1. I just got this new Sei today. I promised Lawrence and Steve some photos, so here they are. They really don't do the bass justice though, I'll take some more in the daylight.
2. I vaguely remember another shop on Hurst street called Muso's, that was pretty cool, I wasn't too old so only went there a couple of times.
3.
Man, I've been playing for 12 years and I still haven't learned the fretboard. What can I say, I'm dedicated
How do you play when you don't know what notes you're playing.
4. You obviously know your alphabet, assuming that you know what you're strings are, E, A, D, G on a four string bass. Just carry on the alphabet inserting the sharps and flats as necessary, if you don't know where they are then learn the chromatic scale. Practice playing riffs and lines etc, and every time you play a note mentally name it, you'll soon learn your fretboard. Don't forget that the notes repeat.
5. I bought and gigged with an Epifani 3x10 last year, and currently use a Berg IP rig. The Epifani gear is great if you like the inherent sound, the Berg gear lets you dial in your sound, it's much more of a blank canvas. Funnily enough I'm using an Epifani preamp which really suits the Bergantino stuff. Have a word with Mark from Bass direct, he has a great demo studio, much better than trying stuff in a normal shop environment, you can take your own bass and amp.
6. Same with me, I just love playing and would hate not to be able to do so.
7. Same as mine, the instrument has a great warm sound, not at all cold or sterile as some people expect.
8. The bodies are made from Alder, the same as US Fender basses. http://www.modulusguitars.com/v2/products/quantum/index.html
9. I got some from one of those machines, I can't remember how much they were, but they weren't very much. They're great, how many times have you met someone, gone to give them you're phone number/email address only to find that you don't have a pen.
10. The D'Addarios are EXL220's and are unused, they're for a long scale bass, my bass needs an extra long scale set, the gauges are 120, 095, 075, 060, 040 - £10 including postage. Elixirs - I have 10 of these strings, I was experimenting with the gauges, these have been fitted but not played, I didn't like them, they were on my Modulus so they should fit most basses, if you PM me I'll let you have the length of string. The gauges are as follows - 130, 125, 125, 100, 095, 080, 075, 065, 040, 032 - £25 including postage for the lot. Status hotwire half wounds - Again these have been fitted but only for about 10 minutes, the gauges are 125, 100, 080, 060, 040, 030 - £10 including postage.
11. Something else to remember about a Modulus over a Status is the choice of pickups and electronics that you get when ordering. I have bart pickups on my fretted (soon to be changed to Q-tuners), and an East preamp, my fretless is having Barts and a Bart pre, With Status you get Status pickups and a Status pre, I don't know if the Status pickups are readily interchangeable with other makes, but it's something to think about. I'm not knocking Status here, I'm actually thinking about ordering a 6 string Kingbass later in the year.
12. I'm going to have to agree totally with everything that SMART has said, my Modulus bass is fantastic, the neck never moves, I play it for at least 4 hours every day, and the action is the same every time I pick it up. I have previously owned Alembics, Wals, Jaydees, Seis, Roscoes, and my Modulus is THE best, the build quality is second to none. I have the satin finish on my neck. I thought most bodies were Alder, Ash is a recent option that they're added, and one that I've chosen for my new fretless, at least that's what I was told by Modulus when I enquired, and I'm talking about the Quantum model. http://www.modulusguitars.com/v2/products/quantum/index.html My bass is set up super low, I hadn't noticed it being clattery, it has a great warm sound to it, not at all like you'd expect.
13.
Personally, having basses with; A Maple Neck and Phenolic 'board, The Vigier with its 10/90 neck and Phenolic 'board, Numerous Wooden items (!), And having played Statii, Modulii (sic), Ped and the Doc's S2 Vigiers, Cutlasses etc. with their all-graphite necks, what I'd like is.... A Graphite necked instrument with a wooden fretboard. Especially a fretless with an ebony fingerboard or a fretted with Wenge... Stability & neutrality from the neck. Warmth from the fretboard... Anybody? or am I totally mental?!
Modulus with a Chechen fretboard ?.
14. Sorry I've been a bit busy, I'm playing in three bands at the moment, and doing a lot of teaching so things are a bit hectic. I hope I've replied to all the PM's, all items are now sold, and everything bought has been posted 1st class, and should arrive safely in the next day or so.
15. They're being sold by Fairdeal muic for £619. http://www.fairdealmusic.com/guitars/bass_...gwb105-5-string I think that Ibanez have renamed the GWB35 and it's now the GWB105, it's available in a natural wood finish which is like the one that Gary plays, and I think looks better.
16.
Do you know the gauge of the La Bella deep talkin flats?
They're this set 760FLXL - 43, 60, 82, 104 extra long scale.
17. I have about a dozen sets of strings, and various other stuff all over the place, in cupboards bags etc, so here are a few sets of strings that I've bought and don't particularly like, and a couple of straps, I've started using comfort straps. The strings have been fitted to my Modulus which is a 35" scale beast, so they'll fit pretty much any other bass, but PM me and I'll let you know the length of the string. They have only been used for a very short length of time, I'm talking 30 minutes or so, so there's plenty of life left in them. TI Flats - 6 string set......too floppy - £15 including postage. La Bella deep talkin flats - 4 string set.....too tight - £10 including postage. Status flats - 6 string set - didn't like the sound - £10 including postage. Two Fender leather straps - as new condition - £15 each including postage.
18.
Read very similar things on that American bass forum! What's the deal with Behringer, isn't it that the equipment is designed in Germany and made in China?
Photocopied in Germany from what I've always understood.
19. No way I'd buy Chinese, the quality isn't as good, plus their human rights record stinks. I personally don't think that they should have been given the games in the first place.
20. Sure enough, Jaco mainly only played a 4 string, but then again he died 21 years ago, 6 string basses were pretty much unheard of then, 5's were only just starting to make an appearance. And anyway, the 4 string fretless was HIS instrument of choice, what has that to do with this rather pointless discussion, that has been dragged up for the trillionth time.
21. I'm very tempted to have this back.
22. Nice looking bass Steve, I'm sure you'll get the neck sorted out. Where did you get it from ?.
23.
Yeah, sorry. I didnt think. DO NOT THINK AS A MUSICIAN, ONLY A BASSIST!
I like you......very well said. You've picked a bit of a dodgy site to ask for advice on something, that hasn't only got 4 strings, and doesn't have a Fender logo on the headstock. And you haven't exactly received a very pleasant welcome have you, you go to the trouble of registering on a bass site and you get some of the replies like you've had. There are a few more enlightened and friendly people on here though. Quote - I would start on a 4 string at first before going to a 6, 6xers have a huge neck. 6 string basses don't all have have huge necks, My modulus has 17mm string spacing and a lovely slim neck. As for strings try these people here, they're already been recommended to you once, and I'll 2nd that recommendation, they make great strings, buy the 7 string set and just use the ones that you want. http://www.overwater.co.uk/bass_guitar_strings.htm Also try Status, they do custom sets. http://www.status-graphite.com/status/cart...ames/frame1.htm You can tune a bass however you want, you're obviously used to the EADGBE tuning so stick with it, it's going to be your bass. Try this site for more open minded information. http://forum.extendedrangebassist.com/
24.
Hmm - me thinks it will be busy :-) I am there with car full of goodies Mark (Poptart)
Oh no, everyone leave your wallets at home, or they'll be a good deal lighter when you return home (lol).
25.
another point in favor of a 34" scale is string choice - it gets rather limited in medium scale. I suppose a clever designer could work around that by altering overall string length, but this has been a bit of a problem for me.
I agree totally about string choice, I have a problem getting strings for my Modulus, most strings fit OK, but some, D'addario and La bella for example I have to buy in extra long scale, there are strings that I'd like to try that won't fit. I don't have a problem playing my Modulus which is 35" and my Sei which is only 34", there's not that much difference, if you compare the necks side by side, the frets are pretty much in the same place until you get down around and past the 12th.
