IMHO. Anyway, looking forward to the gig. Here’s hoping these guys have still got it & are not faking the funk.
8. ... a Chunk Systems Octavius Squeezer. I bought one of these off of ebay a couple of months ago, and it's crying out for a PC interface. Having said that hours, no make that weeks worth of patience and trial and error with all the various settings in the interface, and I've finally started to configure some of the synth, filter and fuzz tones that I need. It took me long enough to learn how to save your changes due to hidden parameters and permissions. Anyone else had experience of this pedal? Btw, I'm not slagging the Squeezer off, now I've finally got to grips with it, it is a wonderful and (eventually) very versatile pedal, but, why oh why, does it have to be so complicated !!
9. I’m sure I’ve seen similar posts to this before, and I haven’t posted for a while, but, here’s an alternative list - if you are truly talking ‘virtuoso’ bassists then you simply gotta’ have some Funk in your life: In no particular order (other than Bootsy No.1 J): Bootsy Collins (James Brown/Parliament/Funkadelic/Bootsy’s Rubber Band) Larry Graham (Sly & the Family Stone/Graham Central Station) Aaron Mills (Cameo/Outkast) Mark Adams (Slave) Stuart Zender or Paul Turner (Jamiroquai – Zender just about pips it) Andrew ‘Love’ Levy (Brand New Heavies) Cordell ‘Boogie’ Mosson (Parliament/Funkadelic) George Porter Jr. (The Meters) Rick James (Late showman and very competent bassist) Joseph ‘Lucky’ Scott – Curtis Mayfield – Hardly well known, but he played some of the greatest soul and funk baselines of all time (Move On Up & Freddie’s Dead etc)
10. This is coming from someone who owns a Washburn Space Bass, but that Warwick model is seriously OTT and just a little tacky. Will be interesting to see if Bootsy actually plays it on stage (he usually plays a Traben Bootsy Star thesedays). Ashamed to say I actually stil kinda like the Warwick, it's much better than that other standard shaped signature model they had out, but won't be trading in my Washburn anytime soon.
11. I'm pretty sure Jamiroquai consistently use envelope filters (Stuart Zender in the older albums and I think Paul Turner uses Chunk Systems pedals).
12. Hi - I'm really getting into effects pedals at the moment but struggling to find a great deal of information on what's the best pedal around for getting a synth or moog type sound. The EHX Bass Micro Synth sounds pretty tempting and it looks like you can get a lot of variety out of this pedal, but from reading a couple of reviews it sounds pretty tricky to nail down the exact sound you want. I was wondering if there are other similar or better pedals out there before I make a decision. Would appreciate any experiences you have with this or other synth pedals Any ideas?
13. Other than Curtis Mayfield, if we are going back to 70's funk don't forget Isaac Hayes (Black Moses and The Man! Ultimate Isaac Hayes CDs are both great), or maybe a little Mille Jackson, Blackbyrds, Ohio Players, Slave or moving into the 80's for some smoother basslines; Kleeer (check out Intimate Connection which 2Pac heavily sampled on California Love) or some Loose Ends...
14. The best CD I bought recently was Look Out, Watch Out by Deep Street Soul (funky, retro and soulful). Keeping in the Jamiroquai/ BNH vein how's about some Omar, Maxwell, JTQ (James Taykor Quartet), Roy Ayers, Donald Bryd, Beverley Knight, Raphael Saadiq, plus a bit of the more soulful side of Q-Tip maybe?
15.
And why is the guitarist wearing a nappy?
The guy wearing a nappy is the late Gary Shider aka Star Child aka Diaper Man, a veteran guitarist from Parliament /Funkadelic, & don't ask me why but he usually wore a nappy on stage, probably something to do with the Funk being stinky!! And maybe it's just me but I kinda love that sound from the OP Utube vid.
16. I couldn't really tell you what effects pedal he uses these days, though I think he's pretty keen on Chunk Systems Brown Dog and Agent 00Funk - there's a good & recent U Tube link around with Bootsy practising all the Electro Harmonix pedals. Search for Bootsy Electro Harmonix and you'll find it. If you are looking for a cool video of the man himself check this link out from part of his world tour earlier this year - http://liveweb.arte.tv/fr/video/Bootsy_Col..._Jazz_a_Vienne/ To Daz - Yeah he does still wear silly hats, but as you'll see from the vid the guy has definitely still got his funk chops.
17. In no particular order, here's the guys that made me want to pick up a bass: Bootsy Collins Mark Adams (Slave - incredible & sadly late funk bassist) Larry Graham Stuart Zender (formerly of Jamiroquai) Andrew 'Love' Levy (Brand New Heavies - nice understated bass tones & very underrated IMO)
18. I'm another leftie who plays bass right handed. A left handed bass just didn't feel right to me. It feels more natural using the dexterity I have in my left hand on the fingerboard, plus I could never have found myself a right handed space bass! Also use knife and fork right handed, and occasionally attempt to use a cricket bat right handed, but generally a left hander and footer. Lefties are not cack-handed, just multi-talented
19.
Indeed! Brain, Bucket, and Bill Laswell. But they use loads of guests, Bootsy, Bernie Worrell, and many others. They do all sorts of styles, funk, sludge, hip hop, metal, dub, tenderness, but they always sound like Praxis.
I'm a bit late in replying to this link, but better late than never I guess. I have heard of Praxis but they're a bit too heavy and industrial for me. I quite liked the Zillatron Lord of the Harvest album though in places (Bugg Lite & Fuzz Face are very silly but great tracks & feature some great playing by Bootsy. For me the best Bill Laswell/ P-Funk collaberation is a double album called Funkcronomicon by Axiom Funk. It's quite hard to find, but heavily features George Clinton, Bootsy, Bernie Worrell, Maceo, Booby Bryd, Eddie Hazel and Pedro Bell, Bill Laswell etc - it's well worth checking out.
20. Hi, I'm a (newish) newbie on here too, but have so far found this forum really useful and usually take a look at what's new every day. I signed up to Basschat to help me find a bass, get the right gear, and, as a novice find out more about what great basslines to play and hear more about great bassists, & get some good tips. For me, Basschat does exactly what it says on the tin and it's a great forum. If it is a thread that doesn't interest me, then I stop reading it. There's a wide range of discussions on here and you can't like everything all the time. As for the Off Topic stuff I have to admit I rarely look at this as I use Basschat primarliy as a bass forum, and if I wanted a general chat then I'd join Twitter or the likes... I do agree with several previous posts that the rep system though doesn't really work though. If you disagree with something then surely it's better to reply why you disagree rather than anonymously negatively repping. Some bright anonymous spark will probably give me a negative rep for this now.
21. Welcome too - a big hug right back atcha
22. Cheers for the replies & advice guys, yep I am still loving my bass, & playing it whenever I can.
23. I'm liking their work & almost as good as the real deal. Such a shame we don't have many up and coming new funk bands getting a record deal these deals. All we seem to get is the same old syruppy over-produced R(hythm) & B(ull). That's my rant over for this morning anyway
24. OP here - Yes the avatar is a Washburn Bootsy Collins Space Bass.
25. Great posts - I agree about the 'slooowed' down studio versions sounding better. The JB's Anthology is a cracking double album packed full of Maceo and Fred Wesley The original James Brown 'Funk Power 1970 A Brand New Thang' is a corking album too featuring the original JB's Line-up: Maceo, Fred, Catfish and Bootsy Also worth checking out are the two Fred Wesley LP's - A Toot For Me, A Blow For You and Say Blow by Blow Backwards.
