The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!

I have the sunburst that's for sale on here. Neck pickup nothing to write home about, but the bridge pickup is brilliant, punchy and switchable between single and parallel. The neck is really good too, and the tuners are excellent. Super light, too. I moved the top strap button to the base of the neck, and moved the other one higher on the body, and it now hangs perfectly. Definitely worth a try... -

Just found this on eBay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165765029439?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=nzbr_P_0TwG&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=SYHO0yd2SXe&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY It's being sold by a member on here, and I've messaged him. Meanwhile, does anyone have any useful info they'd care to share? I really like the look of it...

I've only owned this for two months, bought from Ash of this parish. Oddly, I have to sell it for the same reason Ash did- left hand problems. Not the fault of the bass, just work-related RSI in my wrist. I didn't think it would be as much of a problem as it has turned out to be... A sad sale, as it sounds lovely. Gut strings on the D and G chock full of tone. It has a lovely warm overall tone. Selmer, mid 20th century (Ash's guesstimate). It's had a couple of pictured luthier repairs. I've added position markers up to the 1st octave. The attached tuner is very helpful, and the piezo pick-up works fine. It comes with a bow (no idea of the quality), rosin, a soft case, and all the spare strings pictured. Again, I've no clue as to how used they are- they look fine, but haven't tried them on the bass. I'll also throw in the pictured bar stool I bought for sitting practice. Personal pickup will be needed - I'm near Barrow, but willing to meet halfway, depending on where you are. Very happy to answer any questions I've forgotten to cover, and here are the pics:

Francis bought a set of strings from me: good communication and instant payment. What more could you ask for! Thanks Francis

5 string strings on a 4 string
Sambrook replied to Buckminster Emptier's topic in General Discussion
Thomastik rounds work very well as BEAD without adjustment to the nut, as they have a slim profile. They sound fabulous, too... -
It functions entirely as any 'normal' bass...

And another question while I'm at it: what's a good preamp for the upright? Been looking at the Headway edb-1. Are there any threads on this matter that I've missed? Cheers in advance...

I was just reading about Francois Rabbath, how he has built on the work of Simandl. Would his book/method be better to start with, or do you have to 'do' Simandl first?

Thanks boss, always good food for thought from you. Going to Gumtree now...

Just for reference, this is the stick I have at present:

And yet you've explained it very well! The bow as amplifier is a very instructive illustration, thanks Bloopdad. Because I'm an almost complete beginner (couple of months each on a cello and HB EUB), I put all the horrendous screeches down to me, not the bow. I'm thinking it will be a while before I can discern the shortcomings of my bow, so will put off upgrading till then. Is that a reasonable idea? And how would you all rate something like this?- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270778045194?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=A1ga7-VKTNK&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=SYHO0yd2SXe&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Very much appreciate the time you've all taken to reply in such detail; it makes this 'voyage of discovery ' less scary. Cheers

Thanks to all of you for your input: it has shaped my thinking. I saw Ash's Selmer for sale on here. He's only an hour from me, it's been well played in and set up, so it came home with me. Still pondering lessons (I'm a diehard cheapskate), but YT is proving very helpful indeed ('Discover Double Bass' in particular) Beginning to understand the need for a different mentality in the approach. I need educating in the matter of a bow. A bow is a bow is a bow, no? (a stick and some horsehair) What does a £1200 bow have over a £120 one, for example? The above is an ignorant comment, I know, so please enlighten me! Cheers, Sean
