  3. +1 the Super12, I've got the 'T' with the tweeter but to be honest has more highs than I'll ever need so its rolled off halfway. I'd say compared to a lot of cabs they are relatively flat sounding (in terms of colouration) so whatever you put in from your amp you'll get out - without anything missing. Great if you have a good sounding amp, but some amps are specifically designed to go with the speakers from the same manufacturer (TC springs to mind). Also a lot of cabs seem to have a dip in the mid range, which is great for HiFi speakers as everything sounds very pleasant, but put them in a band scenario and you'll always be turning up to hear yourself. So depending on the amp you have, you might find the Barefaced a bit too honest! The good news is that with an EQ adjustment you should be able to get whatever sound you want, but don't expect it to sound like any other cab on the market. It took me a couple of gigs to get used to hearing myself really clearly wherever I was on stage without blasting out the rest of the band. I run my Genz Shuttle amp completely flat with my Super12 (tweeter rolled off halfway) - the amps a bit clinical but the cab is monster, its a one hand carry/wheel to the car and it fits in my tiny boot too.

  5. Welcome to the club! took me years too but once I did I haven't looked back! I'd play it in anger (at a gig) a few times before you work out what you need to do it (probably not much). If it plays well and sounds well its probably better to let it get on with it.
  6. Are Margin Music still going in Macc? They might hire you one... they used to lend us all sorts of stuff for gigs. Sadly I'm 250 miles away from Macc these days! Come to think of it, if Cuban Knights is still open Alistair had one of my old basses on the wall, its a P copy with a painting of a woman on it (don't ask) its a sh*t bass though.

It takes me a good half hour after I get in and unload all the stuff just to wind down, really don't need to be plunged straight in to the bitter end of a girls drinking session! BTW, not wanting to be sexist, but what is it with groups of women, the volume goes up tenfold for each extra woman? If we could harness that power and put it in a box that would be the loudest rig on earth!

  11. Bargain Bass Thomann are the pits. I ordered a tbox powered monitor from them, it came without the mount. I contacted them, after 3 weeks they sent half the mount. Contacted again, another 2 weeks and I get the rest so its ready to use 6 weeks from when I ordered it. Then I get a bill for £20 for the two shippings of the bits that should have been in the box in the first place. (rant over) I guess it works both ways with them, sometimes you get something you didn't order, sometimes you order something you don't get!
  12. Actually a lot of very well respected players use quite a high action. SRV was mentioned above, he used very thick strings and a very high action, thats how he got that fat sound. Same goes for a lot of big players, both bass and guitar - you'd be surprised how awful some of the instruments they play can be. If you have light strings/low action you'd better be a light player and the strings will still tend to choke a little if you give it some beans. I'd try the bootzillas or lo-riders 50-110, there is not much difference in thickness but there's just a little more tension in the feel for you. And I would raise the action a tad - you will get used to it, and your bass will sing so much louder. I expect the shock of being dropped in at the deep end has made this seem worse than it is, and (if you have a critically low action) harder than it should be. If you've ever played a 5 string you'll know that you can't twang the low B all that hard before it bangs against the fingerboard and chokes out - its similar with drop tuning, there are some measures you can take with adjustments but mostly its about getting used to the feel.
  13. Sometimes it gets like this, but I always make a promise that if I drop practicing one day for something that needs to be done NOW! then I try to do double the next. Although I don't practice on a gig day unless I have to learn a new tune for the gig. And I don't practice the day after a gig unless I want/need to. The rest of the time its 30 mins a day or else 1 hour the next. My best time to practice is when I put something in the oven for dinner. Everything takes half an hour at 200c so instead of watching it cook I get on the bass instead Also, sometimes you don't have to have a bass to practice, if you travel on the bus with your ipod you can imagine yourself playing along (best with a tune you know how to play a bit) - if you concentrate on the playing, as far as your mind is concerned you've practiced playing the tune - certainly helps me when time is a rarity, next time i play it's just that bit more together.

  16. I wanted a Ric for years and years. They were the holy grail of basses in my eyes. Then my band got a deal, with an advance to upgrade our instruments. First thing I did was go and buy a Ric. It was sh*t. I still want another one though

Having just been told by his mate that I was in the band, he proceeded to continue to tell me how good that band are tonight, that he goes to all their gigs and has been following them for the last 18 months. He went on to tell me I should visit their website. His mate interjected again, "[u]he's[/u] the bass player you moron", but alas he continued... "You should see the bass player in this band, when they do the last song he puts on a Fez and jumps around all over the place. Really? I said. I might have to try that and see if any f**ker notices!!
  18. I guess its probably the same as guitar amps and guitar types... Use a strat with a marshall and it'll sound like breaking glass because there isn't enough output from a standard strat to drive the pre in a marshall. Use a Les Paul, or something with humbuckers with a Vox or Fender twin and it'll start breaking up before you can hear it and sound mellow and fat. And so the general consensus is to use Fender Twin or Vox AC30 with a Strat, and a Marshall with a Gibson (other guitars and amps are avialable - this is just the classic combinations and why). I do think that Bass amps are alot more flexible in terms of the input handling, but in terms of the sound they will be voiced in a way that best suits a certain kind of bass, and a certain kind of music. Hence Ashdowns and Ampegs are often seen with rock bands wheras the more clean/modern Markbass, Genz etc. usually grace the back of a Jazz stage. IMO anyway
  19. We often get this phenomenon in pub gigs where we all have to run off one manky old socket or something. I think it has to do with the amount of watts being drawn through a single socket, theres only so many available. I'm not talking the output watts of your amp but the required watts to run the various bits of equipment the band is using. Add all the amps, PA, outboard, lights etc. and you'll quickly get to the limit of power that one socket can provide. That's when amps start buzzing or acting up and generally underperforming - especially the ones with valves. ...on the other hand it could be that your amp is fu***d, so I would test it out at a practice or something.
  20. Good tip, although the narrowest one is the 'Jazz Bass' nut - which is probably the one you got. I had this trouble with a tusq nut I bought, it was too wide for my skinny neck. I ended up getting a blank and filing the slots in myself - which is not a task I would care to repeat! I'm not sure what Fender were doing in the 70s but it clearly wasn't measuring stuff!

'75 here so I'm halfway there with my white bitsa Jazz, ('73 body with a) '75 neck - one of the very last of the 4 bolters and with white blocks I'm not too fussed about the body (I like the colour and its pristine) but that neck and I will never part company, its like it was formed around my hand and every single other bass I play on seems like hard work by comparison.
  22. IIRC 60 spacing the centre of the pole pices are 3.5" apart, 70s spacing 4" apart. Its difficult to tell whats going on with that scratchplate on the pic, but the screw holes for it on the lower horn seem to be in completely the wrong place. I've had problems aligning scratchplates in the past because the neck pocket cutout is not quite right, this acts as a pivot point to misalign the whole thing, but yours seems to be an extreme case. Best bet would probably be to draw your own scratchplate that fits this body, cut it out of card and send it off to get one made for it.
  23. hmmm Does the neck fit in the pocket - i.e. no screws, just physically fitting the two bits of wood together without any gaps? DO four of the holes in the body line up with the holes in the neck at all or is there just no alignment whatsoever? The screws in the body look like they are quite far near the centre compared to a standard fit and I'd be concerned about drilling that close in to the truss rod on the neck. Personally I would fill in the body holes (properly, with correct size dowel) and line up with the neck holes, but its not ideal. Its a very critical place for both bits of wood IMO and anything that weakens this (like extra holes dotted around) isn't good. I would also fit with something like [url="http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Strat-Electric-Guitar-Neck-Bolt-Upgrade-Repair-Kit-Thin-Body-DIY-Sustain-Project-/290783458673?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item43b40b7571"]this[/url] to increase strength and stability too... IF the body and neck fit together in the first place of course!
