1. I should be there - barn dance the preceding evening which I should have recovered from. Will probably bring the JD Thumb and possibly its fretless brother, and the Tsai 5-string. Maybe the Tsai 7-string too. And perhaps the MB200 so I can play hide-the-bass-amp. Is anyone likely to be bringing an Omni 10 or 10.5 along?
 2.

No. But you will need to screw through the side and into something as the sides themselves wont be strong enough. Makes sense to fix to some wood behind the sides that is already there.
Hmmm that doesn't sound too diy to me, I was rather hoping to be able to do it myself, but I can see your point.
Drill hole through body, take strings off, reach into body holding offcut bit of wood, screw strap peg through body into scrap bit of wood. You should only need a little piece, a couple of cms a side should do it just to spread the load.
 3.
but i was wondering more if anyone knew of any good shops in birmingham, other than soundcontrol????? preferably in a similar area.
City Music is just round the corner from Sound Control - go under the railway bridge and turn left and it's a couple of arches down. There's a few along the Smallbrook Queensway, a couple of kilometres away from Sound Control. There's also PMT, out along the ring road a bit. If you go further afield, apart from the Crack Converters (apparently the Kings Heath one is quite good, keep meaning to drop in there), there's the Music Exchange in Stirchley which often has good stuff in. He had the nicest Squier Strat I've ever played in there a while back (a sampler made by a Korean factory when they were touting for business from Fender).
 4. +1 for Si's advice. I revamped our websites, concentrating on the barn dance one, using a lot of his advice (was precluded from using all of it as I didn't have the necessary material) and last week got four enquiries which have led to at least two gigs (maximum would have been three as two of them were for the same time on the same day). Still got some tweaking to do.
 5.
Looking at this one. Anyone have one? Opinions? Anything better?
I've got one, though I don't use it for gigging. It works. However, it does require a bit of care when putting an asymmetric bass on it (ironically, my Warwick Thumbs among them) as the rubbery bits are quite grippy, so the bass doesn't slide on them (not even with an oiled finish). So the way the bass is leaning when you put it into the stand is the way it will stay leaning. Plus I don't think you can leave basses plugged in if they've got edge mounted sockets (I'd have to check that though). Does keep the footprint small having them racked that way round, as opposed to having multiple A-stands on stage. You just need practice putting basses into the stand. Why don't you get a bass version of this instead?
 6. I can imaging the phone call to the design department now... "What the hell is this that you've sent me?" "It's the scaled up version of that model you sent us" "Idiot! That was a piece of sky out of my jigsaw puzzle! The design was on the back of the fag packet that was in the envelope!"
 7.
I emailed him yesterday and got exactly the same response. He must have a mailing list of people he's sending it out to that've pointed out his faux pas.
He's revised the description now to say that. Pricing's a bit optimistic innit?
 8.
Make sure you turn the tweeter off on that Epi, and boost your low mids, while cutting a bit of your treble. If possible, try and get a set of flats, or at least make sure your rounds are dead enough.
Putting several pillows in front of the speaker should help too.
 9. In an emergency the barn dance band could get on without me (not as good as with me, but they're not completely prevented from playing), though I now tell each band when I'm gigging with the other to try and avoid clashes.

 11. That's the perfect finish for that hideous Danelectro in the other thread...
 12.
just a small query... I'm getting an amp that's 2ohm/4ohm switchable. both of my cabs are 8ohm so to use my amp I'm only going to be able to do it when I take both cabs out and run them in series to up the resistance to 4ohm. I'd rather sell one of the cabs and get a 4ohm cab so I can use it singularly.. but what about running a 4ohm and 8ohm cab in series? or parrallel?
First, you'd need to run them in parallel, not series, to get them to 4 ohms. If you ran a 4 ohm and 8 ohm in parallel, the impedance would be 2.7 ohms, so I imagine you could do that with the amp switched to 2 ohm (not having dealt with switchable amps, I'm not sure how exactly you have to match the impedance, so check the manual).
i think so, it was bass and keyboard with a female vocalist, i didnt realise there were 2 forums. at the BOTB i saw you play
Ah right, I played guitar, keyboards, and bass at that one, just to show my enormous versatility... http://www.tamworthbands.com/ is the one for the, er, elder statesmen of Tamworth...
 14.
I guess a shop always has to have items on display otherwise no-one would come in, and these are bound to get scratched/damaged but a bit surprised they would not budge on the price. Anyone else had a similar experience to me on this type of issue?
Sound Control in Brum have exactly the reverse system - there was a section where instruments that had either been hanging around for a long time or had damage to them were put for people to make offers on them. Got a slightly scratched Squier Precision Special 5-string from them for a fair bit off. They had other stuff like effects and amps in there too. I'm not sure whether everything's been sold from there now or if the section has been moved, didn't see it last time I was in.
 15.
What I would like from you boys is 200 songs where the Bass is a lot less difficult than guitar.
Everything by U2. That must be 100+. But you'll be better off leaving.
 16.
Now he reckons he's almost complete: Ibanez Steve Vai signature 7-string Ibanez JS1000 Joe Satriani signature Schecter Synnyster signature Epiphone Zakk Wylde signature Epiphone acoustic
Hasn't anyone signed his Epiphone acoustic yet?
 17.
Andy's playing with The Smiths was a thing of beauty. To me it was as important a part of their sound as Johnny Marr's guitar playing.
The only trouble is that listening to his bass playing also means subjecting oneself to Morrissey, so I'm afraid I won't ever get to appreciate it...
 18.
Just to play devils advocate, even for a moment, I quite like the look of the headless model. However, the instant you start to look at the design you realise how totally impractical it is. How on earth is it supposed to stand up without knocking the tuners out of position, and your strings out of tune with them? Even if they were locking, who wants their bass resting entirely on their tuning heads?
To quote from the4 specifications (you did all read the specifications, didn't you?): "Including Warwick "User Kit", 1 extra EMP string set, 1 Ltd. Edition Signature Sheet, 1 Body Chest Bow, 1 Bass stand" The words "bass" and "stand" may provide a clue. As there's some sort of brass socket right on the midline of the body at the end between the tuners, possibly said bass stand consists of a short stick on a base, which plugs into said socket in a Freudian fashion. I initially wondered if it was so you could emulate the Dean Pace fretless-onna-stick with it. I must say, when I first saw the Nobby (or photos of it, anyway), years ago, it struck me that it was an ingenious way of minimising the need for special parts. Trouble is, as Warwick are doing a reissue, they can't really rework it to reduce the splay on the tuners and inset them into the body (like more spaced-out Steinberger ones), or do anything about that horrible sticky-out strap bar. Perhaps it's time they did a headless Thumb, like they originally intended... Oddly, I can't see links to any basses other than the rather nice-looking Star Bass (2 links to that), the Nobby, and the Streamer LX (2 links to that), although there's some 6-strings on the photo at the top that I assume there should be links to too.
 19.
I had a go on one of these on the Ashdown stand at the London guitar show last year. They look and play great - I'm just not sure I could live with that headstock!
No sign of them in the Brum Sound Control. I can see the logic of the headstock, but I'm sure they could have achieved it more elegantly (cf. the Parker Fly).
 20. http://www.upce.org.uk/ The FAQ for the uk.people.consumers.ebay newsgroup. The first section is about the newsgroup itself, so is probably of little interest to most forum members, but the latter parts cover buying and selling.
 21.
how heavy is it?? any chance this could get itself to bristol??
The combo is 44kg according to the only specs I could find, and of course there's the amp sleeve too - around 45kg anyway. I could deliver it to Bristol for £50 - if you know of a courier who would take it without it having to be wrapped, that would be fine by me. As Overwater#1 has pointed out, it's up on ebay now - we really need the room (sadly, the room freed up isn't allowed to be filled up with more basses...)
You'll need a brace .. Fretted and fretless
A twin-neck would be simpler, don't have to swap basses between songs then.
 23.
A long, long time ago (in the middle of the "Troubles") I was playing in a Working Man's Club band. We did a gig in an Irish club in Neasden and at the end we said good night. The manager rushed up hissing... "Play the Anthem"... so we duly started... he came running back shouting this time, "Stop! Not that one you eejits!!" Not thinking, we had started "God Save The Queen"!!
It could have been worse, you could have played "The Sash".
 24. Are they webbing with a big neoprene pad, or webbing with a length of neoprene inserted? The implication in the Strap's description is that it'll boing up and down, which I'm not sure is what I'd want. Also, does the grippiness of the neoprene help with neck dive at all?
