1. Thanks for all of your comments. I'd like to see the photos you have Mike, I've got a couple from before the finish was applied. I've spent loads of time in Holland over the last 5 months, so I wasn't around enough to get down to see the various stages of construction. She's so comfortable to play, I guess I was playing for about 8 hours yesterday with no discomfort at all. The balance couldn't be bettered, it's perfect. Two things I was concerned about before I collected it, are the 18mm string spacing and 34" scale length, the Modulus is a 35" and has 17mm string spacing, I'd ordered the Sei before I started playing the Modulus, and the Modulus has been my main companion for the last 8 months or more. I needn't have worried though because I honestly don't notice it. I can go from one bass to the other without thinking. She was going to have Q-tuner pickups fitted, but they didn't arrive in time, so they're going onto the Modulus, the Bartolinis sound perfect though, just as Martin Predicted they would. I play in quite a varied assortment of musical projects, from an ambient rock band, a jazz quartet, a duo with another jazz guitarist who uses looping, to a junction band playing most things from jazz to present day pop, I wouldn't hesitate to use the Sei in any of them, I think though that the Modulus has the edge in the rock band, mainly due to the visual aspect of the design, she has a vast palate of tonal colours. I keep saying 'she', which is something I picked up from Alex, but it seems right somehow, can you have male and female musical instruments ?. Here are a few more photos, they still don't do justice to Martins work, the flame maple neck is almost 3D, if it does stop raining some time in the near future I'll take some better photos outside.
2. There's even a drummer live bit. Why nothing for bass players, perhaps BGM could organize something for next year. I went two years ago and thought it a total waste of time, except for Laurence Cottle and Jeff Berlin, but if EBS/GB aren't there this year, then it really would be an even bigger waste of time.
3. I'd like to see yours, I bet the flamed ash looks nice, is there a photo of it on the Sei website ?.
4.
Hello all, Thanks ever so much for the suggestions, got lots of googling to get on with this morning to check out whats been suggested. Dood, thanks for sorting out the other post, had a bit of a no brainer posting in the wrong place. I have read something about the QSC amps before and they look pretty tasty, and the digital Crown sounds cool too. BIG surprise was the powered Bergantino cabs.....never knew they existed BRILLIANT!!! Thanks very much so far guys, lots to think about.
The Berg cabs sound brilliant, and work really well with the Epifani pre. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...s_speakers.html Speak to Mark at bass direct.
5. I use mine with my Bergantino IP112 powered speaker cab. But if it's just a poweramp that you're after, try the Crown audio XTi amps, they're digital so they have no noisy fans to drive you mad, theyr'e plenty powerful and a great price. 6.
Thanks Kevin - absolutely stunning! Knowing Martin's work, I'd imagine it plays and sounds as good as it looks. I didn't make it to the Gallery last week so missed out on an intimate introduction - I'm looking forward to more photographs when you get a chance. What's the facing timber on this (and is it the same facing on the reverse)? Cheers, Lawrence
Hi Lawrence It's buckeye burl front and back over a walnut core, it's quite heavy but has an amazing acoustic sound, probably the loudest I've come across. Bartolini P4 pickups and an East preamp, blue side LED's.
7.
Hi Kev can you somehoe make your pics bigger? Steve. Too many strings? how so?
I was just getting in first, I know someone will make that comment. No, to me it's perfect. I'll take some better photos outside over the weekend.
8.
I wouldn't swap this for a Markbass cab in a million years...
Me neither.
9.
It's been removed now anyway, my guess is someone reported it and ebay didn't like the "i have to right to blah blah blah i'm a twat" bit. To be fair neither do i. They blatantly haven't read ebay's rules, they really don't have right to end early at all.
It's still their item surely, if they decide to sell to it outside of ebay then that's their choice. I've sold loads of items outside of ebay, they've been advertised here as well and sold through here, at the end of the day any advertised item is still mine until the buyer pays for it.
10. I just got this new Sei today. I promised Lawrence and Steve some photos, so here they are. They really don't do the bass justice though, I'll take some more in the daylight.
11. I vaguely remember another shop on Hurst street called Muso's, that was pretty cool, I wasn't too old so only went there a couple of times.
12.
Man, I've been playing for 12 years and I still haven't learned the fretboard. What can I say, I'm dedicated
How do you play when you don't know what notes you're playing.
13. You obviously know your alphabet, assuming that you know what you're strings are, E, A, D, G on a four string bass. Just carry on the alphabet inserting the sharps and flats as necessary, if you don't know where they are then learn the chromatic scale. Practice playing riffs and lines etc, and every time you play a note mentally name it, you'll soon learn your fretboard. Don't forget that the notes repeat.
14. I bought and gigged with an Epifani 3x10 last year, and currently use a Berg IP rig. The Epifani gear is great if you like the inherent sound, the Berg gear lets you dial in your sound, it's much more of a blank canvas. Funnily enough I'm using an Epifani preamp which really suits the Bergantino stuff. Have a word with Mark from Bass direct, he has a great demo studio, much better than trying stuff in a normal shop environment, you can take your own bass and amp.
15. Same with me, I just love playing and would hate not to be able to do so.
16. Same as mine, the instrument has a great warm sound, not at all cold or sterile as some people expect.
17. The bodies are made from Alder, the same as US Fender basses. http://www.modulusguitars.com/v2/products/quantum/index.html
18. I got some from one of those machines, I can't remember how much they were, but they weren't very much. They're great, how many times have you met someone, gone to give them you're phone number/email address only to find that you don't have a pen.
19. The D'Addarios are EXL220's and are unused, they're for a long scale bass, my bass needs an extra long scale set, the gauges are 120, 095, 075, 060, 040 - £10 including postage. Elixirs - I have 10 of these strings, I was experimenting with the gauges, these have been fitted but not played, I didn't like them, they were on my Modulus so they should fit most basses, if you PM me I'll let you have the length of string. The gauges are as follows - 130, 125, 125, 100, 095, 080, 075, 065, 040, 032 - £25 including postage for the lot. Status hotwire half wounds - Again these have been fitted but only for about 10 minutes, the gauges are 125, 100, 080, 060, 040, 030 - £10 including postage.
20. Something else to remember about a Modulus over a Status is the choice of pickups and electronics that you get when ordering. I have bart pickups on my fretted (soon to be changed to Q-tuners), and an East preamp, my fretless is having Barts and a Bart pre, With Status you get Status pickups and a Status pre, I don't know if the Status pickups are readily interchangeable with other makes, but it's something to think about. I'm not knocking Status here, I'm actually thinking about ordering a 6 string Kingbass later in the year.
21. I'm going to have to agree totally with everything that SMART has said, my Modulus bass is fantastic, the neck never moves, I play it for at least 4 hours every day, and the action is the same every time I pick it up. I have previously owned Alembics, Wals, Jaydees, Seis, Roscoes, and my Modulus is THE best, the build quality is second to none. I have the satin finish on my neck. I thought most bodies were Alder, Ash is a recent option that they're added, and one that I've chosen for my new fretless, at least that's what I was told by Modulus when I enquired, and I'm talking about the Quantum model. http://www.modulusguitars.com/v2/products/quantum/index.html My bass is set up super low, I hadn't noticed it being clattery, it has a great warm sound to it, not at all like you'd expect.
22.
Personally, having basses with; A Maple Neck and Phenolic 'board, The Vigier with its 10/90 neck and Phenolic 'board, Numerous Wooden items (!), And having played Statii, Modulii (sic), Ped and the Doc's S2 Vigiers, Cutlasses etc. with their all-graphite necks, what I'd like is.... A Graphite necked instrument with a wooden fretboard. Especially a fretless with an ebony fingerboard or a fretted with Wenge... Stability & neutrality from the neck. Warmth from the fretboard... Anybody? or am I totally mental?!
Modulus with a Chechen fretboard ?.
23. Sorry I've been a bit busy, I'm playing in three bands at the moment, and doing a lot of teaching so things are a bit hectic. I hope I've replied to all the PM's, all items are now sold, and everything bought has been posted 1st class, and should arrive safely in the next day or so.
24. They're being sold by Fairdeal muic for £619. http://www.fairdealmusic.com/guitars/bass_...gwb105-5-string I think that Ibanez have renamed the GWB35 and it's now the GWB105, it's available in a natural wood finish which is like the one that Gary plays, and I think looks better.
25.
Do you know the gauge of the La Bella deep talkin flats?
They're this set 760FLXL - 43, 60, 82, 104 extra long scale.
