For me it's not the playing, but for certain gigs its the driving / parking / gear loading which I don't look forward to if it's extra hassle.
This is almost my thinking but I'm a bit more extreme. I personally love writing, rehearsing & recording in the band environment but aren't a fan of the gigging side of things. I have done loads of gigs all over the place and get into them at the time but am not a fan and find it stressful if I'm honest.
It's not a truly custom shape, I want a jazz body, a straight through neck with a p-bass profile?
I had Jon Shuker build me a Jazz bass with a bolt on P bass profiled neck and it's just beautiful. He does neck through construction too so shouldn't be a problem for him. Even better still you could do the 'build your own' Shuker course and get it done like that making it a bit more special. 3.
Has anyone here bought a USA Lakland direct and had it sent to the UK? How were Lakland to deal with? How long did it take? Did Lakland sort out the carriage? Did Customs charge you, and how much? Very tempted to go down this route, but would like a bit of reassurance from someone who has done it. thanks
Hi Malcolm, Sorry to waffle on without actually answering your questions! Anyway my experience went like this: a ) I bought my USA Bob Glaub from a shop called Cream City Music, via their eBay shop, who done a stonking deal on the bass & shipping, b ) With UPS - About 3 days to get from the States to East Midlands Airport then about 2 weeks there awaiting clearance, c ) The shop sorted it out on their account, d ) I can't remember the exact amount but it was about 22% of the cost of the bass & shipping total. As well as that experience I have imported a bass from a shop in New York City and it was pretty much identical in terms of time and costing. Hope that helps, Regards, Jon
 4.
I had a very very competitive quote a few years ago, but dont forget to factor in VAT at 20% including shipping costs, unless you are very quick, and Import Duty http://www.basscentral.com/lakeland_usa/lakland_494.shtml
Don't forget Bass Central's caveat of "While attempting to stay current, we intentionally leave many basses up even after selling them in order to act as "catalogue" pieces to show various models, wood and finish options that are available." Worth bearing in mind if you're thinking of using them. Not a problem unless you're in a rush to beat the VAT increase
 5.
@ Jon, yes, i guess it could be...but i wasnt aware that you couldnt buy direct from them anyway? they have prices on their site etc... sorry, if ive mis-guided anyone! j
No worries Jimi. Maybe they will ship here if you press them but I just checked my old email, from Brian Gingrich, and he pointed me to the UK Distributor at the time who was House Music/Bass Centre. I then contacted the Gallery and Alex there said they can order in USA Laklands...
 6. I was directed to a UK dealer when I asked - The Bass Gallery infact! Jimi was you getting them direct to do with being endorsed by them per chance? Regards, Jon
 7.
Not if you move over a few feet. At 4kHz the average fifteen is down 20dB at 45 degrees off-axis, compared to 10dB for the average ten. Of course if you put two tens side by side their dispersion is halved, so with that configuration they work no better off-axis than one fifteen anyway...
Hi Bill, This speaker & cab info you divulge to us is very interesting and I'm grateful for it. Am I right in thinking this is why the two 2x10" cabs stacked vertically is pretty much the ideal setup? Cheers, Jon
 8. I use two modern 1x15" cabs and the sound is all there up to 4kHz. They sound great in the band context and a single cab records really nicely.
 9. Thanks for that. It's more or less exactly what I need but I'm borassic at the mo. If it's still available when I've got some dough then I'll have it. Regards, Jon
 10. SK8, What are the controls labelled please? Either that picture is out of focus or my eyes are REALLY knackered
 11. It's on the WD Website see: HERE
 12. I would suggest a Wizard Thumper pickup with CTS 250k pots, a Sprague Orange Drop .047 cap, Switchcraft jack socket & cloth wire. The pickup can be bought direct from Wizard and the electronics from WD Music. I've done a similar project and can't recommend this stuff highly enough. Cheers, Jon
 13.
Oh dear, I imagine this is a very inexperienced producer then. He should have had an engineer taking care of business.
+1
 14. Very nice! I've a Honeyburst one and it's a beaut. I can concurr on the punchy sound these have. It's very Thunderbird like, probably due to the 2 'Thunderbird Plus' pickups edit: spelling (again!)
 15. For me John Paul Jones had the best job!
 16. As said on BassChat many times by our speaker cab gurus - Another cab of the same make & model as the one you have now will be the best match and have the best results. So I guess the Genz Benz STL 12T would be the one!
 17.
You won't get a lot of volume from it with a Barefaced compact.
Really? I'm very surprised at that as it's a pretty sensitive driver in there...
 18. Have a look through this lovely thread put together for just such instances! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=198
 19.
One engineer wanted me to go direct via a little bit of rack compression, then later, when I wasn't there, reamp it through a vintage Fender Bassman head. Once I had cleaned my sick off the floor, I explained I would be using my POD....
Love it Nige Yeah, Why not record the mic'd amp & the D.I. with the Sansamp? At the cost of just 1 more track, well worth it IMO. I tried mic'ing my Barefaced Compact with an AKG D25 and D.I'ing it last time I recorded and the mic sounded phenominal...
 20.
...I guess the answer is that they'd notice if we weren't there.
Off topic but very true.
 21. Oh just lovely to hear. Keith's Tremelo (?) guitar sound is marvellous iso'd!
 22. Pendulum's new one - Immersion
 23. I used to get the aching thumb and forearm but only at gigs. I found it was down to tensing up and gripping too hard (ooh er Matron!) due to adrenalin, excitement, etc. I found doing a light warm routine helped no end as well as being mindful of it while playing. Also the difference in neck widths is only a few mm so surely that won't make that much of a difference? edit: spelling!
 24.
Perfect rig.
Cheers Johnny! BTW my rattling bass turned out to be the E tuner & possibly 1 other...
 25. Looks like the Audio Kitchen 'Base Chopper' to me: http://www.audiokitchen.co.uk/ edit: beaten to it by Ghost_Bass!
