1. If you can pick up a second-hand RS112 for a comparable price, you miyght find that worth going for. I've used one for quite a few club gigs with a medium-loud drummer and never pushed it.
2. My Warwick JD Thumb 4-string. I've gone over to 5 strings now but it would take something very special to induce me to sell the Thumb. The neck is lovely (that's what sold it to me) and the sound has that rich complexity that you can only get from twin pickups (and not all of them at that). Reading this triggered me into getting it off the wall and having a little play, and I've fallen in love all over again.
3.
OK so I've had a chance to review the results and they're definitely interesting and may even be relevant to other active discussions. We had just over 350 responses which was great and provided an insight for us who was actually engaged with the site at the time the survey was open.
I was engaged with the site. I didn't see anything about the survey. Anyone who doesn't frequent Off Topic (or use Facebook or Twitter to find out about the contents of an internet forum, which seems rather counterintuitive) is unrepresented in the survey.
4. In: Status Series 1 5-string Zoom MS-60B Line 6 G50 Out: GK 200MB combo Mrs Zero, if I don't get some basses sold
5. Zoom B3 and expression pedal, or one of the Digitech BP series other than the BP50.
6. http://jeanbaudin.com/bassgear.html It's the first one on that page. As for a name, some would call it a bass, some an ERB, some an ironing board, and some an aircraft carrier.
7. Presumably he puts a lot of thought into dressing up so that it looks like he hasn't dressed up. Imagine how many fans he'd lose if he went from being "black T-shirt man" to "white T-shirt man", and becoming "colourful T-shirt man" would completely wreck his career.
8.
An used Conklin GT7BD is 1000 times better than those things. If you can live with the tight spacing it could certainly be a keeper.
Having played both an Antoniotsai 7-string and a Conklin one, I'd disagree with you. I really didn't think much of the neck on the Conklin.
9. No, all that the positive/negative thing does is ensure that with multiple speaker cabs, they're all in phase. From your description, I'd be looking at the power supply first.
10. Ending an auction on Christmas Eve Making it collection only http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Line-6-pod-xt-/131074873396
11.
I would play one on stage if I lived in the future, when no doubt designs like this will proliferate, but to be honest with you, I'm not really even living in the present. Never mind embracing change, I'm still trying to come to terms with the fact that I am going to have to pay the Poll Tax. Stainless steel basses is a bit too much for me to take in .2013 is a bit too much for me to take in .
You could cover the stainless steel bass in <Blue Peter>sticky back plastic</Blue Peter> for that full-on retro look and feel. Combine the third millennium with the 1960s.
12. Antoniotsai - inlaidartist on That Ebay. Mind you, you need to look on ebay.com to see his stuff. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380793743372 for an example but I wouldn't pay $1000, I'd either wait for an auction or try an offer of $400-$500.
13.
Just for intonation mabbe?
It would appear so, but done that way because of the unique bridge arrangement. See towards the bottom of this review: http://101basses.com/new-atlansia-breeze-bass-the-newest-bass-guitar-from-h-noble/ Although on the diagram it's described as "pitch adjuster", adjusting the pitch with it would seem to alter the intonation. I must say it's rather an ingenious approach to the issue with strings coming over the bridge - with a B string with windings all the way to the eye, you either have to kink the string or put up with it bulging over the bridge.
14.
What strings do you use? Is there a proper 10-string set or do you have to make one up?
I made one up from D'Addario strings. 8-string sets are available, as are 12-string - 10-string are rather less common.
15. Using a wireless, secure transmitter to belt, switch off to change, unplug and swap, plug in and switch on. Using a standard lead, either I use a switched jack (but make sure that the switch operates cleanly and reliably) or switch my multiFX into tuner/mute mode. And the straps stay on. Quicker and less fumble-prone than keeping the same strap.
16. Are the Digitech and Zoom designed to work with line-level as opposed to instrument-level signals? There's a significant difference.
17. Peavey are also worth looking at - the Grind for passive and the Cirrus (BXP rather than USA) for active. Narrow string spacing and shallow neck.
18. I own a Dean 10-string which I find pretty good. Neck is a bit chunky though. There's a bit of neck-dive on it but a suede strap provides enough anti-slippage to obviate that. I've played on a Schecter 8-string ages ago which IIRC was very playable (the Stiletto Studio-8).
19. I don't understand why the red one has tuners at both ends.
20.
Half fretted. Half fretless.
All fretless - those huge great things are inlaid lines. Built by someone with no sense of aesthetics or pitch.
21. Queen by Queen. Like Led Zeppelin but with more talented musicians.
22.
That would need a hammond organ to sound [s]anywhere near right[/s] exactly like the original though.
There, I fixed that for you.
23. Partysounds.co.uk. Drop in to Robannas, Fatback, etc and put "bass player available" adverts up on the noticeboards. Same with the shops - City Music have a noticeboard, I'm pretty sure PMT do too.
24. Hocus Pocus by Focus. Probably better remembered than Sylvia. Tricky for your guitarist to play everything that the world's greatest ever guitarist managed to put into it though, but I doubt most people would notice.
