The Jags and Mustangs still, however, look like the girl you end up dancing with at the party when in fact you really fancied the friend they arrived with.

Coldplay are beyond rubbish obviously. . but then. . .

And then you're only a short step away from this sort of thing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc_FddyNJY0 -
This is going to be my big problem at the next one I'm off to. Speaking to the band leader on the phone he gave the strong impression that the band was as much a social thing as anything and 'rehearsals' frequently went to 5 hours. I haven't been in this type of band environment for a long time and as they are complete strangers and, looking at some youtube clips, about half my age I think this will end up being the stumbling block on both sides.

About "naming and shaming" - my thread as well as in general
KevB replied to BassTractor's topic in General Discussion
Actually if I ordered something (not necessarily a bass or even music related) and it turned up and was genually a woeful example compared to what it should be I'd relish the prospect of getting into a dialogue with the MD of the company in person on a forum to seek a resolution. Music manufacturers may be unusual in their accessibility in this respect. What would be the chances of personally getting in touch with the MD of a major car manufacturer if you ended up with a real dog off the assembly line? -

New headphones- Sennheiser HD205 II- A small review from Milton.
KevB replied to MiltyG565's topic in General Discussion
I picked up a pair of HD201's through Amazon when my last pair of (not Sennheiser) phones fell apart. They were under £20 delivered and I find them absolutely fine for general use. -
He's had a long and intresting career. Shame his condition will cut his career a bit short. An old mate of mine saw him in concert a couple of years ago and said he did get a little 'lost' in one or two song introductions but got through it like a trooper. I think some of his children were in his backing band.
I like musicals as film and cheese is usually an important part of it. I don't know about Rock Of Ages because Tom Cruise is fairly near the top of my list of actors I just will not watch under any circumstances, so I can't answer your question. I'm sure someone less discerning will be along in a minute to help you out. .
Yay, someone else with some sense of reason and taste when it comes to film! Just about bearable in Interview With a Vampire but generally to be avoided at all cost.

Good song, written by David Gates about his dad after he died IIRC. Didn't see the prgramme but might check it out in iplayer.

Most hateful song on your covers bands set list?

If it's feasible to do 20-30min slots there may be jam session/open mic nights that you could keep playing at, they often have a 4 song limit anyway. As others have said, other possibility is interspersing keys (maybe with bass foot pedals) in the set so you only play bass guitar every 3rd or 4th song, could get a set out that way especially if it was an originals band doing music you have written yourself so not obliged to be on the '2x45min set' covers treadmill..

Just bought a set for £4.99 delivered, not put them on yet. See 'string longevity' thread for details. Might be utter garbage of course.
Indeed - always helpful, pretty direct (he once told me to get my fingernails cut or my tone would always be crap!)
Did he preface this with 'As I was saying to that Geddy Lee fella the other day' Mind you, he could have a point...
'How Long' by Ace was always a lowlight of the set.
There's a guy at the Greyhound jam sessions on Sundays that always does this one. The backing band eventually started using it as an excercise in how many different styles and time signatures/tempos they could get it done in before the end of the song. Singer took it in good spirit though! -
Still a bit confused as to why TV ads, themes and show tunes are an 'unlikely source', from my experience there have always been strong basslines in these areas. Also check out some of the soundtracks from 70's 'blaxploitation' films. Funky as hell. Someone bought me a copy of the 'Superbad' compilation a few years back and though it's not really my preferred genre there are some cracking tunes on it.
You give love a bad name- Bon Jovi
Used to really enjoy doing that in a band I was in, mind you that was about 8 years ago. I think we did a pretty hot version of it though, had an excellent guitarist and singer originally so it was easy to get drawn along with it. I've played or jammed a worryingly high number on the 'hit list' so far assembled. But as someone pointed out wayyyy back in the thread, if audiences didn't like them they wouldn't stay on band's set lists. My next audition includes a healthy sprinkling of Coldplay and Stereophonics - nerves of steel, me! -
I guess with all the various combinations available it's inevitable you can come up with things that don't work if you keep swapping the variables often enough. I think they needed to do a bit more market research though, questionnaires to regular Fender buyers, bass forums and the like. Might have nipped it in the bud before it got to this stage. I like the Custom Shop job AndyTravis posted. If I was being picky I might go for the rear PU being a tad closer to the bridge and with through body stringing but it's a minor detail.

Your Musical Development since joining Basschat?
KevB replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Not so much basschat per se but going to the original bassworld meetings in Northampton (seems a long time ago now) and seeing the likes of Dood made me realise how pisspoor a player I was and I needed to take it up a notch or three. Unfortunately I'd also got to a point where I didn't really expect to improve much more and this has sadly proved to be the case. Still managed to be in gigging bands on a reasonably regular basis so maybe encouragement from the basschat bretherin has its own value irrespective of a player's shortcomings! -
I think what offends me most is the 51 headstock shape coupled with the 57 pickguard shape. IT'S AGAINST THE LAW! If only they had chosen a 51-shape pickguard then it might have looked halfway decent. In fact a 51-type pickup in the usual place and one at the bridge (with a 51-type control plate with THREE knobs on it) would have been pretty radical and quite impressive - if Fender hadn't completely f*cked-up by using a 57-pg which TOTALLY makes the thing look like a dog's breakfast...
Yes I think they would have to change where the knobs were if a 51 style plate were on. In their current position you would probably end up with maybe 1 knob or half a knob under the 51 plate and the other 2 to the left of it. Not to mention the knob shelling out good money for it in the first place

You'd be lucky to be in an originals band that gigged as often as a covers band so with a bit of time management it may be feasible to do both. Having said that, as someone pointed out, if your covers band haven't managed a gig in 6 months then it may be a sign that's not meant to be. I've just had to walk away from a project that was progressing at a snail's pace through one thing and another. Time's too short even at your age.

Picked up a pair of Sennheiser 201's for general use last year under £20. Wasn't expecting much but they are in fact really good value. No sign of anything breaking yet. My pet peeve with all the non in-ear designs is they seem to have gone back to the 70's/80's with the big ear enclosures. I always liked the simple Sennheiser designs with an open 'flat' speaker with a thin yellow foam sheet over it. Didn't find them uncomfortable and you don't get horribly sweaty ears in the summer!

I voted no even though I have a Bass Attack pedal in line to the amp. Never considered it to be an 'effect' really. I guess we all have our own definitions.

Is no band better than just any old band?
KevB replied to 4-string-thing's topic in General Discussion
They seem decent enough musicians, though with an ensemble like that it's a bit easier to 'hide'. As has been said before the provisional audition list may be back of fag packet stuff that they all know to try out new recruits with. -
Hmmm... I didn't mention thay they are part of a 9 piece Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band, who don't get many gigs
I suppose that might be this one then? http://www.ayntskynyrd.com/ I'm amazed a 9 piece tribute is financially viable, maybe this is why some of them are looking to gig in a more manageable set up?
