1. might be able to pick up a used peli case on gumtree something like this http://www.gumtree.com/p/tool-storage-workbenches/peli-1500-case.-unbreakable-watertight-dustproof-chemical-resistant-and-corrosion-proof./1092657879 they're a bit on the pricey side but they're indestructible will last way longer than anything else
2. Get him to buy one of these http://thdelectronics.com/product_page_hotplate.html it works with a fender twin cause i've seen it done (the club i work in has one in house) he needs the purple one but yes guitards don't like being quiet something about ego or something........
3.
I enjoyed using a pod when the engineer knew how to plug it in but mostly I got the "I'm not putting that through the PA, it'll blow it up with that
unfortunately a little knowledge is a very dangerous thing. in all walks of life people will repeat information that they believe to be true "because someone told me once" theres a lot of half truths floating about in the mystical world of pa systems with people who think they know what they're talking about, but when you press them it turns out they know pretty much nothing. first myth is that bass will somehow kill a pa system...... total rubbish!!! unless your doing something wrong i.e cliping preamps (which you would break a pa system even with just vocals) then bass is no different to any other instrument and can easily be handled by most pa systems right down to your little pub system that you take down the dog and duck on a friday night. it probably won't sound as good through your little vocal system compared to your amp, because your not going to reproduce the heavy lows that your amp will because bass cabs are tuned to reproduce the sound of a bass whereas pa speakers are not you don't need a crossover! you don't need a bass bin! i know i do it very often putting full band through a yamaha mixer and a couple of active JBL 15's with no sub and if you know what you are doing you can make that pa system sing! sorry for the rant gents but its one thing that really bugs me i'm off to gather up my toys now and have a lie down as you were
4.
All this DI before the amp stuff? Er, no. You're mic'ing the cab sunshine. I take no crap with this these days as I play to enjoy myself not to subsidise the fact that some muppet is deliberately screwing with me because he doesn't have a clue how to mix a band properly.
Unfortunately on a small stage with bass drums and guitar in close vicinity a mic on a bass cab is a hell of a lot more hassle than its worth your going to end up high passing all the thump out of it to get a useable sound. Unfortunately for us the fundamental frequencies of the bass mean that where you would roll off most other mics on stage to get rid of rumble you can't on bass which turns the bass sound into mush. this is why bass cabs mic'd up on big stages is common whereas in smaller venues its usually a d.i. with the best intention in the world you're actually just making your whole band sound worse by insisting on purely the sound from a mic i'll happily put out a mic for a bass cab if a bass player asks for it (using it is an entirely different matter) but 9/10 it will make a mix sound worse unfortunately the water rats has a special reputation for being a terrible place to gig for a multitude of reasons including the fact that they used to pay peanuts to their sound engineers resulting in them not really caring anymore...
5. trying to fight physics is a tough job even for the most talented of engineers with the best equipment in the world
6. http://en.mediamass.net/people/jack-bruce/deathhoax.html apparently a hoax
7. but lets face it the drummer is a dude edit. for anyone who hasn't seen this footage someone in the audience throws a frisbee on stage and he catches it mid song
8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVx2i6jGzf8 soul man by sam and dave duck dunn continues playing the verse groove for the first bar or so of the chorus 0.35 if anyones interested
9. nope nothing as far as i know of that says you can't do this must be in the checked in luggage though due to the strings. I've had spare strings confiscated at security from a hard case before pedals are fine in hand luggage as long as you can demonstrate they power up like any other electronic device now chris
10. £439 new so you can expect half to 2/3 of new price selling 2nd hand so £280 seems like a fairly reasonable price to me any more than that you might as well buy new with a manufacturers warranty ect.
11. pretty much what everyone else has said its down to the drums to keep it driving. I dep for a jovi tribute band so know the song note for note feel free to give me a pm if you'd like some help with it chris
12. something like this would fit perfectly plugs straight into your laptop via usb and works as a little recording interface could also be used as a spare mixing desk incasese of emergency http://www.gear4musi...CFbPJtAodsEoABA
13.
Well i'll be damned! I guess the playlist thing makes a lot of sense. So if i were to be approached say, I would point them in the direction of the landlord or manager of the venue?
you still need to provide a set list but yes its the Landlords responsibility to make sure he has all the proper licences ect.
14. Hi Lewis in short yes the EV is an active speaker i.e you plug it into the desk via an xlr lead and theres no need for a separate power amp i've gigged with them before however i found that competing against a whole band they lacked a little if you can possibly afford it then i'd suggest going up to ZLX15P as it just has that little bit extra headroom chris
15.
Are you talking about custom moulds on your triples? Or standard tips? If you are losing the seal whilst singing, the custom is not a good fit... If they are customs, did you have an open or closed mouth impression? If you are a singer, you should have had an open mouth impression. The second you lose the seal, you will lose your bass. What you are probably experiencing this time round, is a combination of the better seal... and more headroom in your bass frequencies with the extra bottom driver. You will be able to push the bass more before the driver gives up.
yeh they're moulded triples mate has an open mouth casting as i knew i was going to be singing and cool to be honest i'm not fussed i'll keep my triples for doing monitors for bands would just be nice to know what the difference is
16. also anyone had issues with moulds moving about and losing seal when your singing backing vocals? i've lived with triple driver moulds for about 9 months done various gigs on them (both as a bass player and an engineer) and had issues losing bass response when i'm singing backing vocals? i've just gone to a pair of these http://www.headphonix.co.uk/products/westone-4-r-series-quad-driver-premium-earphones and its a revelation completely cured the problem and sound better than my triple driver moulds, they reproduce my bass in a pleasing way and i'm noticing stuff in my reference tracks that i never did before. Has anyone else had a similar experience or am i just noticing the extra driver?
17. i've used these a couple of times and got one quite well with them they're pretty good not a patch on the top of the range stuff (which i'd advise you to buy as you get what you pay for) however if £200 is your budget then this will get you started http://www.thomann.de/gb/ld_systems_mei_1000_838_mhz.htm
18. taken my tu 1000 on the road with me this weekend after my polytune let me down forgot how ridiculous and glorious this thing is
19. but yeh awesome gig apparently he learned the set in a week! on any gig thats a tall order but for toto thats some supreme bass playing
20.
Cheers, DVD ordered.
Pssst!! you can watch the entire gig on youtube but if anyone asks i didn't tell you
21. i'm amazed this hasn't gone at half the price of a new one!! they're awesome basses for the money if i had the spare cash i'd have it in a heartbeat have a free bump on me
22. did a musical last week which contained a bar of 15/8 which was ...... fun
23. i make a few bits and bobs from tracks i've played on that've been synced for web ads etc nothing major but you are entitled to it. Unfortunately unlike PRS you don't make money every time your track is played, only when the original recording is played which is one of the ways PPL and PRS differ when they pay out.
24. In a word, yes! if the EP is released your entitled to money from your performance on a recording. The people to speak to about this are PPL http://www.ppluk.com/ unfortunately if they decide to re record without you like ozzy osbourne did http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diary_of_a_Madman_(album) then they don't owe you anything as its not your performance anymore also if you had any contribution towards writing material then you are owed PRS http://www.prsformusic.com/Pages/default.aspx royalties on anything that is released. This blog may be a useful read http://dearrichblog.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/figuring-out-songwriter-credits.html of course the musicians union will have all of this information and will be able to give you actual legal advice specific to your case but that should get you started hope this puts your mind at ease and everything works out cheers Chris
