Has anyone bought a bass on a whim just cos of its looks?
Marky L replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Yes. Very often. -
Just got Tobie's pedal board from him. It's like new and came with a whole ton of patch leads and spare power cables (the power block was included). It also came in it's original packaging which is the sort of think I like! Super smooth and easy communications. I can totally recommend Tobie. Cheers mate! Mark

And that's as it should be.

Our drummer seems to think he HAS to count every song in. Unfortunately he doesn't often get the tempo right. One song we do, he hammers out a 1,2,3,4 at the start, first verse fast, then chorus slows down and then that's the tempo from then on. He has no idea he does it. I have the delight of bringing up that at the next band camp! (And much more too!!)

Well, good on them. I do hope they did enjoy themselves. The old lad with the rock band certainly knew how to engage with the crowd though he was still a bit pub singer. I cringed at the transition in to No Woman No Cry in the reggae thang and Bette, I guess she did her best but she's no front woman. No energy and she walked around so gingerly it was like something was about to fall out. I think she did hit a couple of notes right and as for the rendidtion of Don't Let Your Son Go Down On Me.. ouch! How she sang it is now well and truly stuck in my head!!

Being in a band with someone from a well known...

Me too! What do we have so far? Rebellion - must have a punk edge to them. Big in the 80's and 90's. Likely a London band. Hmmm... -
Oh I also forgot to say that if you get in to any sort of conversation with them, at somepoint they will say "it's a distraction". I have been told that apparently all that is going on in Ukraine is a distraction. Daring to ask from what, will then lead to a 10 or 15 minute tranmission at you, not pausing for breath, nor for sense either. I believe that a lot of these conspiracies lead back to an anti-science stance and have a religious doctrine behind them. Lots of Ytube alternative presenters have a strong "God" flavour to their crackpot nonsense. Maybe it's possible that the religious leaders, seeing their flocks and incomes dwindling significantly, have infiltrated to world of "alternate truth" and are manipulating it do turn people away from science and back to religion. Hmm.. is that my own conspiacy theory I have going there?

He's great! Also check out Profesor Dave Explains, he holds no punches. In my day to day work I have to engage with any number of "alternate" theorists and it really is quite extraordinary the things they believe. History can't be trusted, no dinosaurs, Trump is great, New World Order, one world bank, lizards, global paedo rings, Q Anon, NASA is evil, Bill Gates is evil, and of course the Flatulents as I call the flat earthers. It gets rather tiring after a while.

It's such a pity that this is the route TV entertainment has taken. Yes, I get the "We need something exciting to happen", but the formula used is rather toxic. Otherwise, I have enjoyed it so far, though I'm not sure why Lady Leshur couldn't work out how to put her jacket on properly.

Yup, I can mash out a few barre chords too. Perfect for getting the basic jist of a song (or all of the Ramones back catalogue).

Hmm.. now I recall reading somewhere (and I need to try and find it again) that a certain Mr Watt-Roy laid down a few of the more tasty recorded bass lines for The Clash on maybe their first and second albums.

Yeah I found it very odd. I definitely had UK domestic and both addresses entered are UK. It was annoying me quite a bit as I just couldn't take the booking through to the next step. Anyhoo, I contacted the live chat folks, first person couldn't help, so I tried again later and the fellow on the other end immediately suggested putting the brand name in front of the word amplifier and bingo all sorted!
-
Head is booked in and I'm excited at getting it back to running how it should (damaged valve drive pot and a couple of other little things). Just going through the online booking via TNT's site and if I enter amplifier as the contents it flags it as a prohibited item.. did you have this issue or put the contents as something else?? Just concerned that could nullify and insurance claim if it comes to that.
-
Can I ask how much TNT charged? I need to book my head in for some repairs (and no, I'm not talking about the empty thing on top of my shoulders!)

I love my Ashdown gear. My gigging set up has been the same for a number of years now and I have no real reason to change it. (I have some other Ashdown bits at home) Klystron 500 with Neo 2x10 and Neo 1x15. Sansamp to make it .. me. Nearly always a P bass, always roundwound, SD Qpounders and 95% of the time a pic.

Well here we are. A punk Ric with credentials. Anyone got a few quid spare?? https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-6338692?ldp_breadcrumb=back&intObjectID=6338692&from=salessummary&lid=1&fbclid=IwAR0PlMbF2RiwCnKAL_P1HuzVxiWNBRe-ppEoIU9X_fldriHvqGNo1_MfPgQ

And also always with Eddie & The Hot Rods except for in the very early days when he had a Jazz of some sorts. There is a clip of them on YTube with him using the Jazz. Sorry, bit of a fan boy here!
-
The first clip is Bryn Merrick (sadly no longer with us). The second clip (which is for me the very distillation of The Damned live chaos in those earlier days) is Algy Ward. My fave band ❤️

It's what seems to get labelled as "proto punk". I think it put the fire in the blood of the UK musicians that took it and created punk as we know it.

The downstroke only Ramones style is f'ing hard work especially when you get to some of the silly live speeds they ended up doing. Part of the secret (outside of endless practice) is to have your bass low so your right arm is pretty much fully extended and that way all the action is from your wrist and not your arm.
