1. Seeing as how we have just chalked up our 1000th member surely a press release to the music press would be worthwhile. A small mention in a couple of influential publications could deliver a lot of new members.
2.
there is possibly another brand making these basses...!
Hi Hansabass and welcome to the forum. This is quite a popular design that a number of manufacturers have produced over the years under a variety of names. Much like P or J copies the quality varies hugely and you could get a bargain or a stinker! However the 'Bass Collection' name is licensed so there should only be one manufacturer using it at one given time.
3. No I'm not selling mine already! However the guy that I bought mine from is selling one of his others off. It has a BIN of $800 so it may be gone soon. The seller was incredibly helpful with me when I bought mine, taking loads of extra photos etc, so has earned my recommendation. 4.
I don't like giving exact locations, but near Tiverton, I go to East Devon College.
Fair enough, I'm near Tiverton too. We've got quite a few Devonians on here now. In fact soon we may rival Northampton as the bass playing capital of the UK!
5. Another member joins the Devon massive. Whereabouts are you Bullet?
6. I have stage envy. Most of my gigs are played squeezed between a quiz machine and the ladies bog. I want a stage, a big stage and I want it now godammit! Oh alright then, a little stage. Or how about I can just stand on a pallet? (seriously though, looked like a good gig despite the weather)
7. How ironic, I was sat in that Italian restaurant directly opposite whilst you were playing. First time I'd been to Bath in years too. How did it go anyway?
8.
Timface and me (Dave from DHA) and the rest of the "Weekend rock stars" will be performing at the Cancer Research Relay for Life at Dawlish in Devon on the 28th of July. There will be other bands, etc supporting this event. We are on at about 7:00 and again at 9:15. Dave
I'll try and make it down. The other 4/5ths of my band are from Dawlish/Teignmouth anyway so I'll see if I can drag 'em along. Where is it, who's playing etc?
9.
Nice to see a 'different' Fender. So different I've never actually seen one except in pics. I like it's quirky look - reminds me of the Parker Fly's in a way.
Yeah, it certainly gets a reaction from everyone who sees it - I certainly don't think that there are many around. I'll try to bring it along to the next bass bash.
10. After major, major GAS I finally got myself a Fender Performer last week. I don't think that I've played enough basses to properly compare it to others but the sound is quite reminiscent of a Jazz at times. There's great flexibility between the two single-wound pickups, soloing the bridge and dialling in the bass gives a wonderful 70s style honk. It's far more subtle than its styling might suggest. And the neck, oh the neck! What a dream this is. The skinniest neck I've ever seen which almost seems to play itself. I'm using 0.40 - 1.00 strings but I'm almost tempted to go 0.35 - 0.90 as there is not much leeway between the G & E and the neck edge. The guy I bought it off in the States is a Performer nut. He has 4 in his collection (all immaculate) and this rather battered one. It has clearly been dropped on its rear end at some point and there is a fair amount of damage, fortunately cosmetic. It may not be in the greatest condition but it plays like a dream and at least I wont be too afraid to gig with it like I would if it was pristine. You'll either love the looks or loathe them. I love how it looks, I love how it sounds, I think I have found my bass. 11. Richard Hammond, of Top Gear, plays bass. WARNING: The following clip includes Justin Hawkins and is therefore not suitable for all sorts of people (But Hammond acquits himself quite well IMHO)
12. Mansons in Exeter www.mansons.co.uk Range - 9 Prices - 7 Service - 10 A dedicated bass room, wide range of stock and staff who are both knowledgable and friendly. Stuff is cheaper on the Internet but I'll often pay a few quid more to support a great local store. Well worth a day-trip to Devon. At the end of the day all business is about people. If you get the wrong sort of staff (and music shops often do) then you'll struggle. As a customer I'm not bothered about how good a musician the shop assistant is!
13. Good bass names too elom (& Mavis)
14. I would say my favourite band is probably the Manics, so that would be Nicky Wire.
15.
Now all I'll use is grolsch washers. ...If only they were available in black or clear.
Can't help for the clear though

1 July Gigs in England

At one point I could see some of the smokers outside the pub on the CCTV dancing away to our music - quite surreal. Nice to notstink of smoke when I got home - just sweat!
17. Well I must confess that I do like the idea of wall-mounting them - easy access, nice to look at and out of reach of the kids! I'm not sure the missus will go for it but I'll broach it gently. If that fails then I reckon that I'll take the shelves out of the cupboard in the spare room and one of those Thomann 3-guitar stands will fit just perfectly in the base.
18. My Fender Performer is winging its way across the Atlantic to me as we speak which will bring my collection up to 3. At present my current two are kept on the spare bed in their cases. This isn't going to work with 3 so I'm looking for some options for how I can store them, yet still have them accessible. Given that some of you have large numbers of basses - where do you keep them?
19. Problem solved. It is exactly as Gazm suggested. This is a limited edition of 300 basses and they all seem to have the 3/XXX format. Check out http://www.warwickbass.com/basssurvival101...humb_bb2003.htm and if you look at this picture you can see the same format number again on the 'number 1' bass. Hope this helps, elom

1 July Gigs in England

We have a gig at the Brass Monkey in Teignmouth on the 1st. They've had a refurb to coincide with the ban "We're gonna paint over the nicotine stains". To honour the occasion our first number is going to be 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' - really.
21. It's a little hard to put the genie back in the bottle but I thought I might try and clarify what I meant when I suggested that we should see more reviews below 3 stars. I'm not suggesting that the mag should be full of cheap rubbish (though the budget end does need to be catered for). If we look at the Gibson SG review as an example, I thought it was a good review. I've never played an SG and Stu's review told me a lot about his experience of the instrument. However I thought that on the balance of the review I would have expected to have seen a 2 star rating. (For those not familiar with BGM, 3 stars = "Average for the market sector: one to try out" and 2 stars = "Better Alternatives Exist") The final sentence of the review reads
"...it's quite a lot of cash for something which in my opinion is something of a one-trick pony. If you're a fan of the Gibson look, sound and feel it's one to try out, but if you're looking for something more comprehensive better alternatives exist."
On its own it's hardly worth a comment but I've thought it before with a few other reviews and felt that collectively it was a valid point to raise. It was certainly not my intention to cast any aspersions on Stuart, who I know to be a fine chap, or any of the other reviewers. I hope that helps to clarify a couple of things, at least from my perspective. elom
22. I had that very book arrive this morning from Amazon... Unfortunately there is something of a 'book queue' in the elom household at the moment so it might be a little while until I get to it.
23.
PM sent.
And replied. Item now closed.
24. Why do I now have visions of Stuart wearing a blindfold, 'testing' readers' wives and awarding stars? [shudder].... (seriously though, nice to know that my original suggestions are being considered at BGM Towers)
25. Not played this for years, it's on the iPod anyway! Free to a good home (though a contribution for postage would be appreciated): Amazon Link
