I thought his Precision v Jazz one was pretty tentative. There was a slight difference but nothing a bit of tone tweaking wouldn't sort. Adjourns to specially strengthened Fenderista-proof bunker
I didn't bother watching the video. There are so many other, more rewarding things I can do, like washing my hair or picking my nose. However, I will say that any comparison between P and J is a comparison of single and twin pickups (unless you're like Dave Swift, who sticks all his twin pickup basses onto "neck pickup only"). The twin pickup sound is inherently more complex than the single pickup sound as there are assorted reinforcement and cancellation effects between the two pickups which the single pickup doesn't have. Neither sound is superior to the other, they just have different characters.

If I had a case for every bass and guitar, there wouldn't be any room in the house for me (and, more importantly, Mrs Zero). Most of the basses live hanging from walls. The ones I use regularly (two) sit in cases, as does my Variax guitar and one acoustic guitar (and the Esh Poseidon V which I really must get round to selling). There are two cases upstairs to transport any ad hoc basses I may want to take somewhere. The neck of the 7-string is too wide to fit in a hanger, and I've run out of space for hangers anyway.

My back pain issues aren't weight related, so may not be relevant, but I use a stool on stage (not all the time, but it's always there if I need it). You might try sitting down when the pain starts kicking in, and if it helps, look at getting a stool (Kinsman/Harley Benton - incorporate a guitar stand too).

I skipped the last four pages, but I did read the first six and almost lost the will to live. Maybe I'm very strange, but I read tab and ignore what it tells me about position. I play 5-string, so generally just add 5 to the fret number for a start, then mentally jig things around until the fingering makes sense. So I finish up using the tab to tell me the notes to play, and work out the fingering for myself. Once upon a time I learnt standard notation, but that was 45 years ago and on the treble clef. I've just been learning "Sylvia" by Focus, and finished up writing the notes down from an almost-accurate tab. Ironically, 44 years ago (soon after I'd learnt and forgotten standard notation), when I thought I was a guitarist, I bought the sheet music for "Sylvia" and in order to play it, worked out what the notes were and wrote them down on the score.

Relax - Frankie Waterfront - Simple Minds With or without you - U2 And one which is a brilliant bassline for a song that we're doing in the prog covers band that I still can't quite play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OznS7X9BOxs
As I keep saying "amps didn't get better, they just got lighter" - nobody sells a TE because it doesn't perform
I did. The fact I later bought a second one, then sold it again, just shows I'm a slow learner.

BF Gen 4 cabs - not anytime soon but a new BF Amp may be!
tauzero replied to Al Krow's topic in Amps and Cabs
Any other deal-makers or breakers on the amp front? Throw your thoughts down here and I shall read and think and ask questions. The amp design is already a long way along (and has come from what I want as a bassist and also what I see other bassists wanting/needing) but nothing is yet fixed in stone - I'd hope I haven't missed anything but you never know!
I thought that the programmable graphic EQ on the Ashdown Superfly was an excellent idea - let down somewhat by the power amp section. There's a pedal with something similar now available - http://www.sourceaudio.net/products/toolblox/programmable_eq.php which looks like it was designed for guitars and the bass bit was put on as an afterthought. Are you going down the graphic EQ route or one of the others (parametric or conventional)? -
BF Gen 4 cabs - not anytime soon but a new BF Amp may be!
tauzero replied to Al Krow's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'm excited about it! Looking back through our records, we actually started the amp project in 2011 but it got going properly just over two years ago.
How many hefts will you be fitting it with? And will they be the right class of heft? -
Reviving a zombie topic - looks like Status aren't doing these any more. Are there any other nylon tapewound which compare with the Status ones, and at a not-dissimilar price?

I use a Stagg UPC 424 (currently has my B3 plus expression pedal in it, the B3n is going in shortly). https://www.gak.co.uk/en/stagg-upc-424-pedal-case/33153 I fastened the B3 plus the expression pedal to a sheet of ply using the fixing brackets you can find on That Ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEDAL-LOCK-Tour-grade-pedal-board-fixings-with-screws-in-black-/332341610248 and velcroed that into the lid.

I used to play fretless for everything. I think the only song we did that was originally on fretless was Kayleigh. I really don't care.
I tried the new TE Elf at the LBGS and though I wasn't given a great deal of time to give it a thorough going over I was sufficiently impressed to place an order with Bass Direct after the Barnes & Mullins rep, Mark Hedge, advised they were due to arrive in the UK "at the end of March, if not, then end of April."
So, that would be a Class D, then?

So...why haven't you got a Trace Elliot then..
tauzero replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
Now with quality gear (remember to buy the British stuff) at such ridiculously low prices why doesn't everybody have some TE in their arsenal?
I have had, on more than one occasion. The second and third times were because I can be a slow learner. Overweight, didn't sound great. Vastly overrated. That's TE, not me. -
I don't know what it will do, as I was unaware of amps using MIDI data (will have to read up on that one), but it will not work along the lines you described earlier. The MIDI THRU will only pass on the MIDI data it receives at the MIDI IN port - without converting it to working sound.
The Ashdown Superfly used MIDI data but that was to adjust the EQ.

Would it be feasible to wind your own inductors? Presumably you'd just need the right gauge wire and the right diameter former, and to know how many windings you'd need?

Just catching up, and looked at the relistings for this - interesting pricing policy, down to £255 at one point and now rising again, up to £295 now.

Great TV Theme tunes and Credit to them Bass players.

Being a lover of TV detectives, I have to mention http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtvdtOZyl2I which has a middle 8 I didn't know about and the absolutely magnificent http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u20sVtCxf_8 which also has a middle 8 I didn't know about. Incidentally, AIUI, the theme tunes for earliest episodes included the murderer's name in morse code too. And there's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7L2PVdrb_8 -
How to build a dream bass for only $150 as long as you have several $k worth of tools, a handy workshop to use them in, a friend with a CNC and the ability to draw detailed shapes with a dremel by hand
And very limited dreams.
Don't knock it. Glen Miller discovered his "big band sound" through an accident with a horn player and a music stand. The horn player was going to sit down, his his horn into his teeth as it hit the music stand. From there on the trumpet player took over the horn part and "Big Band" was discovered... not a a lot of people know that.
I'm impressed that the trumpet player knew clarinet as well, and indeed that the horn player had decided to play the trumpet. If the myth is true, the trumpet player hurt his lip and Miller put the clarinettist in to play the trumpet part. If the myth isn't true, Miller decided that a lead clarinet would differentiate his sound from everyone else's.

What period/style of music inspired you to start playing?

70s rock - glam rock, then prog, and heavy metal. Loved (and still love) Marc Bolan's work in Tyrannosaurus Rex and T Rex. -
"He has no internal rhythm" - how can you teach this?
tauzero replied to JimBobTTD's topic in General Discussion
It's not just about the 1, it's also about the word that the 1 hits, which isn't necessarily the start of the line. The vocal line often has a couple of words before the 1 - "well you WALKED into the party/like you were STEPping onto a a yacht" for example. Mrs Zero used to complain that most of my songs featured that, then I pointed out that half the covers we did also did that.
