1.
Just for intonation mabbe?
It would appear so, but done that way because of the unique bridge arrangement. See towards the bottom of this review: http://101basses.com/new-atlansia-breeze-bass-the-newest-bass-guitar-from-h-noble/ Although on the diagram it's described as "pitch adjuster", adjusting the pitch with it would seem to alter the intonation. I must say it's rather an ingenious approach to the issue with strings coming over the bridge - with a B string with windings all the way to the eye, you either have to kink the string or put up with it bulging over the bridge.
2.
What strings do you use? Is there a proper 10-string set or do you have to make one up?
I made one up from D'Addario strings. 8-string sets are available, as are 12-string - 10-string are rather less common.
3. Using a wireless, secure transmitter to belt, switch off to change, unplug and swap, plug in and switch on. Using a standard lead, either I use a switched jack (but make sure that the switch operates cleanly and reliably) or switch my multiFX into tuner/mute mode. And the straps stay on. Quicker and less fumble-prone than keeping the same strap.
4. Are the Digitech and Zoom designed to work with line-level as opposed to instrument-level signals? There's a significant difference.
5. Peavey are also worth looking at - the Grind for passive and the Cirrus (BXP rather than USA) for active. Narrow string spacing and shallow neck.
6. I own a Dean 10-string which I find pretty good. Neck is a bit chunky though. There's a bit of neck-dive on it but a suede strap provides enough anti-slippage to obviate that. I've played on a Schecter 8-string ages ago which IIRC was very playable (the Stiletto Studio-8).
7. I don't understand why the red one has tuners at both ends.
8.
Half fretted. Half fretless.
All fretless - those huge great things are inlaid lines. Built by someone with no sense of aesthetics or pitch.
9. Queen by Queen. Like Led Zeppelin but with more talented musicians.
10.
That would need a hammond organ to sound [s]anywhere near right[/s] exactly like the original though.
There, I fixed that for you.
11. Partysounds.co.uk. Drop in to Robannas, Fatback, etc and put "bass player available" adverts up on the noticeboards. Same with the shops - City Music have a noticeboard, I'm pretty sure PMT do too.
12. Hocus Pocus by Focus. Probably better remembered than Sylvia. Tricky for your guitarist to play everything that the world's greatest ever guitarist managed to put into it though, but I doubt most people would notice.
13. And another one from me. That is to say, it's the first one from me and it's another vote, for the avoidance of doubt.
14. For the sort of music that the OP wants to do, I'd be inclined to go to open mic nights rather than folk clubs. I've done both, around the Midlands, and the typical open mic night is rather more relaxed - in the folk clubs, everybody is absolutely silent while you play, won't even come back to their seats if they've gone to the toilet or bar until you've finished a song. I used to find that a little unsettling.
15. I use PVA. It doesn't need to be a super-strong bond, just has to hold the nut in position.
16.
Alright Now is one of those songs that lots of bands play and almost none of them do it properly (and by "properly" I dont necessarily mean a carbon copy but with the right chords and the right feel and dynamics).
And none of them know that it's actually All Right Now. Guitarist in one of my bands refused to do anything like Rio or Take on me, as he said he'd heard enough cheesy 80s bands when he was at university. But he wants them up and dancing, and there's a better chance of that with that sort of material than with "Basket Case", "Underdog", or "Last Nite" (all songs we do because he wants to).
17. My Sei Original 5 has an asymmetric neck and it feels very nice. None of my other basses do (4s, 5s, 6s, and a 7) and they almost all feel very nice (the ones that don't are waiting to be sold...).
18. I must confess to being accidentally one of those sort that are being held to contumely in this thread. I was at my first Basschat bass bash in Northampton a few years ago, and asked a young lady who she was with. Fortunately she held her temper and explained to me that she was a bassist. In my defence, I had gone there with my band's USP, Mrs Zero the singer, and was in an accompanying-female mental gear. Can'r remember who said female bassist was now, she was around at the same time as AM1, Shara 5-string and Zoe BillySheehan but wasn't any of them.
19.
Contrary to some opinions people are expressing by implication , using better quality power cables can in certain instances make tangible improvements to the overall sound quality on some audio equipment, including bass amps and cabs. Have the people who are scheptical about the effects of cables actually listed to an A/B test and heard the difference? I have, and can attest to the fact that in a lot of cases better cables can bring out a pretty dramatic improvement in overall sound .
Yebbut you're mentally deranged.
20.
You can't get a lead for £1.50!
A quick look on That Ebay found me a 2m mains to IEC lead for £1.85 free delivery. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400587074375 So a little above £1-50. However, I certainly wouldn't want you working in a buying department. Er, would you like to buy this £20,000 [s]kettle[/s] mains to IEC lead?
21.
When I buy something secondhand, I expect it to be delivered by Jennifer Anniston, naked, on a unicorn. I'm usually disappointed. She never brings a lead
She uses the lead for reins. Didn't you notice?
22.
This might help. 22 power cable shoot out ;-) http://www.head-fi.o...-cords-reviewed
Is audiophilia actually some sort of mental illness akin to paranoid schizophrenia? The only more deluded reviews of cables that I've read have been of HDMI cables (where the reviewers actually believe that a cable carrying a digital signal can affect the analogue interpretation of that signal).
23.
Unequivocably, an amp should come with a power cable. How could it be argued otherwise ? The power cable is part of the amp. It's the part that connects it to the mains.
Then it should also come with an instrument cable. The instrument cable is part of the amp. It's the part that connects it to the instrument. Oh, and a speaker lead if it's not a combo. The speaker cable is part of the amp, it's the part that connects it to the speaker.
24. I said no because I wouldn't expect someone to put a power lead in. If I'm selling, I include a power lead if I remember to but I regard that as a courtesy rather than an essential part of the transaction.
25. I still have memories of old curly leads that crackled whenever you moved. Or breathed, come to that. Wireless for me. For one thing, you can turn through 360 degrees without looking like you are some sort of S&M participant.
