Can you 'slap' a Stagg EDB rockabilly-style?
6stringbassist replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Can you slap a stag, sure but watch out for the antlers......sorry !. -
This is only really a feeler, I'm still very much undecided. I love this bass, despite the recent arrival of a new Sei flamboyant, this bass gets used 2 or 3 nights a week. There's something else that's caught my eye though, and I would prefer over the Modulus. This bass is in mint condition, no marks, dents, scratches or swirls. I've owned it for almost a year, and have used it for numerous gigs and recordings, it was imported direct from the US last year. The neck is amazing, the action incredibly low, and it stays that way, unaffected by the climate. I'm asking £1250 for it, which is a bargain. It comes with a Modulus hardcase. Again this is only really a feeler to gauge interest, I'll probably come to my senses tomorrow. Kevin

Both my basses have active bypass, so I get both. I prefer the active sound though, I think it depends on the pre, some pre's probably don't suit certain basses, the East pre's I have in my two sound very natural, not at all artificial.

Nothing worse than noisy fans, try a class D power amp, they don't have them, they're also a lot lighter.

Steve Lawson uses these without a strap, I think that demonstrates what good balance they have.

My 6 string Quantum has absolutely no neck dive whatsoever, it is perfectly balanced, and very comfortable to play, and I play it for up to 6 hours per day. You're welcome to try it, where about are you based ?.

I spent a weekend studying with Todd Johnson earlier in the year, floating thumb means that your thumb actually floats, it's not anchored, it's used as a mute. It's actually quite hard to accomplish, but very useful. As with most techniques, it may suit some but not others, and is only really useful with a 5 or a 6 string. I personally don't use it very often, I prefer to rest my thumb on something, I move up and down the strings as I play.
Ive tried a fair few Rotos in my time and I dont like any of them, I have Elixers on my fretted and I LOVE them to bits, I wouldnt have anything but elixers now on a fretted bass.. BUT I need some strings for a fretless, Although I love elixers im pretty sure they dont do flats, and im pretty sure the rounds would cut into my new fretboard pretty fast, I really dont like the sound Rotos gave my Fretless J, Pretty much tried all the roto flats, think the last set were the "swing" or "jazz" I found it was very dull and really not what I wanted out of it, althou these new strings are going on my Fretless P. Could someone recomend some strings that are going to be really bright, but also not wreck my fingers or fretboard.
Roundwounds will give more Mwahh sound than flats, flats will make your fretless sound like an upright. Your fretboard should be fine, just adjust your vibrato technique, roll your finger up and down the string slightly, rather than bending the string.
That looks great I take it you had to go down to where they're based for them to get the shape of the foam cutout right?
They're based in Tamworth which is only about 8 miles up the road, so I could just drop it into them, but they can do it from a paper template that you can send in yourself, just draw around a sheet of wallpaper or something. -
Instrument Cases - Your Options

I just collected this today, I have to say I'm really pleased with it. It came form here, anyone interested in having a case built should give them a try, they are really good. http://www.castlecases.co.uk/ I only ordered it Tuesday. -
I've been using this with my Bergantino IP112, it's a fantastic sounding tube pre/DI. It's basically brand new. I just prefer the solid state pre's that I've got, and I've just ordered yet another, so this really is just sitting around doing nothing, which is a total waste. £225 ono including shipping. This is from the Summit website. The TD-100 instrument preamp and tube direct box from Summit Audio features a hybrid signal path utilizing both a discrete solid state output device and a 12AX7A/ECC83 vacuum tube to give your musical instruments the clarity of class A sound with the richness and warmth of vacuum tubes all in ½ rack space. Perfect for both live and studio use, the TD-100 offers both XLR microphone level and ¼" TRS line level outputs, plus variable input impedance, polarity switch and ground lift, signal and overdrive LEDs, and even a headphone output for use as a practice device. All with the quality that says Summit Audio. Additional Information: Basic Operating Instructions Product FAQ How can this little box improve your sound so drastically? First is the variable input impedance control (loading). By lowering the impedance on the TD-100 your instrument's pickups get loaded down, changing their tone and the way they react to the string vibrations, generally making the tone darker and quieter. Raising the impedance lets your pickups work without hindrance, opening up the sound with a slight increase in gain. Use this to make your instrument sit properly in a mix without EQ or other tone shapers. This effect works best with passive pickups. The second way the TD-100 improves your sound is with the transformerless vacuum tube based circuitry. This vacuum tube isn't made to distort and pervert, it adds a subtle texture and smoothness, a professional sheen to your instrument. Try the TD-100 in your signal chain, live or in the studio, with guitar, bass, keyboards, or any Hi-Z instrument and see what a little Summit Audio can do for you.

My favourite bass sound is Anthony Jackson on the Michel Petrucciani trio live in Tokyo album. Personally I don't use any EQ, it's set flat on my pre.

If you like I could pass your details on to whoever placed the ad, save you joining. -
Each one is going to sound a bit different, that's true of most basses. They aren't at all cold or sterile sounding, in fact they're very warm sounding instruments, what particular model are you after ?. For me I like the fact that you can stick it in its bag/case, travel 150 miles by train somewhere, open the case and the action on the thing is exactly as you left it. I got mine from the US last year, it took 3 days to arrive and was perfect when it came out of its case, and still in tune.
If I thought I could sell my Bergies, I'd be on my way through the tunnel now Steve.
What Bergies ?. Can I just add that I've had a couple of encounters with Steve, and he is a really nice guy to deal with. Both of these Accugrooves were originally mine, they really are fantastic cabs.
