1.
Mesa Boogie also made a much less popular Buster 200 wedge combo which might actually prove to be better value.
I've got a Mesa/Boogie Buster 200 wedge combo & it is bloody fantastic - wonderful all valve tone & LOUD for a 2x10. Highly recommended. Everyone that hears it goes mad for the tone... There was one on eBay recently - so they do appear every now & again even though Mesa/Boogie don't make them anymore...
 2.
"My Wal will never go. I've had it years. I can't say it was my first good bass because there were a few ok ones before it, but it has been with me through thick & thin, it sounds marvellous, and I love it!! I know I surprised Nik by saying the Wal was semi retired, but that's new toys for you. For some reason I am less worried about harm coming to the SUB5, which is NOT to say that the Wal will be wrapped in cotton wool and put away as a collectors item!! " +2 Echoing what both Rich and WalMan have said, mine would have to be my Wal Pro2e. It is the only bass that I can play without ever having to look at the fretboard to see what my hands are doing.. It's totally instictive I suppose because I've had Wals for almost 25 years now and especially, the old Pro models.. Also, every one of my other basses could be replaced more easily and i think that factor has to come into the equaition if you can only keep one bass. There's less of Wals around and they seem to get more expensive year after year! Al - perhaps you could say that your Wal is officially 'resting'
+1 for my Wal Custom - my first 'good' bass that I bought new in 1987. Even though I now have a 1960 Jazz & a fair few other lovely vintage Fenders - I think I might still go for the Wal first.
 3. 10 for me 455 + 10 = 465

 5. Damn I wish I hadn't seen that one... Oh I do like that - sweet. I can feel the GAS coming on bad...
 6.
I often see on the ebay link section people talking about this is a scam, that is a scam. But half of these I wouldn't have been able to tell it was a scam, and it isn't always that obvious. So I think we should make a list of things to look out for when buying a bass to check if it is some sort of scam.
Here's some things to watch for that should at least make you think twice... 1. Price. Scams work by luring gullible people in with bargain prices that they just can't resist. So you do need to have an idea of the realistic market value/price of the item. If it's a £5K vintage bass then the starting price will probably be for £ thousands. A scammer will start the bidding at a silly low price, with no reserve. 2. Photos. A good genuine seller will usually would provide a complete set of good photos. 3. Zero feedback, new seller. Yes - everyone has got to start somewhere...but this is when they definitely need to provide other things to reassure - like cash on collection. 4. 'Private' auction. 5. Locations: Especially the far North of Scotland. I'm sure there are many, many genuine sellers in the far North of Scotland - but it also seems to be overflowing with things like valuable vintage basses! This location has become a favourite of scammers - because how many folks from London (for example) are going to travel from London to check out a bass in Aberdeen??? Or ask awkward questions like 'can I come & check out the bass' or worse still 'I'll pay cash & collect the bass' 6. "FREE" shipping. 7. No offer to pay cash on collection. Any genuine seller will ALWAYS welcome inspection & cash on collection - especially for a valuable bass for example. If they don't then something is wrong. 8. No reply to questions. A genuine seller will always reply & may even provide a phone number for an expensive item like a bass & actively welcome questions...more especially if they are a new seller with 0 feedback. And you can always post the item here if you are suspicious - there's plenty of folks on BassChat who have a highly developed nose for sniffing out a scam, and who are only too happy to help in stopping them.
 7.
i WOULD SAY DOWN RIGHT OFFENSIVE
+100.
 8. This is a great thread - are you planning to add to it...? I would love to read some more - especially as we're planning to do something very similar next year. Cheers
 9. Just dropped down from 12 to 10.... but only to make space/free up resources ready for some serious new additions in 2008. Yet for over 15 years I had one bass - a Wal Custom - and never looked at anything else... GAS is a weird thing - but once it gets you - you're done for...there's no way back now!
 10. I didn't think I'd get amp GAS until I tried a 1960's Ampeg B-15 - but 10 seconds after plugging in I was done for... Then it took me many months to find one, ship it here from flipping Seattle & then get it restored back to stock & converted to UK voltage - but it was worth the effort. Tone heaven! 11.
Is this sold?
Yeah - Sorry I'm afraid so. Maybe you missed the bit where it says SOLD???

 13. Check these Calder Cases out - they look incredible! But the prices are outrageous!
 14. Charles Mingus Live in '64 DVD (PAL) Three classic gigs in Belgium, Norway & Sweden from 1964. Reckoned to be some of his best stuff ever... I've played this once from new - so it's in mint condition, as good-as-new. It's just not my cup of tea! (NB - It says on the cover that there's supposed to be a 24 page booklet with it - but there wasn't one in the case... And it was a shrinked-wrapped DVD that I got from Amazon) Cost me £15. So I want £8 inc P&P (PayPal is OK). Cheers. *** NOW SOLD ***
 15. +1 I think I'd have to agree...
 16. I can scan the wiring diagram that was used for the restoration of my '60 stack knob jazz if that's any help???
 17.
Is it common for vintage basses to have the fretboard removed/replaced? Just I was thinking of getting hold of a Vintage Jazz. Lovely bass by the way!
No - it's not common - unless they've had a hard life & been played lots...
 18.
As far as I'm aware, that headstock came in during the late 60's.
+1 Yes - I'd have to say that was pretty definitely a 1968-9 P Bass - due to a combination of : - the 23XXXX serial number (68 or 69 - definitely not 67) - the larger 'TV' style logo (generally accepted to have first been used in 1968-9) - the 1969-73 style bridge with single groove saddle barrel But I'm splitting hairs really - P basses from 67-69 are all very much the same... perhaps a 67 would be slightly more preferable. The basses from those 3 years are very much 70's basses in terms of quality of construction, playability & sound - they really can't be compared to the earlier 1960's (1960-1966) Fenders, which are very different basses. Still this looks like a very nice old P bass- with some great 'mojo' going on...! And the good ones always got played lots!
 19.
Thanks Lads. I think I'll be staying with the DR's. I get them from the States for $24.95 (£12.50) but with the extras you pay they work out a bit more. The only trouble is the last time I orderd them they took nearly a month to arrive.
Try this guy on eBay - great prices for DR & other strings - & they've always arrived in a week or so. Highly recommended. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/MyMusicStuff
 20. +1 for 'APC Overnight' - used them to ship 2 basses now (with insurance) - all good...
Forgot to mention that one Mr David Gilmour can clearly be seen employing "the Grolsch method" on the Live8 concert footage. Can we view that as "tacit endorsement"?
And Mr Pino Palladino as seen playing for The Who on Jools Holland...
 22.
I think the strings on this are d'addario because of the coloured ends, do you know what gauge? I think they are a bit heavier then I usually use, but I am liking them.
Yes - they're d'addario - Andy always puts these on (& recommends them) if he does a set-up & you don't supply your own strings... I usually use DR's - but I quite like d'addario's since I've had Andy do some set-ups for me. The ones on the Sandberg will be 105-45. I never use anything less than 105 on Jazz basses, or any bass for that matter. And for Precisions I always use 'proper' 110 gauge strings. (IMHO heavier strings are one of the BEST way to improve your bass tone. As using weedy light gauge strings is also guaranteed to ruin your bass tone. Exactly the same thing applies to 6 string guitars... ask any really good guitar player & they won't be using 9 gauge strings.)
 23.
The reason behind the statement is that the majority of the gig going public don't realise that a band with bad equipment may sound bad for that reason. A colleague of mine (who is a fantastic engineer) was actually assaulted by a punter who punched him on the nose, because the guitars weren't audible. Fact was that the guitarist was using a horrendous crate amp and kept turning the amp up and down mid song. A good band, in contrast, is NOT hard for ANYONE to do sound for.
+1000 Many 'musicians' don't even understand how to get a half decent sound out of their equipment - but work with good musicians & they always sound good WITHOUT a PA. And that's the key - it should sound great without a PA - you should only need a PA to lift the overall volume & let the singer be heard clearly. A PA engineer shouldn't have to fix the crap sound of the band & fight against the egos of 'musicians' who think they deserve to be louder than the rest of their band mates. Worst are certain 'tricks' that a lot of stupid so called 'musicians' use - a favourite of the talentless everywhere is turning down the volume on their bass or guitar in the sound check - so they've got that secret extra bit in reserve for the gig, just in case they start to worry that they're not being heard properly (i.e. loudest) by the audience. When I used to do FOH sound I once had to actually walk on stage & turn down a (I'm ashamed to say it) bass player's amp because he'd pulled that stunt. I had loads of people coming up to me & calling me a c**t because all they could hear was this idiot's crap bass playing - I had to show them the channel on the desk with his bass DI turned down to zero. But it was so bad (& with him grinning away because he thought he was so great now he'd turned himself up good & loud) that in the end I had to walk through the crowd get on stage & turn down his backline. And even famous musicians can ruin it for everyone.... I saw 'McAlmont & Butler' a few years ago in a small venue - great musicians, great gear, great singer - but 'super star' guitarist Bernard Butler had his guitar ridiculously super loud on stage (a classic symptom of GAK abuse not too mention over-inflated ego) so everyone was screwed: the rest of the band, the poor foldback engineer & the FOH engineer. He's infamous for doing it apparently - but no-one will tell him to turn down. Though I can see the funny side as well.... There's a great story about a huge Stones stadium gig when Keith Richards turned his amps up horrendously loud on stage - so the Jagger says 'Keith - what you doing? Your guitar's too loud!'. Keith's explanation? It turned out that Keith didn't actually appreciate that his FOH guitar sound was going through a 10 zillion watt PA system at gigs.... and when he saw the size of the crowd he thought he'd better turn up his backline to the max so the people at the back could hear what he was playing!
 24. Adam bought a Sandberg JJ4 from me.... Very smooth & easy transaction with great comms. An all round top guy - highly recommended!
