  1. Saw Hejira last night in Kendal, playing Joni Mitchell's 'Jaco/jazz' period. Really excellent show, great playing by all. Bass player (Dave Jones?) on top form. Thoroughly recommended...
  2. I would second the above thoughts about not being scared of the 'bare' fingerboard. Your fingers already know the correct spacing, even if your eyes disagree...
  3. 1 mystery set of short scale flats: black silks at ball end, light blue at t'other. They play nicely, but I prefer lower tension. Maruszcyck flats, very smooth indeed, but fairly stiff, so not for me. Don't know the history of either set, I've played them on and off, but more off than on. Tons of life in both sets. Price includes postage. Cheers.
  4. Bought these from the marketplace here, as a trial. Decent tone, but too stiff for me (TI weakling). Cut 4 online. Don't know which version they are, or the gauge, sorry. Price includes postage. Cheers.
  5. These came with my Epiphone Jack Casady fretless, so I don't know which 'group' they are, or the gauge. I was pleasantly surprised by them, as I'm a Thomastik flats snob; these sound good, and reasonably supple. 34" scale, cut for 2 a side, played for only a couple of days. Price includes postage. Cheers.
  6. Excellent strings, but sold the bass they were destined for. Played for maybe a couple of days? Descriptions in the photo. Medium scale, but fitted short scale very happily. Price includes postage. Cheers.
  7. These came with a new bass, played them for a couple of days, but the bass needs flats, so these are for sale. Cut for 2 a side. Info in the photo. Price includes postage. Cheers.
  8. I've got one, and it's tremendous! It's no delicate flower, not moodily melodic or owt like that. It's a bruiser, with an absolutely huge tone, particularly when slightly overdriven.
  9. But you shall not the receive the answer to your question... "fretless, goose neck mic, sound hole..."
  10. The time has come to sell this wonderful instrument. I love almost everything about it, but the posture required, sitting and standing, is causing me pain, and I've not been able to get around that. As per the title, it's a BSX Allegro 4 string in tobacco burst. If you're interested, you'll likely know all about them (their website is old fashioned but informative). It has an acoustic chamber, with f-holes, and the unplugged volume is just right for quiet practice. The preamp is very good indeed. Bartolini, 3 band, developed specifically for this instrument. Easy to produce a very natural sounding warm tone. The bridge is fixed, but the neck is adjustable! Really simple and quick to alter the action (one screw to hand turn) Condition is good. It has some scuffs to the headstock, the top bout (where the neck meets the body) has a 'milky' sheen to it. Sunlight fading? Not sure, but it's cosmetic only. The picture shows a line that looks like a crack, but absolutely isn't. It's just where two timbers meet). Some very minor marks here and there, but all round good nick. The rubber endstop is worn through, it's the metal endstop that contacts the floor. Strings: the A,D, and G strings are Spirocore Weichs, can't remember what the E is, but it's nearly as good as the Spirocores, which are just wonderful, hugely expressive. I've put dots on the side of the neck, as you can see (but nobody else) There is a BSX bag that comes with it. Good for carrying, but doesn't offer too much protection. Also a cheap French bow. I won't post this, but happy to host potential buyers, also happy to travel halfway to meet, depending on where... Thanks for reading. Happy to fill in any missing info on request... Pics:
  11. I'm not a compressor expert by any stretch of the imagination, but the above vid convinced me to get one, and I really like it...
  12. I have a passive bass, one single coil pickup, volume and tone. It has the single coil hum, certainly, but an annoying buzz as well. Thinking it's an earthing problem, I've checked the groundings, but here's the rub - between 8 and 10 (max) it's as quiet as I can get it; turn it below 8, and the buzz increases very noticeably. Could it be a dodgy volume pot? Any input gratefully received, as always...
  13. I've just ordered a set of Newtone shorties- what's the tension like? I had TI rounds ready for my new to me Epiphone Newport, but they really didn't suit, tension was actually TOO low...
  14. Anybody heard of these basses, or had any experience of them? http://www.guttlin.be/basmodels.htm I love the look and sound of them... Pricing seems good too... ......tempted......
  15. And another ringing endorsement... https://youtu.be/IbgGZUsPJYk?si=nHaqSuADjaxq3EH-
  16. Apologies if this is well trodden ground - I am new enough to double bass to think like the title of this topic. The price range of bows is astonishing, so what are the things that make a 'good' bow? ...I await your instruction...
  17. These have come off my BSX eub. I don't know the age or the gauge, but they have plenty of life. Selling because I want the lowest tension I can find. E 126.5cm from the far end of the ball to the start of the silk. 15cm of silk A 126cm. 26cm of silk D 126.5cm. 27cm of silk G 127cm. 20cm of silk.
  18. Adjusted ad: I've put the original neck back on. Here's how it looks now...
