1.
Oh ok, it looked like you thought he was talking bass strings don't matter
After using god knows how many different brands of varying prices over the last 20-odd years of playing I'm frankly not convinced they actually do make that much of a difference (as long as it is a sensible comparison eg roundwound vs roundwound not roundwound vs flatwound). I'd be interested for someone to set up a blind audio sample test with different manufacturers strings all of the same style and gauge and on the same bass run through the same rig played by the same player. Could we tell the difference between the £6 set and the £30 set?. Each set would realistically be run on the same bass for 6 months and played as often. One sound sample when freshly strung and another 6 months down the line to see how each set wears with equivalent use. Probably been done but not seen or heard the data personally.
2. If we are talking out of town then another one just a few doors down from Guitar Spot on Chilwell High Street is Crossplay Music (you won't find any Japanese slappers wearing tutus in there though, I've checked ). One of the owners died a few months ago and I've not been in since so not sure if it is being carried on seriously or not but seems to be open. As previously pointed out the whole road is under major reworking for the new tram route to go through it, I suspect some of the businesses just won't survive. The last time I went in a year or so back they had a smattering of basses but all seemed top price to me. Best of the bunch was a shop soiled G&L tribute but they were asking a lot even for that and it needed a really good set up. Guitar Spot is very guitar oriented and not worth the effort if it is purely basses you are after.
3. Keep meaning to get down to one of your jams but after a full day's work it's a bit of a drive... If you want to branch out to other jams you would always be welcome at The Greyhound in Beeston on a Sunday afternoon; http://www.greyhoundbeeston.co.uk/Greyhound/Welcome.html
4. It was 'Gear Acquisition Syndrome' though there may be a slight modification of that used these days.
5. Just enjoy the gig. The better the drummer is technically and the more experienced they are the easier they are to play with in my experience.
6. Pretty much as above, barely worth the effort any more I'm afraid. There is also that one on canning circus (music inn?) but not been in fir years. The last few times I've been in guitar and drum have resulted in a 5 minute scan of basses on offer and walked back out, nothing much of interest. There was supposed to be another shop a bit further out that way near magnet rehearsal rooms but never actually found it. Starting to get a good way out of town centre by then though.
7. If it is a valuable bass you need to check on the smallprint of the courier to make sure the general insurance they quote is applicable to musical instruments. Some companies make instruments exempt or only insure up to a nominal amount of £200 or so.
8. I had a 79 stingray but it had been through a hard life and I ended up replacing a lot of parts on it (some of which were already not original such as the PU and pre-amp) only to finally come to the conclusion that it really wasn't me and moved it on, made a substantial loss out of the whole process. I think at the time I had an idea of having one each of the usually quoted 'classic' basses but the 'ray was getting so little use in the end I couldn't justify keeping it.
9.
There is only so much bandwidth available - I'm wondering if the bass version shifts the compounder from being biased on the bass side to be being biased on the top end - hence a distinct treble roll off?
I didn't notice any significant difference in the signal I got with the Samson unit compared with a cable. There is a very low level 'white noise' in the signal which I found is only audible whilst practising alone, could never hear it at proper gigging volume.
10. One of the main features I needed when I switched from the Rover 25 was a fairly narrow car as I have a narrow driveway on the side of the house and the Note was one of the few that was as narrow externally as the Rover though they make remarkably good use of the available space internally. I also like the blacked out rear windows on my model so if I have gear in the back it is very difficult to spot by the casual passer-by.
11. I was amazed how much I could squeeze into my Rovers. Had a few metro types and then a Rover 25. Never owned any Fords. Had my current Nissan Note (at least it has a musically related name!) for over 3 years with no serious issues though it was a very low mileage second hander and good value. Good load carrier if not the prettiest of vehicals or oozing character. Always try to find a model that is way down the list of potential thieves hit lists.
12. I have used a Samson Airline (bass version) and have had no problem with the lower frequencies. In fact I'm pretty sure I used it in a band where we were doing one tune in drop D, again the signal came through fine. Not currently in use in my present band though that may change in future.

14. Know what you mean, I have 4 decent basses now which is really at least one too many for general covers bands. If the market weren't so depressed I'd let one go but I'm not going to take a big loss on it so it'll probably end up being back up to a back up
15. Oh you mean this kind of stuff.... Nipple-slip-tastic
16.
I was there! (well not literally at that gig, but I did see them around the same time) And I agree.
Yep, Bradford in 1981 for me. Budgie were one of the support bands and tickets were about a fiver. Once Gillan strode out centre stage in his denim jacket and usually white or red high heeled boots he had that crowd in the palm of his hands from first note to last. Would have liked to have seen Zeppelin in their full pomp around 76 but caught the heavy rock bug a fraction too late.
17. Here's the first serious rock band I ever saw. This, for me, is real stage presence. But you had to be there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjeIUpD9Emo
18. I'm sure I've chucked this into another thread a while back but I still like the bassline if little else... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZSMDaewz2A
19. But what if you are employed by someone to be their backing band? If the front man wants all the attention then it is your job to stay out of the way and generally keep a low profile isn't it?
20. One of our monthly residencies cancelled - bah! New management taken over venue and aren't commiting to live music until they are settled in. Hopefully we will get gigs back again there but too soon to tell yet. Oh well, 2 gigs next weekend will make up for it.
21. Robert Palmer's All Star Moon Dance Band All together now - 'It was 20 years ago today, that Bilbo first refused to play...'
22. Although I'm technically lefty I'm not sure how seriously lefty I am. Nearly everything I've picked up using two hands in a co ordinated manner I've done right handed (golf, cricket, bass playing) although I always use a snooker/pool cue left handed and used to hold raquets left handed. I'm right footed and hold a knife and fork right handed. However, I will alwys use a spoon left handed.
23. Best of luck for Sunday, hope it goes down well. Saw Juicy Lucy several years ago supporting Nazareth.
24. I can also vouch for the quality of US Fenders from this period. I have a 2001 P bass plus a Jazz and active P Deluxe, both from 2003 and they are all great players.
