Should a dep be paid for a "freebie" gig?
steve-bbb replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
I'm normally an "anytime, anywhere" type player, but this type of sacrifice for zero return is beginning to wear a little thin. Do other bands who employ the services of deps pay them no matter what, even if it's a freebie?

So you are actually considering driving 250 miles and taking leave to do a gig as a favour for nothing? I wouldn't even have the balls to ask someone to do that, let alone expect it!
you appear to have set some sort of precedent and have three ish sort of options imho 1 continue the precedent and maintain the status quo 2 sudden bold dramatic u-turn accompanied by all the kerfuffle that this will undoubtedly entail 3 slow long drawn out u-turn hoping nobody notices too much hope this helps -
maybe get a few mates together for a jam and book a local rehearsal studio with the main intention of thrashing out these sort of issues - once you figured it out at volume you will be confident in controlling it in an audition or gig environment
Mouse mat has worked for me for years.
But what happens when the mouse comes asking for it back? -
Is this do you think, possibly affected/caused by the material you play? Are you choosing songs that are 'basic plodders' that every other band is doing or are you throwing in stuff that is a bit more technically challenging and complex? And if so are those more challenging pieces showcasing the guitarist or others? Could be contributory factors. Either way we all know don't we that punters just don't have a clue what bassists do and only other bass geeks will come up after a gig and compliment you on your playing anyways . Hope this helps

ok spin it around for a moment how would you feel if he described your playing as 'flaccid' ? now reverse that thought... hope this helps

which Squier are you beefing up? if its one of the cheap and cheerful affinitys like mine, and a J to boot, then you may possibly run into an issue as on the affinitys one of the cost cutting mechanisms was to place two neck sized pickups on the guitar instead of a neck and bridge where there is about 3-4mm diffference in overall length - easily solved with the judicious application of a nicely sharpened chisel all depends on how keen/capable you are with mods - personally im happy to attack my two squiers with all manner of mods but the status and trb i would hesitate and pass complex jobs over to someone with a bit more experience in such matter if tis a classic or vm you shouldnt really have any trouble just swapping the pickups over

seems to be a serial burglar with specialist guitar knowledge doing the rounds and possibly stealing to order as there has been quite a bit of 'similar' type thefts lately around kent lately
That's the first time I've seen Jazz From Hell described as progressive.
+1. IMHO I don't really think of anything by FZ that I could label prog, maybe Billy The Mountain or Inca Roads perhaps

Could someone explain DMX to me please?

Think MIDI, but for lighting! Hope this helps -
That goes some way to defining the perennial question, "what is Prog?". Lots of keyboards and a sh** vocalist.
Strange you mention this I was only just recently listening to Rick wakeman with Ashley holt on vocals Here's one for you ... Todd Rundgrens Utopia, The Ikon
When checking out a bass one needs to stop thinking one is being tested. The bass is being tested not you. Don't perform. Play every note on every string, Play octaves, play fifths. Use different pickups, play with the tone controls. Etc.etc.
Yup definitely this although I go a step further and also make it look and sound intentionally naff - extra points if you can get the shop assistant to roll their eyes

Farriers beer festival at Mersham, luckily we played in the main marquee in daylight on Saturday afternoon when it was nice and sunny - my commiserations to any fellow basschatters who were unfortunate enough to play the previous night in somewhat 'challenging' light conditions On a plus note though the sound system and team was good as always at this event and FOH sound was very pleasing Followed immediately by a gig in a marquee in a field in the middle of Kent which was very well attended by an enthusiastic crowd These two were proceeded by the Friday night gig at the horseshoes in East Farleigh which is a rather superb country village local pub and was the first live music event for them hopefully with regular events to follow So three gigs within 24 hours , now I have to catch up on all the domestic chores!

Don't forget too the shape of the sound as Kiwi mentions the attack is more responsive but the sustain and decay seem to go on for ever compared to the average wooden neck too on a bolt on graphite the sustain is immense but on the full through necks where the bridge is screwed directly into the graphite the sustain is absolutely ridiculous, which can be hindrance for some styles or genres but if your music demands longs sustained bass pedal notes with minimal decay and maximum sustain then a full graphite through neck is definitely the one for you

The simple solution is 'don't turn up'
