1. I've got their 7-string set on mine and they seem fine. Not that I've had much experience of 7-strings, mind.
 2.
You can call anything jazz if you want to - radiohead are jazz-rock? It's a bit stupid though. I hate these endless classifications, genres and sub-genres.
I think I'll try my hand at some death jazz.
 3.
I just want to be held.
No problems. Cuba's nice this time of year and you'll look lovely in orange. Might need a new beret though.
 4.
It's all subjective obviously, but the last two adjectives I would apply to Chris Squire's bass playing are, 'muffled' and/or 'distorted'.
You should have a listen to "Yessongs" then. Not muffled, I'll grant you...
 5.
Because they treat the wood with a chemical that turns you into a git.
Did you know that if you eat a Warwick, you'll die? Well, a proper Warwick anyway.
 6.
Playing originals through crap gear, well you can always claim that the muffled and distorted noise coming from you amp is intentional.
True. It worked for Chris Squire.
 7. You may find the uk.people.consumers.ebay FAQ of use. And, come to that, the newsgroup uk.people.consumers.ebay itself. Packed with handy hints and tips on using ebay...
 8. I've almost managed to get rid of the '52, the replacement '60 is far superior in every way, especially harmonics. Somewhat heavier, but more comfortable all the same. Those spring-out buttons are great, aren't they? Just a little touch and they pop out so you can fiddle with them to your heart's content.
 9.
I'm not sure anyone does the WMC's for fun...
Well, we do them for money, but that's not to say that fun can't be had. There's a couple of clubs we do that are good fun, they enjoy themselves, have a dance, and the remember who we are too. There's a few which are just about OK - they're the ones which are gradually emptying as they lose their memberships. Mind you, in Brum, one can get 50% of the audience onto the dance floor by playing UB40, dreadful cod-reggae sh*te though it is.
 10.
Interesting!........ what tribute bands , might a crap bass player be able to get away with??????
U2.
 11.

On the club circuit in the Midlands, we're on about £200 for a 4.5 piece.
A 4.5 piece?? Is one of your members only half-human (the guitarist?)? Or just less than reliable?
If you look at this lot, you'll see the one in the middle is a chapess, who in fact plays the keyboards. As the keyboards aren't necessary for all of the songs, we economise by not having her standing on the stage when she's not playing.
 12.
1) How good do you need to be to get into one
Competent. Unless you're doing stuff with very complex basslines, but there aren't that many songs like that around. Bluff your way through the ones you're not that familiar with, there's only half a dozen bass lines in the world that people will notice you're playing wrong.
2) Is it worth doing, from a financial point of view? I'm not talking about thousands of pounds a night - if I could come away from a gig with fifty quid in my pocket every time that would be smashing. Are those the big leagues? I've got good enough equipment, I reckon.
On the club circuit in the Midlands, we're on about £200 for a 4.5 piece.
 13. About half a dozen ceilidhs (missed a couple as both bands were playing some nights) and 20-30 with the covers band. Did two or three acoustic duo ones. Also played in the house band and in the acoustic duo most Thursdays at the Roadhouse open mic nights.
 14.
I defend your right to dislike the Streamer entirely but I find it a strange comment that a Warwick or a Spector is 'clunky' or 'thick' around the top horn compared to a Fender as the latter is way thicker (front to back) than the former! I could be misinterpreting your definition of the thickness to mean the width but even then I think the Fender would be wider...
I mean the top to bottom thickness rather than the depth (front to back). The Streamer doesn't have a taper on the top horn which the Fender does - in fact, it gets thicker. Top - the sexy Thumb. Middle - the awkward Streamer. Bottom - the half-a-dinosaur-like Precision ("thin at one end, much much thicker in the middle, and then thin again at the far end" - Anne Elk). Note - I'm not saying that Fenders have thin top horns (far from it) but that they taper in a natural way rather than getting thicker and then thinner. Still, the poll results so far put the Streamer ahead of the Thumb, which just shows what a poorly evolved sense of aesthetics most bass players possess. No dinosaurs were harmed in the making of this post.
 15. The Squier Special 5 I bought for £100 or so was a pretty good buy (neck was a bit chunky for me and so I sold it when I got the Tsai). I think it's the same model (metallic black, not sunburst): Nothing outstandingly good or bad, just grey porridge.
 16. I'm a bit biased as I've got two Thumbs. Must admit that I didn't take to the shape immediately though. The Streamer I find rather clunky around the top horn area, as I do Spectors. I think it's because it's so thick and without the taper of something like a Fender or the additional featuring of a Rick.
 17. NYE do for us in a social club in Brum. Three different people telling us different things about times (one of them expecting us to do till the bar closed at 1.30, which wasn't the agreement at all), the club had a crap DJ in the other ground floor room and karaoke upstairs and charged £8 for us and were surprised there weren't more in, and we finished up doing 3 x 1hr sets with a break for the bongs in the third set (and I was just returning from the toilet after we'd stopped and switched the radio on when I heard the DJ next door unleash the bongs, two minutes early). Took the Trace 1x15 cab I bought recently plus the racked up Ashdown Superfly/Lexicon MPX100/Audio Technica wireless kit - must do some more work to get a better sound, had some clipping at various points in the chain. And I took the upright out for its first covers band excursion for a few months (it was fun playing Wonderful Tonight on it).
 18.
I agree. I've never understood mid-scooping. The mids are the best part of the sound!
I love my smiley face EQ. Am I actually the only bassist in the universe who does? Cuts through the mix and gives me lots of low-end rumble. Boosted mid just sounds weak and weedy.
 19.
I would advise buying a book - i used this one to more or less build from scratch - you don't have to follow exactly but it helps explain things - others have different books they have used - but this worked for me http://www.amazon.co.uk/Make-Your-Own-Elec...3445&sr=8-1
Copy of Building electric guitars by Martin Koch - £12 or so Girlfriend's face after seeing the book - priceless
 20.
Just for info, in case anybody's interested; seller of thru-neck 4001 a-like,Item 170181713050 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...F:IT&ih=007 did not accept my maximum offer of £200 - which is OK with me.
Right, who's going to offer him £150?
 21.
And finally, for the lovers of the weird, esoteric, and exclusive to Woolies in the late 60s/early 70s, a Teisco EB(?) which was probably sold as a "Top Twenty":
I'd forgotten about the Woolies guitars. I bought one - the six-string semi-acoustic. I remember there being a solid-body electric and an acoustic. I'm sure my brother bought one of the range too but can't remember what. I actually have the neck and body of one of the six-string solids knocking around in my garage - maybe I should stick it up on ebay in case anyone should want to restore one of these fine examples of junk.
 22.
I've been thinking about buying parts off of ebay such as a body/neck/pickups/hardware and assembling a fender type bass. Are there any problems associated with this? I've been told that the neck and body might not join up properly and throw off the intonation and alignment, is that true?
You could buy a kit, eg. this P-bass kit (which has got the wrong description on it). Though bits and pieces should fit together OK, as they should be made to identical standards.
 23.
FWIW the home made cab is a JBL design for a JBL 2226 which is what it is loaded with. It's good for 600W RMS.
How heavy is it?
 24.
alright, am new on here. im a new player, and fancied building a bass of my own. Have many of you done it before?
I've assembled one, but not done anything more ambitious than that yet - next project is the next stage, I've got a couple of Warwick 5-string necks which will be going onto a body which I'll be making myself. Are you talking about a complete build from well-nigh raw materials, or using some pre-built parts like the neck, or a pre-cut fretboard?
 25. Already mentioned - Money, Chain, Can't hurry love Not yet mentioned in the Queen ones are "Want to break free" (which we do segued onto the end bit of Chain). Boingy stuff - "Mr Soft" by Cockney Rebel In the heavy section, "Paranoid" - adds the variation to the song while Iommi's guitar remains invariant Disco stuff - "Just an illusion" by Imagination (Youtube has a live version) - discotastic! Hang on, it must be jazz, the bassist is wearing a beret... A bit longer ago - "Stand by me" by Ben E King Absolutely vital for the song - "Fever" by Peggy Lee
