Converting a Fender P-Bass to lefty
brensabre79 replied to AndyBass's topic in Repairs and Technical
I tried that technique for tapping out a nut once, I managed to split the nut in two and remove the end of the fingerboard with it! I think someone had superglued the fecker in at some point though, as I have heard this technique widely used, just beware! -
I don't think you'll need to route the cavity if you use mini pots
-
Indeed they do. here

Good spot. Always nice to get cheap valves. I hope they survive the shipping and all work/last ok, let us know when you get 'em
I use floating anchor. I move my thumb depending on which string I'm playing. Works well for me. Muting the strings with your right hand is a technique that came in long after the end of the 60's. We've Got To Get Out Of This Place wasn't played muted by Chas Chandler as he used a pick.
I mute and use a pick loads, its how you get that 60s flatwound sound with roundwounds on innit? I like to rest my thumb on the pickup or the end of the neck some of the time, depends on what you're playing doesn't it? its a different sound.
You'd need to add the Rhodes before that would work. :-) CB
I wouldn't trust them at all, I had one of their Suitcase Pianos once, would it f**k fit in my suitcase!

Lace Bass Bars - Anyone tried them?
brensabre79 replied to brensabre79's topic in Accessories and Misc
Cheers BigRedX, I think I'll go the old Gibson style route on this one then. I thought they looked cool, especially with the hipshot grip knobs to match, but I was dubious as to the output really. If the bass was active that would be fine... but its not, and I'm after an older sound wit this one. Yeah flat ones would be cool Darkstrike, I think Lace do make a very flat bass pickup, but its just a black monolith type of thing. I guess with that sort of elongated 'n' shape they could even go over the strings and double as a pickup cover (for the none existent pickup underneath!) and slide along on rails. -

Hi everyone, just thinking about getting one of these for my semi-acoustic bass. Wondering if anyone has tried them...? Also wondering if I can get them in the UK! Cheers Bren
The Korg G5 takes a lot of current - don't remember exactly but I think it's something like 1.5 - 2.0 amps. I found that with a multi-supply, plugging in the Korg meant that most of the other pedals stopped working and other weird sh*t started happening. I'd start by looking up the power rating of the 5way adaptor and see what it's rated at.
This, you're probably not getting enough current for all your FX, so while they will all turn on you're likely to get issues like for example hum. Usually mains hum is related to an earth loop, but as you're using DC pedals they won't be earthed, so I would say you need a power supply with as many amps (or mA) as the total of all your pedals require. so... e.g. Pedal 1 = 500mA, pedal 2 = 300mA, pedal 3 = 400mA, Pedal 4 = 1300mA total = 2500mA or 2.5A most 9v off the shelf power adapters are about 500mA - 1000mA

Where to get a Jazz 5 string body made?
brensabre79 replied to Angel's topic in Repairs and Technical
There's usually loads of these on eBay, some loaded some just the bare body. There's also occasionally some bits on here. Having one made will be costly wherever you go. -
Converting a Fender P-Bass to lefty
brensabre79 replied to AndyBass's topic in Repairs and Technical
just swap the nut and you can undo the bridge saddles on your badass, although I think the offset of the screws is different, unlike the Fender ones which are all the same and reversible so you might have to re-groove or replace the saddles or get a new bridge if thats not possible. Obviously a complete setup will be required too. Everything else will be as you're used to so no need to worry -
Interesting! I used to get sharp pains in my back, around the right shoulder blade when I was a teenager... Had the strap pretty damn high then! Maybe it was due to my plucking arm being at such a weird angle?
Yep that's exactly where I got it.
I never had lessons, but a book I brought which taught me fingerstyle said the strap height is best set to the same as sitting, so Ive always done this more or less.
Doesn't it depend on how you're sitting?

How to sell a pre-CBS Precision...
brensabre79 replied to pobrien_ie's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I think the username of the person selling says all I need to know. Even if I did have the money and I wanted such a trashed old bass I don't think I'd be buying it off someone called ninebobnote, from the internet or a card in the newsagents window, or indeed a genuine vintage bass guitars shop. -
Westfields are probably poly rather than Nitro so shouldn't yellow with age like nitro does. You'll probably be ok, but not sure where tey put the decal. If its before the laquer you'll have to sand it right back, if its on top you might get away with just sanding down a tad then smoothing over...

I'd make sure its the same 2x10 as the one you have though, if you get a different 2x10 you'll run into similar problems to getting a 1x15 in terms of EQ. I.E the settings you need to apply for one speaker may make the other speaker sound worse because they have a different flat sound.
-
Yes I'd be interested to see how this stacks up against the JC, there's quite a price difference!

I tried having my strap a couple of inches higher on a gig the other night. Actually it was slightly easier to play, even on my Sabre which has always been slightly more hard work than my Jazz basses. However... Not only did I feel I looked like a bit of a muso (not in a good way, I mean the way where you look like a T-Rex), it gave me backache! (which was an unpleasant surprise) so its going back to where it was and I'll just keep practicing.

After an embarrassing zipper failure on stage some years ago, I always ensure the bottom of the bass cover that area, and now the middle aged spread has started to settle in the bass kinda positions itself, with the contour on the back of the bass fitting snugly with my slight belly. The chances of getting a decent buckle rash are getting slimmer and slimmer which unfortunately I am not. Be careful about having the bass too high though, or you'll start to look like a T-Rex

Reasonable bedroom/practice amp (£150 or so)?
brensabre79 replied to Danny_777's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hi Dan welcome to BC Go for secondhand, definitely. There are lots of pretty good practice amps out there, but for £150 you could get something that will take you through to small gigs too. Roland Bass Cube, Hartke A70 / A100 immediately spring to mind, there are many others. Have a look on here or on eBay etc. Look for something local and go try it out! Shipping an amp costs quite a bit due to size/weight, so if you can pick it up yourself you'll get a lot more amp for your money. A 30w bass amp will not serve a practice with acoustic drums, it just wont be loud enough. I'd look for something 100w or more if you intend to practice with a band - its not all about watts with bass amps, but thats a rough guide to get started. -
Can you use a combo speaker as an extension cab?
brensabre79 replied to Defo's topic in Amps and Cabs
Its two questions really, with two answers... You can use the speaker half of a combo as a speaker, as in bypassing the amp part. You cannot however plug the speakon output of your amp into the speakon output of your combo and expect it to work. You need to isolate the speaker of your combo from the amp of your combo basically. If you're not sure how to do this I would avoid it as making a mistake could cost you both your amp and combo. Some combos are simply a speaker cabinet with an amp bolted on top and actually have a wire coming out of the speaker part going in to the amp (or technically the other way around) - usually with a jack or just hardwired. If this is the case then, assuming you have the right connectors, you can plug the wire coming from the speaker part of your combo into your separate amp instead of the combo amp. -
I trust you have tried here I know there's one in the music shop near here, but as you're in Manchester not much use I suppose. Aren't these discontinued now?
It's at The Hampden Arms in South Heighton, Just outside Newhaven. A compact place but usually a good music and fine beer venue
Ah yes, I've played there. Might pop down later on then - didn't know they were doing jam nights
