WARNING OF CONFIRMED SCAMMERS
Acebassmusic replied to binky_bass's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
There's an alembic 5 string on eBay being sold by tesco outlet or something. Click on description and it says a buy it now price for £1200, for a series model!!! Mmmmm I don't think so. Pristine and stunning is somehow they describe it. Be very wary folks, I reckon:-/
Looks like the "seller" is still allowed to participate in E-bay even though they have been reported sooooo many times...... Heres a previous thread....http://basschat.co.uk/topic/196012-has-got-to-be-too-good-to-be-true/page__fromsearch__1 -
On the back of the pots there are usually some metal wrap over tabs that hold the assembly together. I have found by GENTLY tapping or pressing on them it can tighten the controls. Just remember to do it a little at a time and evenly on all tabs, other wise.....

Hi, It all depends where you are staying and whether you have a car. If you dont then taxis can be quite expensive and a pain. There's several Guitar Centre's in Houston - one north of the Beltway on I-45, one on Westheimer, near South Voss Road (this ones the best), one in Pasadena (Fairmont Parkway) and one in Clearlake, south of Houston off the _45 on Nasa Road 1. Evans Music City - on Westheimer near Guitar Centre Music-Go-Round - I-45 South Rockin Robins Danny D's - South of Houston Texas Music Emporium - I-45 North near Guitar Centre - sometimes has Ken Smith basses in there. If you have time to go out to Austin there is the Bass Emporium which although they have a wide range of very nice basses, I personally found the customer service to be sadly lacking.... Darn it......you've made me want to go on a tour of Houston music shops now...... Mike

Bottom End Reinforcement – Best Bass Bins ? PA question
Acebassmusic replied to Nostromo's topic in Repairs and Technical
I used to use a pair of Electrovoice S118 (18") bins for bottom end. They were pretty good but I never seemed to get that kick drum punch / cut through from them. After looking around at different types I went for a pair of Turbosound TXD-115 (15") subs. These are smaller, lighter, clearer and give a better sound at all volume levels! The wattage specs dont seem to compare to the Yorkville you have been using....however I tried to use 2 pairs of TXD-115s for a gig at the Aberdeen Beach Ballroom (capacity 4 to 500) a couple of months ago as I thought we might need a bit more weight in the sound. They worked great.....too much in fact that I ended up taking one pair out and using only one set for a full 5 piece band & drums mic'd up! I've since decided to get rid of the extra pair. As far as pricing theyre about £1,000 new for a pair but can be picked up for about half that secondhand. I've no experience of the Alto gear so cant comment on them. Brass nut... What are the advantages?
Acebassmusic replied to blunderthumbs's topic in General Discussion
Advantage = open notes sound like fretted notes. Disadvantage = they fall off in the cold.... Coat, hat and gloves on....exiting door rapidly.... -
Rio - great bass line which was a "guilty pleasure" of mine when I was young and playing in a metal band! I don't think they realised that some of the bass lines I came up with for our "originals" were based on funky root, fifth, octaves and ghost notes etc. that I nicked from here...lol. Here's a good vid on how the line is broken down .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28t0MDhe82I
..... we're 3 committed musicians and a drummer .....
Loved the quote ...lol Regarding the singer....goodbye! As others have mentioned try doing the songs between you and dont dismiss the option of a female singer who can really belt out a toon!

Acebassmusic replied to Silvia Bluejay's topic in Events
At last........ticket bought.......flights booked.......hotel sorted......ear plugs packed...... Always had the intention to go, but for a variety of reasons missed it. Using the excuse that its my birthday that week so this is a "prezzie to me". Must remember to leave the credit card at home....lol -
..... so other than Newtone what elese is available with a tapered B (and ideally a tapered E too)?
I use Ken Smith string with B & E tapers which I believe you can get from Bass Direct?

Strange! I've used both Hercules wall hangers and "neck grabbing" stand for my Smith and Sei 6-ers. Albeit the foam is a little snug, they do fit.

Would you buy a bass or amp from Tesco?
Acebassmusic replied to brensabre79's topic in General Discussion
In the traditional music shops up here bass is treated at best as an afterthought and at worst like the guitar's big, inept cousin
Now, now Mr Neepheid don't exagerate things.......you know they dont rate bass as highly as that up here..... Tescos bass....mmm....might just get one to go with my t-shirt http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TESCO-VALUE-BASS-PLAYER-White-Tshirt-Fender-Gibson-All-Sizes-Perfect-for-Xmas-/250934849296 -
It sounds as if its a technique problem. When you're playing normally do you have the bass slung high or low? Do you tend to wrap your thumb over the top of the fret board or position it in the centre of the neck? Having the bass low and thumb over the top may cause you problems. If you post some pics of your bass / hands it may help us offer advice :-)

Congratulations on the new arrival. I'm really happy with mine : tone and volume in a light weight package! If you do break it in using the 25k sine wave be careful what volume you use. It may not sound loud to you but people 3 streets away will feel it.....now go wake those neighbours up

Audacity 2.0.2- ....playalong time delay in software with overdub
Acebassmusic replied to iconic's topic in Recording
PS this knobbing about for hours is par for the course in the early days anyway as you are making sense of a load of stuff that has ints own perverse logic. You'll get there in the end but you will get days when the PC looks sure to be going out the window....
Phew....not just me then Over the years I seem to have spent hours (even days!) trying to configure and get sound coming out of different software packages and sound cards. I'm quite computer savvy and an engineer so I'm quite comfortable with technical thingys'. What seems to be logical in the real world doesnt seem to apply here...lol. Good luck! -
If it's just a vocal PA I'd say the singer - the rest of us own our own instruments.
Oh dear, oh deary me......you really should know by now that the singer gets the PA supplied along with the fluffy towels, puppies and green M&M's.... Seriously though, in our band I own and supply the PA. It allows me to ensure 1) it's made up of good gear that works together 2) its kept in good nick 3) it works! 4) it saves any problems on who "owns" what or is "responsible" should anybody leave or an item blows up and needs replacing. The only thing I expect the singers to provide is ther own good quality mic. In the past I've tried the "band buys the PA" and "you buy that bit and I'll buy this bit" - it usually ends up messy when someone leaves........or forgets their piece of equipment for a gig.......or forgets that it needs to actually work for a gig.......sorry....rant over I like the idea of renting the PA back to the band.....not thought of that one.....doh!
just enjoy the audience reaction and play it like it's the first time you've ever done it
That would be "in the wrong key" and "not knowing the changes" for me then......it was a long time ago and I hadnt been playing long....honest
