The Great Double Bass Race - BBC4 TV, 11.30 7th Jan
pete.young posted a topic in EUB and Double Bass
I've just spotted that BBC 4 TV is showing a film called 'The Great Double Bass Race'' at 11.30 pm tonight, 7th January. And hopefully also on iPlayer, it would be about the only thing that isn't if not! This film tells the story of the first double bass festival on the Isle of Man, in 1978, and features Gary Karr amongst others. I remember watching the film when it was first shown and thinking, I've really got to go to the next one. I still haven't been. -
@basso navo wht you say makes perfect sense to me. The question for you is whether a fretless will be edgy and percussive enough for the sound you want to make. If you're thinking of playing slap you're probably going to need a fretted bass. Not saying it's impossible, but there aren't many people doing it, 64 million flies argument I know.

Best octaver pedal for 5 string fretless. Your opinion.

After only 3 hours? Your expectations are unreasonable. And you don't specify whether you're looking for octave up or octave down. I'd say don't buy anything without trying a Boss OC-5 first. -

They look fabulous. Cost is fearsomely expensive. I came across them whilst looking for a Weissenborn, but they are more money than a hand-made solid Koa style 4.

I only have one double bass. If I had two, I couldn't fit them both in the car anyway.

The KZZS10 are more expensive but have more and better drivers, and sound great for bass guitar.

Double bass and accordion midi bass
pete.young replied to Euan Mackie's topic in EUB and Double Bass
As an accordion player (Roland not Midi but the principle is the same) I'd be wondering why I was paying a double bass player that I don't need. Time to find another gig, or take up Midi accordion. -
If this is Parcelforce, don't wait for them to write to you and tell you they're expecting a payment - log it as a support job and they will email you the link. I had this with Ducati spares, it took them 7 days to get around to telling me the items were awaiting customs payment.

Has an old Fender ever been refinished to sunburst? I was under the impression they were always either stripped back to the wood or refinished in a solid colour.

I can't - can I borrow a couple of yours?

Approximately 200 quid to spend frivolously. What are you getting?

Frivolous? That means a guitar, or something not bass-related then. I'd go for one of these. I've no idea how they can produce this for less than 200 quid. https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_custom_line_n_150ce_natural.htm?glp=1&gad_source=1 -
I had a Shadow banjo system for a while and the controller for that was flimsy too. I have had several instruments fitted with various types of KK Sound pickups, and all of them have worked flawlessly wirhout exception. The K&K Definity is apparently discontinued which is a shame because it looks interesting - I guess it didn't perform very well. I'd be inclined to try a K&K Big Twin , either with the sensors attached to the bridge, the same way that they do for the Double Big Twin double bass set up, or with the two sensors under the bridge foot.

Just as well it's in Africa, otherwise I'd be tempted to hunt the seller down and apply a belt sander to , oh use your imaginations!

I wouldn't bother fixing it, all they do is hiss and fizz. The sstock crossover is something like 3.5KHz. I modded mine to bypass it altogether.

I've played for the Harley Riders Club of GB a couple of times at their rally on Mersea Island. I think we got £300 for a 6 piece band, that included a round trip of about 50 miles and setting up our own PA. They're a great crowd , very enthusiastic. At that time I think they did their own organisation. It now looks as though they've outsourced it.

Not sure about the modal bit, but triple C is gCGCC .

If you already have a recorder like a Zoom H4 , you could use that as a kind of mixer. The built-in mikes will pick up ambient sound, the input sockets will take a feed from your bass and an aux out from the desk, and you can plug in a set of ZS10s to the headphone socket.

Sadowsky use different pickup lengths. Some are standard Fender Jazz (100mm neck, 104mm bridge) but many Sadowsky basses use a pair of 95mm length. You need to make sure you get the right set for the RSD. 95mm sets are available from Delano, not sure about other vendors. They come up second-hand on this forum occasionally.

Sorry, I'm a folk musician so all I can do is sing a song about how great the old boiler was.

I think this will be the normal state of affairs for Concert bands, Wind Bands, Brass Bands and amateur orchestras.
