Just bought a set of Fender P5 pickups off Barrie. It was a thoroughly enjoyable deal with a very nice chat and exchange of stories via PM. The pickups were packed up very well and arrived in tip-top condition very promptly which is fantastic. Many thanks Barrie, been a pleasure Cheers, Simon.

I played a 2008 revamp in a shop when they first came out it was the best P I've ever played (played and owned quite a few). It was perfect weight and balance, tone and feel. The fit and finish were also excellent. I certainly would have bought it new but couldn't afford it at the time. Boy that sucked. The post 2012 Am Standards now have Custom Shop pickups. Boom!

The Fender deluxe P special has a thin Jazz neck BTW.

I like all three, much more interesting than the usual, although I am a sucker for the '60s pastels. Daphne blue and tort have been on my bucket list for some time.

I say only, in relation to how much we all start throwing at basses we're not quite happy with. Can be hundreds. Good luck mate, hope you find something nice that suits you.

The other alternative is to just buy a Fender Precision that you really get on with and see how that goes (insist the shop gives it a proper set up as part of the sale.) If you really find you can't live without a bridge pup, get one installed later on. At least you'll have a bass you'll love everything about. Cheaper than fannying about buying new necks etc. here and there too. Been there. It gets expensive.

My first dealings with John.. He made me up a nice vintage P bass loom and I received it less than 24 hrs after my first enquiry PM. Not installed it yet but all the components are top quality, and his solder work is so neat and tidy (tidier than my USA Fender to be honest). It came installed on a card template with clear instructions and even a little screwdriver , all well boxed up for a safe journey. Well impressed and very pleased! The only downside I can see is that with the solderless connections it came with, there'll be no holding me back trying out all sorts of pickups with complete ease! Thanks again John for the fantastic goods and excellent service. Top chap. Edit: I've now installed it and it's as good as I hoped. Rock solid pots and sounds clear as a bell yet it can get really phat now thanks to the .1uF cap I specified. Great stuff!

Yes, great idea! I sold Eric a Yamaha BB in a smooth and easy deal. He paid for it right away and was very friendly on the PMs. He let me know as soon as it arrived safely which I was grateful of as it's always a worry sending a bass by courier. I've always loved Dave Margen's burpy P bass tone (call it moist and spanky myself ) Have you ever seen this vid? There's some good up close shots along the way. Love his work on Santana's Moonflower album, some if the best burpy P tone ever recorded in my opinion (if indeed we're on the same page here! ) I always thought he used a maple boarded P to get that sound but no, turns out he used this Oly white pre CBS P on everything. He still uses it today if and when he plays apparently, your '62 should do the business with the right strings/set up. Good luck with the ongoing quest! (Oh yeah, Dunlop's are cracking strings but I never gave mine chance to die properly so let us know how you get on.) PS..
