How about this then - a mobile 2nd hand bass shop. With new your always competing against internet sellers on price which is a hiding to nothing because there aren't that many people who will pay more for good service. For most people the 2nd hand market is mainly ebay, which is almost always buying blind. People probably would pay a premium above ebay prices if they got the chance to actually try first. Load up your wagon and off you go. Advertise in advance, hire a venue/hotel etc, you'd only need to visit each region once every couple of months, do it on Saurdays & Sundays when people can actually attend, make an occassion of it. If this sort of show came to town near me every 2 or 3 months I know I'd go along to see what was in and try stuff out and maybe spend a bit of cash. Just an idea, elom
Imagine a place where your look at lots of basses and amps, even try them out and really enjoy playing without any pressure. Also where the staff are friendly and helpfull knowing that if you were to buy the gear that you'd get good aftersales support. I'd gladly spend an extra 15% over the going rate.
Haven't you just described a BassBash? (although maybe not the extra 15% bit)
Hi, I am based outside Exeter, and looking ideally to join a function band or something similar. Experienced in this market, and in most other styles over the years, own gear and transport etc.
You might want to contact Dave and see if this is still available. Oh and welcome to the forum, there's quite a few Devonians knocking about on here. elom
Spot on! The clue is just a bit further down the page where elom found the first picture
10 gold stars to that man! I found the photo via google pictures rather than the bassgirls web site otherwise I would have spotted my mistake - possibly...

The last few gigs we've done the turn out has been low, really low, single figures low on one occasion. I know it's not us because these have been new venues in new towns for us, maybe its a January thing. It's hard to put in the effort though for an empty room, though we do try. However last night was great. A pub full of a younger crowd than we normally seem to get and they loved it. What's more we loved it too - it's amazing what a bit of crowd reaction does for you. We played a stormer too and playing the last song of the night (I predict a riot) with the whole pub dancing and singing along I thought yes, this is exactly why I put so much time and effort into the whole band thing. We got booked up by the venue for the rest of the year, got offered a slot at a local music festival (which we cant do cause of holidays - damn), had a couple of enquiries for parties etc and even had someone come and ask for a copy of our set list, which was a first. All in all it was just the boost we needed.

Watched 'School of Rock' on telly tonight and was interested in the bass that the girl was playing. I've no idea what it is though, but I'm sure someone here will. Both the guitars were Gibsons so I thought that maybe this might be too. Anyhoo, I've googled a photo of the bass:
...to redirect to another thread (HERE), even if it's carried out with full conviction and only good sentiment? Let me know...
Yes, it's cheeky (probably highly illegal or something) but it worked because I'm listening now. I'll save the review for your slicethepie entries

Never a good idea to mix work and pleasure, especially with the boss. He'll never just be the drummer in the band, he'll always be the boss to the rest of you (however much he thinks he isn't). That means that you can't just be yourself and enjoy it because you'll always be conscious (or subconscious) of having to work with these people come Monday morning. Suggest that you quietly head for the exit whilst not burning any bridges (still need to pay the rent/mortgage after all)

I came across Slice The Pie (www.slicethepie.com) recently. It looks like a potentially interesting way to find new unsigned music and offers the potential to secure £15,000 funding for your originals band. It does look slightly complex so have a good read of the FAQs. The blurb on the web site describes it like this:
Slicethepie enables artists to raise money directly from their fans to professionally record and release an album. How? We turn every music fan into a record label. On Slicethepie:

Artists can raise money directly from their fans to professionally record albums
Fans can become emotionally and financially involved at all levels of the music industry - scouting, breaking, investing in and influencing real artists
Investors can gamble on, trade in and profit from the success of these artists
Artists who secure finance pay Slicethepie a small royalty on album sales but keep all their copyright and publishing rights

Just thought I would flag this up in case it was of interest to our brothers in originals bands.

Are you allowed to pass on the credit note? Someone would probably buy it off you for £175

some very nice playing there

Not seen a backplate like that before. Looks great and an interesting touch. Beautiful bass all round.

Higher Ground - Chilli's version I know it's not the hardest thing in the world but I've not really slapped before so it's taking some doing. Making progress though.

Libraries are also a great way to expand your musical listening. My local library will let you borrow CDs at £1 per week. Far be it from me to encourage copyright theft but in this digital age...
Thanks to my place of work (big holiday/entertainment resort in Somerset, begins with B, and isn't Pontins ) I played about 280 nights, 2 sets average. Stamina is good, reading is good, wrists and technique not so good
Blimey that's a lot of gigs. If you want to see really bad technique though, just pop along to the Phoenix next week! (assuming you are in Chard that is) Oh and to add to the OP, I played 12 gigs last year (all in the last 6 months). Should be on for about 30/40 in 2008.

I have Mavis Cudicini, my kit-build P Bass copy. When I told the rest of the band that I was building it I was asked if I was going to give it a name and I said "Oh I don't really know" which sent them off into assorted Les Dennis as Mavis Riley impersonations. So it became Mavis. Mavis is my backup bass so she comes along to all the gigs but never gets played, hence the acquisition of the Cudicini surname. It has also been suggested that one of my other basses should be called 'Michelle MacManus' but the reasons for that cannot be disclosed on a family forum!
If you have no previous experience, you might want to consider starting off with a kit like this: For £70, you can't go too far wrong. http://www.thomann.de/gb/layla_bassguitar_kit_pstyle.htm
I did that and made 'Mavis Cudicini', my surprisingly playable backup bass. Well worth the effort and a valuable learning exercise.

What Ric have done is not exactly subtle is it? Yet, it's just business. If the demand massively exceeds supply then they can make more money by charging more and that ultimately is the job of any commercial enterprise, not making guitars but making money. Does this now make them overpriced? In my opinion yes but there are plenty of people who will still want one at this price. Whilst they continue to sell everything that they produce I doubt that our protestations will have much impact.
