1. Hello All, I just fell in Love with it as soon as I saw it on their website and after a mental wrestle with myself (buying blind, price, import duty, VAT, great piece, great price, etc!) and a few emails with the man here we are What we have here is the base model of the '59 re-issue P bass in terms of specs with the additions of a Custom Shop Jaco jazz bass bridge pickup, a Badass 2 bridge and a Chrome pick guard with Vol, Vol, Tone controls, a side mount jack socket and 70's TV logo. It is finished in Black Pearl, New Old Stock. I appreciate that this is a serious 'Marmite' bass but enjoy the pics! (more/better pics to follow in due course) Also the shop's page for it is: HERE Cheers, Jon. *UPDATE* I cleaned and re-strung it last night and wow did the fretboard clean up nicely. I used the Dunlop 2 part set and it has really brought the luster of that Madagascan Rosewood out!
2. LOL I hear ya, and I'll watch my mouth
3. I'm kind of with you on this one. Where I falter is that I can see the POV that, for instance, I could never afford an early to mid 60's Fender but could stretch to a Fender Relic/Closet Classic/New Old Stock instrument from the Custom Shop to look, sound & feel like a genuine older instrument. That said I have a bass that's just over 10 years old, that I've had from new, and it has been naturally relic'd which I much prefer the look of as I know I done all that wear and tear/damage! Cheers, Jon
4. Thanks Stevie. I won't mention that I occasionally look at Finnbass either then!
5. Cheers BassBod. I was reading similar things over on TalkBass!
6. Hello, I'm interested in how the bridge pickup sounds in comparison to a regular USA bridge pickup. If anyone has experience and can shed some light on it for me then that would be great, Cheers, Jon
7. WOW - Well done for tackling it with the the DB and injured hand Mate and glad it all went well. ATB
8.
Cheers Jon, I gather the rrp on these was hitting towards £1800 when new - not the cheapest Ray on the block...
Mine cost £1,600 to put some perspective on this deal!
9. BUMP for a stunning bass at a GREAT price. Wish I'd waited a few years before buying mine from new!
10. Lovely looking, playing and sounding bass. You should hear it amplified up to gig volumes! A treat for someone here.
11.
Just a thought. If you do stash a bass away, avoid the loft ! the temperature and humidity goes up, down and every which way, which can turn a nice playing neck into a twisted banana. Investment then = loss
+1 I'd go for Musicman20's theory of a 'Sunday best' bass along the lines of a late 50's/early to mid 60's Fender bass. Good luck! Jon
12. From what I understand the backing tracks are made by Producers with session Guys/Girls in the week. There's a Producer for each Judge/Category. The people that are on stage pretending to play along during the show are booked by the production company but whether that's through an agency or something similar I don't know.
13. Only just seen this thraed Interesting - will have a look at mine ASAP!
14. I can never decide myself so have collected nice examples of each over time!
15. Nice bargain for someone here. My 2 are absolutely wonderful and would like to bump this one as a result!
16. I would use the CTS pots & Switchcraft jack but with a different Capacitor. From doing this before I've found the Sprague caps to be pretty cheap and widely available...
17. Hi there, Where are you based in London? Regards, Jon
18.
...On the subject of refinishing, would it be counter intuitive to get a Road Worn and refinish it? I really like the spec of the 50s style telecasters and a road worn nitro finish would be easier to strip than poly.
I've wondered before if it's an option to overspray a HW1 instrument with a nitro colour of ones choice - a la custom shop Fenders. My concern was it would still wear/flake off easily so didn't bother in the end.
19.
Umm...yes. A few weeks ago..just a phone no in the window to contact Mr Manners for repairs. I know its not good for business, but they should mention it!
Just seen on their 'Contact Us' page it says "BATH STORE CLOSED FOR REFURBISHMENT, PLEASE CALL LONDON STORE!" Cheers, Jon
20. Loads of info here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=248 Cheers, Jon
21. I use my MarkBass SA450 into one of my Barefaced Compacts for recording. Marvelous sound! Incidentally last time I did record this setup the engineer said the mic on the cab was a better sound than the D.I.!
22. Very cool! What's that J position pickup in there?
23. I would suggest either the Wizard Trad or the S.D. Vintage too - Both will do what you require. My US P bass has the S.D SPB-1 Vintage in it and I'm well happy with it's sound... Good luck, Jon
