This and ultimately it's supply and demand that pushes the prices sky high on boutique basses. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that pretty much the case with Fodera, Alembic, Sadowsky, etc, etc?
And to answer the OP - They can be the best thing you've ever handled if it ticks all your boxes! The key is to definitely [i]make sure[/i] it ticks your boxes first...
