Weddings

My band has been booked to play a wedding - our first. The couple know the kind of stuff we play and said that they didn't want a typical wedding band. I'll be meeting them at our next gig anyway to discuss exactly what they want anyway but I thought I'd ask here for any tips. So what does a pub band need to know before they play a wedding? Any advice gratefully received. Also, they've asked if we could provide lighting. I said we'd see what we could do and get back to them but I haven't really got a clue. Hire or purchase? What are the options and the costs? I've done a bit of net searching without much success. Thanks elom
  2. I'm off to see them on Saturday at Twickenham. Maximo Park as support is a big bonus.
  3. When I was 15 I decided that I wanted to be in a band. There were loads of guitarists in my school and no bass players, plus it looked a lot easier! Got a Westone Thunder 2 back in 1984 and the rest was history.
  4.
i'm sure people aren't as hen pecked as they make out. probably just an irreverant remark most of the time, and maybe a bit of sales patter if it's in a for sale thread. after all, a seller is rarely going to say "I'm selling this cos I don't like it".
+1 A convenient reason why its a 'reluctant sale' when in fact you think the bass is a dog!
  5. The non-bass playing element is a major factor in getting the gig. Bass-wise you're either good enough for them or not (and I guess you know the answer to that already), most of it boils down to whether they like you and you like them. As others have said, just be yourself and see what happens.
  6.
i think i'm in luuuurve
Everyone loves Lydia - I still prefer the pink bobble hat phase though. Hey, they should get her for Bass Day! Can we start a campaign?
  7.
Doesn't Stuart Clayton wright for BGM? Or am I thinking of someone else?
One and the same.
  8.
the best playing bass I ever owned was my Modulus mucho bucks Flea bass. The second was my £299 Bass Collection Speakeasy bass. Incredible value for so little. the next after that was a Rockbass Fortress ( I think ). You don't have to spend mega bucks to get a top bass. Different people play different stuff when they pick up a bass - I play one of the fastest runs I know I can play. If I can't play it, it goes back on the rack, if I can about manage it it is a possible after a good setup, if it seems easy then its an instant purchase - the bass collection was the latter. Not a status symbol but if you're looking for playability over snob factor or a 'name' this is my number one choice. Everyone does them. You can even get them under the SX name (big in the US) for less but they don't have as good electronics
+1 for the Bass Collection Speakeasy. Got one and love it and at £299 new it's great value.
  9. I thought we might try something a bit different: Brodsky String Quartet James Jamerson (on upright) Charlie Watts And of course the classic vocal line up of Ron Sexsmith, Bjork and LL Cool J with RATM as the support act obviously
  10. Cool avatar Wil. Sam and Max - that takes me back. It'll be Day of the Tentacle next!
  11.
Edit - opinion on the web gives the audio delay through the system as 1/2 a second.
Should be fine, me and my drummer are rarely that close...
  12. Thanks guys, that's really helpful. If anyone would be so bold as to post their band biog that would be a really useful guide. (Or PM me if you're not so bold!) elom
  13.
corr i wants one of them now...
Well if you move fast you might be in luck. The guy who sold me mine is selling off one of his others to raise cash. It's in better condition than mine and has a BIN of $700. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;#entry36188 Having had it a couple of weeks now I can honestly say that I've not even picked up either of my other basses.
  14. No bidders and relisted with a reduced BIN of $700. Ebay Link I'd buy it myself if I hadn't just sold the cat to buy the last one!
  15. Not seen anything like this before and I thought it might appeal to some of the Fender-heads.
  16. We've been contacted by a bookings agency that have a Young Farmers do in 6 weeks but no band. We can do it and they are desperate so a deal is in the offing. The money is 4 times what we get playing pubs and this could be a good break for us. They want us to get a promo pack to them. I didn't want to seem like a small-time pub band to them (but you already know that we are!). One question, what exactly goes in a promo pack then?
  17.
You can pick up a used MIM Jazz for £275 ish. OLP Tony Levin, Musicman Sub4 or Yamaha BB414 are all excellent used buys. I very strongly recommend sitting down and playing with these basses (or any others you have a GAS attack for) before making a choice. You will be (for example) much better off buying a £120 Squier Jazz that is really comfortable in your hands than spending £300 on a MIM Precision that doesn't feel right for you.
That's very sound advice. You've got 2 things in your favour though.

Experience. You've been playing for a while and have had a couple of basses so you know a bit about what you like and what you don't. Plus you're not going to be intimidated by a music shop in the same way that a complete beginner probably would be. So get out there, try as many basses as you can get your hands on - even ones way outside your price range. Even if you can't afford them it's a great way to learn what characteristics you like and don't like. The bass bashes are a great chance to do this too.
Time. This is for Xmas, so that's 5 months. There is no need to make a quick decision and plenty of time to check every music shop in a 50 mile radius!
18.
Also, if you know any independent music publishing houses/methods to publish let me know, hal leonard won't even look at 'em and it'd be nice to be able to send them off to someone and see what they think.
Well you could always talk nicely to Basschat's own Stuart Clayton, the man behind Bassline Publishing. He might be able to give you a couple of pointers.
  19. Seeing as how we have just chalked up our 1000th member surely a press release to the music press would be worthwhile. A small mention in a couple of influential publications could deliver a lot of new members.
  20.
there is possibly another brand making these basses...!
Hi Hansabass and welcome to the forum. This is quite a popular design that a number of manufacturers have produced over the years under a variety of names. Much like P or J copies the quality varies hugely and you could get a bargain or a stinker! However the 'Bass Collection' name is licensed so there should only be one manufacturer using it at one given time.
  21. No I'm not selling mine already! However the guy that I bought mine from is selling one of his others off. It has a BIN of $800 so it may be gone soon. The seller was incredibly helpful with me when I bought mine, taking loads of extra photos etc, so has earned my recommendation. 22.
I don't like giving exact locations, but near Tiverton, I go to East Devon College.
Fair enough, I'm near Tiverton too. We've got quite a few Devonians on here now. In fact soon we may rival Northampton as the bass playing capital of the UK!
  23. Another member joins the Devon massive. Whereabouts are you Bullet?
  24. I have stage envy. Most of my gigs are played squeezed between a quiz machine and the ladies bog. I want a stage, a big stage and I want it now godammit! Oh alright then, a little stage. Or how about I can just stand on a pallet? (seriously though, looked like a good gig despite the weather)
  25. How ironic, I was sat in that Italian restaurant directly opposite whilst you were playing. First time I'd been to Bath in years too. How did it go anyway?
