Just bought a set of Fender P5 pickups off Barrie. It was a thoroughly enjoyable deal with a very nice chat and exchange of stories via PM. The pickups were packed up very well and arrived in tip-top condition very promptly which is fantastic. Many thanks Barrie, been a pleasure Cheers, Simon.
2. I played a 2008 revamp in a shop when they first came out it was the best P I've ever played (played and owned quite a few). It was perfect weight and balance, tone and feel. The fit and finish were also excellent. I certainly would have bought it new but couldn't afford it at the time. Boy that sucked. The post 2012 Am Standards now have Custom Shop pickups. Boom!
3. The Fender deluxe P special has a thin Jazz neck BTW.
4. I sold an Italia Rimini to Neil, very easy dealings with good communication as we worked things out. He was true to his word, quick payment, no fuss. Deal with confidence. Cheers!
5. I'm leaning towards the Capri orange. Ahem, 'get me bomber jacket... Really, the orange is very cool.
6. I like all three, much more interesting than the usual, although I am a sucker for the '60s pastels. Daphne blue and tort have been on my bucket list for some time.
7.
Yeah, you and everyone else who just said to buy a P-Bass are probably right. I definitely wouldn't be able to just install the bridge pup later though, seriously not handy. It really bothers me that there doesn't seem to be a mid-range type of PJ Fender Precision.
Sorry, I didn't mean to do it yourself A good tech could carry out the work for you. All in, it should only cost you about £120. I say only, in relation to how much we all start throwing at basses we're not quite happy with. Can be hundreds. Good luck mate, hope you find something nice that suits you.
8. The other alternative is to just buy a Fender Precision that you really get on with and see how that goes (insist the shop gives it a proper set up as part of the sale.) If you really find you can't live without a bridge pup, get one installed later on. At least you'll have a bass you'll love everything about. Cheaper than fannying about buying new necks etc. here and there too. Been there. It gets expensive.
9. Schecter diamond P custom sounds just the ticket. They have a very good rep in the bang for buck stakes. http://www.richtonemusic.co.uk/products/schecter_diamond_p-custom_4_white.asp?gclid=CLH8gue4xL8CFVMRtAoddlsAGg
10. Hey that sounds great to me! Do you have a really low action too? Here's some more Dave Margen, this one is off Moonflower (just had it on and it reminded me if this thread) Great burpy P tone that always makes me giggle about half way through when he gets stuck in Only a short track but I love it. Love the whole album. Santana - Zulu: http://youtu.be/XBHqYRnqm8o
11. My first dealings with John.. He made me up a nice vintage P bass loom and I received it less than 24 hrs after my first enquiry PM. Not installed it yet but all the components are top quality, and his solder work is so neat and tidy (tidier than my USA Fender to be honest). It came installed on a card template with clear instructions and even a little screwdriver , all well boxed up for a safe journey. Well impressed and very pleased! The only downside I can see is that with the solderless connections it came with, there'll be no holding me back trying out all sorts of pickups with complete ease! Thanks again John for the fantastic goods and excellent service. Top chap. Edit: I've now installed it and it's as good as I hoped. Rock solid pots and sounds clear as a bell yet it can get really phat now thanks to the .1uF cap I specified. Great stuff!
12. Terrible news. Proper legend who has seen and contributed massively to the development of jazz. He shared a room with Scott Lafaro in the 50's too. Some stories there. Another library burns down.. Thank you Charlie x
13. Ernie Ball Earthwood. But they're rare as rocking horse plop and expensive now. Get a cheap double bass, some Innovation Silver Slaps strings and away you go. Bluegrass city. (That's what I did when I walked this path)
14. Now £185 posted bump
15.
Hi, maybe this is a daft question, but how does it sound when it's played acoustically? Does it have much volume to it?
Not a daft question at all Yes it is relatively loud when played acoustically, has a really nice tone when played unplugged too. It's a lot louder than a solid body bass but of course not as loud as a true acoustic. It's great for practicing acoustically with an mp3 player with speakers for instance.
16. Yes, great idea! I sold Eric a Yamaha BB in a smooth and easy deal. He paid for it right away and was very friendly on the PMs. He let me know as soon as it arrived safely which I was grateful of as it's always a worry sending a bass by courier. I would do business with Eric again for sure. Recommended. Many thanks!
17. I've always loved Dave Margen's burpy P bass tone (call it moist and spanky myself ) Have you ever seen this vid? There's some good up close shots along the way. Love his work on Santana's Moonflower album, some if the best burpy P tone ever recorded in my opinion (if indeed we're on the same page here! ) I always thought he used a maple boarded P to get that sound but no, turns out he used this Oly white pre CBS P on everything. He still uses it today if and when he plays apparently, your '62 should do the business with the right strings/set up. Good luck with the ongoing quest! (Oh yeah, Dunlop's are cracking strings but I never gave mine chance to die properly so let us know how you get on.) PS.. Your bass is always gonna sound better if you rock it with a nice porno moustache! David Margen (Carlos Santana Band)- Runnin' - Epi…: http://youtu.be/hp7w6x1Fe7Y

20.
When The Sex Pistols reformed, did they play there, as don`t think so and that would have been a good `un.
When the Pistols reformed in '96 Glasto was taking a sabbatical that year so the Sex Pistols played the Phoenix Festival in Stratford instead. Saw half their set which, as much as I grew up loving them, seemed a bit by numbers. Decided that the J.T.Q. who were playing in a nearby marquee might be a better bet. I was right. They had half the crowd on stage and the whole place was dancing their arses off totally having it. Amazing!
21.
GAS can be an ephemeral creature. Or rather, the subject of GAS can be an ephemeral creature. I've observed myself heavily intoxicated by the GAS, over things that I wouldn't sniff at just weeks later. Then there are things that build the GAS over a longer duration, and to a greater pressure. In my case it was Jazz basses, I had continuous Jazz GAS for years, but that seems to have evaporated into the ether too. I've been surprised by GAS, GASsing over things that I traditionally had a strong aversion to. Sometimes I'll just get a whiff of GAS. Sometimes there's no GAS whatsoever. Then there's recurring GAS. I'm currently suffering from recurring GAS. I'm GASsing for a bass that I've GASsed over and subsequently owned 4 times in the past ... and got rid of 4 times for good reason. Einstein said "The definition of insanity is doing something over and over, and expecting a different result", yet I wont let go of the idea of this thing. Since I last owned the bass in question my playing circumstances are more conducive. My experience and knowledge are greater, so I know what to tweak. I'm more aware of the limitations of the instrument, so my expectations are more accurate, etc ... That's the kinda stuff I'm telling myself, at least. Maybe it's a case of the chase being better than the kill? Maybe the statistics prove something and the result will be disappointment? Maybe I'll have cracked the code with this bass. It's an expensive trip, but once again I'll gladly take a notional plunge into uncertainty and risk. Yeahhhh!!!!! GAS!!!! Droooooool!!!
So, you've owned four Stingrays then!
