I saw them at the MK Bowl years ago and it was a good show but I think they have well peaked by now though they will put on a good professional show. MK isn't that huge a venue so didn't feel too remote, never seen a band in Hyde Park so have to go on what Dave says wrt poor view. Anyway with the money you will save Shell you can catch a whole bunch of decent acts at somewhere like the Robin2 which can't be too far away from you?

You do realise giving these kids headless basses or ones with one too many necks is just going to trauamtise them don't you

I'm surprised that we have "Timewasters" on BassChat

Rock-clubs in the UK? (other countries are of interest as well)

http://www.rock-city.co.uk/ They might get you on a multiband lineup or at the smaller 'daughter' venue next door; http://www.rescuerooms.com/ -
On the contrary I think it make sense him being allowed to get his little jam/marmite/whatever covered little fingers on the frets that his dad will never have to use in real life

The usual sites to try are partysounds, joinmyband, gumtree, musofinder, bandmix and the like. Try scouting out local jam sessions/open mic nights?

The last bass I sold I initially tried on here, not an expensive bass by any means. Got so fed up of the tyre kickers I put it on eBay, it sold no problem, buyer collected and paid cash. I got as much for it as I would have on here including the eBay fees (which admittedly were artificially low as it was one of their promotions when I put it up for auction). I'd really think twice about selling another bass on here I'm afraid. Had no problems buying stuff here but I go out of my way to make the transaction as hassle free for the seller as I can. -
Looks quite like a Schecter C4 I used to own, except for the price tag http://gearhounds.com/browseproducts/SCHECTER-C-4-BASS-GUITAR-ANTIQUE-AMBER.html

Unusual tuner arrangement, commonly these types have 2 on each side like the genuine Ovations, not sure I've seen a '3+1' on these type of designs before.

I wasn't aware how good a player Colin was until I saw him do San Fran Bay Blues as a solo piece at an Alexis Korner memorial concert in Buxton years ago. I'd seen him with Whitesnake but that was all. Quality stuff.
The guy in Hot Chocolate The guy in Pallas
If we're talking the white 'ric' in Hot Chocolate I think that's actually a John Birch lookalike I interviewed Graeme Murray before a Pallas gig in the mid 80's as I was doing a rock show on Hospital Radio at the time. I mentioned I'd recently started teaching myself bass and without batting an eyelid he asked if I wanted a go on his main gigging ric! I only played on it unplugged sat on the drummers stool but it was a cool moment.

Martin Gordon ex Sparks,Radio Stars and Jet!
KevB replied to theplumber's topic in General Discussion
Wouldn't worry about the obscure thing too much Martin, we discussed this on a thread recently and reckoned that 99% of the general public would probably only recognise McCartney, Lemmy and Sting from the bass playing community -
I have never heard of this person, who is he?
You see, I refer to someone as 'obscure' and up they pop out of the ether! Hi Martin!

Cartoon music - here's one for the Rush fans....
KevB replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
There was a song done by the band Saga called 'Amnesia' and it had this spoken quote in the middle of it that bugged me for ages trying to work out where it was from and that I'd heard it in my childhood. Turned out it was from the maid in the Tom & Jerry cartoons! -
Quick update. Panic over, band 2 gig tomorrow got pulled so not required now. Basically the band have a couple of residencies, one of which would be tomorrow night. However someone else booked them for a private party so band leader organised another band to do the residency in their place, venue were happy. Unfortunately venue didn't update their web site, people who had booked band for private party saw web site, paniced and cancelled the band and booked a replacement! The band leader could have just been a git and taken his residency back but felt morally obliged to let the replacement band do it which I think is very decent of him. I was quite up for it too but at least it gives me more time to nail the set before their next gig at end of Feb. In theory I'm still jamming with band 1 tomorrow afternoon so that'll do me for now.

The ad in the OP seems a bit bipolar and he wrote it on one of his off days. If I arranged a meeting it would be in a very public place. And I'd know where all the exits were in advance.

My next gig is with a band I haven't even met, never mind practiced with

Had the typical low end stuff when I was first teaching myself to play. An abused Columbus jazz with dodgy neck (shame as it was bound with nice MOP block inlays, sadly too wrped to be really taken seriously) though I later replaced everything apart from the body and turned it into a half decent instrument. Also early on had some red Hohner P type bass or other, that didn't last long either. In the more recent past (within last 15 years) the one that lasted shortest was the reissue Burns Bison. Bought on a whim to try something different, never got on with it. Doesn't make it a bad bass per se, it was just a bad bass for me

Depends to some extent where you are coming from musically though. Those creating their own music have a more 'personal' interaction with the music than hacks like me knocking out covers in pub bands. Thus i can see why those on the 'personal' side might have more of an odyssey to find their perfect sound. It's not that I don't care about my sound but I'm approaching it from a different perspective. I'm listening to material first played by someone else and though I don't slavishly try to emulate what's been done before I try to produce an overrall sound that's in keeping with the style of material I'm asked to do. If I was doing rock stuff with generally bright zingy sounding bass on it i wouldn't set my gear up in the same way i would if I was asked to do Motown with mostly softer edged 'thuddier' sounding lines, nor would i be necessarily using the same playing techniques either.
I've walked on stage carrying a ridiculous variety of basses over the last few years. Not one punter has ever come up to me afterwards and said "You looked really naff playing that". In all fairness, and for the sake of balance, I should also mention that not one punter has ever come up to me afterwards and said "You looked really cool playing that" either.
Not even with a Ric? I think that's the only 'cool' comment I've ever had wrt to basses I've played, though one band member commented how nice the finish was on the Schecter I had for a while.
Be careful with this one , fantastic tune , but you need to be up in the mix and quite bright , almost clanky and it makes you exposed , the song is not that awkward to play but the start needs the confidence , if you get a chance run their start through a couple of times so that you know who does what, where , if you are not expecting what they throw at you it could get a bit messy. I played along to the CD for ages and new it inside out ..... until the band tried it out for real , it took a few goes to get the start right .
Yes I think I may have to simplify it a little with all the other stuff I have to do. Thinking about taking my Ric to play it on to get some clank going (though i think Foxton might have moved on to P basses by the time they did this? not sure). As for the start I may have to wimp out a bit and let them do a couple of bars without me to get the feel of how they do it rhythm wise and come in on one of the 'D' notes of the intro/first verse.

Not sure if this'll come across as I want it to
KevB replied to Jimryan's topic in General Discussion
Yes the 'backwards' thing has worked for me in the past. I still can't play particularly quick without fudging notes together though, still marvel at players who can articulate all the notes whilst rattling through stuff. As part of a long set list I'm trying to learn at the moment I was wrestling with the Jam's 'Going Underground' last night and haven't mastered it yet but it will probably have to do for the time being. There was a very helpful tutorial on Youtube but I noticed at no point did the demonstrator play it at full speed and all the way through from start to finish. However there are other guys doing it on youtube over the original recording that seem to have it cracked so I guess I'll get there eventually. -
I'm just confused as to what murray played on. I know he did slide it in and 1987. Wiki says he played on all the albums but on that gig at donnington 1983 its not him on bass.
Murray definitely on everything up to 'Come an get it' in 1981. However he was not touring with them by the time they were promoting the next album 'saints and sinners' which is credited as 1982 but i think came out in 81 or if 1982 then very early like Jan or Feb. I saw them promoting that album and it was deffo Colin Hodgkinson on bass on stage (and cozy powell on drums). Murray probably is on the studio recording of saints and sinners. It is almost certainly Colin Hodgkinson on Slide It In. However there are 2 versions of slide it in, one for the USA market and one for UK and the mixes are different, whether there are actually different instrument tracks recorded on them I'm not sure. I recall that Jon Lord is virtually mixed out of the US version, more prominent on the original UK version. 1987 is possibly a bit of a mash up in that some songs from old albums were re recorded and it could be that Murray was drafted in to do some stuff but Rudy Sarzo might be on some tracks as well, he's on the follow up album 'slip of the tongue'. After that there are probably no end of session guys on subsequent releases and they've been through 3 or 4 bass players live in the last 15 years or so including marco mendoza, I lose track of them pretty much after slip of the tongue though I have the albums so i could scan through the booklets if i ever get chance.

Sadly there will always be those that talk a good game but can't pull it off live. The dreamers, the bedroom megastars (some of these are frequently excellent technical players but put them in front of an audience of more than 2 people and they turn into novices). Then there are those who won't put a shift in when it comes to the tedious but vital non musical aspects of actually keeping a band running. Fortunately I've not had to do a lot of auditioning but enough to know there's an amazing assortment of oddballs cruising through the want ads just itching to come and take your time up with no end product. At least it has given me the perspective to know what the other side is going through when I'm auditioning for someone else.
